interview with MISANTROPIC

Who started the band? All of us. Gerda came in later, we had another singer on the first EP but he moved away and got replaced by Gerda.

Where are you from? The band is located in Umeå, but we are from all over the north. Exept Gerda, who is a southerner (but still ok).

How did you meet? We had all played together in different bands before, or knew each otherfrom the scene  in some other way.

What is your name?/Who plays what?/How old are you? Matte (me): bass/vocals, Gerda: vocals,  Robert: drums, Eken: guitar, Rille: guitar. We are old bastards, between 30-36 or something like that.

What was the plan when you started the band? Playing d-beat,  agitating against the system and having a good time.

Explain to those who have not heard you, how does your music sound? Metal influenced d-beat hardcore punk.

Who writes the songs?/Who does the music? I write most lyrics and then we put the riffs together as a collective. Mostly. It depends. We rarely rehearse hahaha.

Good and bad sides of the band?

Good side: travelling, partying, playing music, meeting new friends.

Bad sides: lack of money, stress, driving ten hours in a car to play 20 minutes live

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Hating the upper class. Hating the rich. Hating fascism. Hating sexism. Hating war. So mostly hate. It’s a fucked up world with shitloads of assholes in it.

Have you released any album or single? What are they called so, and what years they were released?
We have released a split EP with DEATHRACE in 2009 and a full length album called “Insomnia” in 2011. In about three months time we hope to have the new release out – a split LP with EATEN RAW.

Do you sell  merchendise gadgets?/What does it cost? Homemade shirts and patches. Usually about 80-100 kr for a shirt and 10-20 for a patch.

How old were you when you started with music? I can only speak for myself here, so I was about 13 years old when I started my first band. This was in 1993 I guess.

How has your music evolved since you began playing music together? the early unrecorded material was much slower, more influenced by Bolt Thrower or Axegrinder and stuff like that. Over the years we´ve gotten faster and probably a bit more open minded.

What are your dreams with the band? We have no other ambitions besides playing our songs, drinking beer, meeting new friends and maybe help spreading our message.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Time. We have 7 kids and no free time, so we can never rehearse and rarely play live.

Describe your show, visual and musically We just go on stage and do our thing. If the crowd likes it, it usually turns into a big moshpit party.

What's places you can play in "Umeå"? We mostly play at Verket (diy/punk house). It is awesome.

What are your two big favorite songs you done? I like the new stuff. “Ripping through the darkness” is my favourite I guess. I also like the old classic “Raise the gallows” since it’s a fucking sing-along- class war hit.

Have you had any previous bands? Shitloads over the years. Lets see if I can remember: We have been/are playing playing in these bands - MATTE:  Rotel 11, Disbrutal, Social Sterility, Violent Death Collapse, Personkrets 3:1 and g.e.r.m, RILLE: Disconvenience, g.e.r.m, Epidemics, ZOID: Satariel, Bewitched, Hellmasker, Necromicon, Morthirim, EKEN: Lesra, GERDA: Bingo Ume, g.e.r.m

What do you do besides the band and the music? Work. Most of us also play in other bands. Eken has a recording studio (Ljudkross) that takes a lot of his spare time.

Besides your music style you play, what music stile do you enjoy listening to? Again, I can only speak for myself here. But I listen to, and play, lots of folk music when I don’t play hardcore punk. Irish, Brittish and American folk music mostly and I play weird shit like banjo, flutes, mandolines and accordions. (i´m the hippie in the band). The others mostly just listen to punk and metal.

Where have you played from 2012 to 2014? Mostly the north. We just came home from a mini tour in northern finland. But sometimes we go south.

Do you always do the same songs live or do you vary it? We mostly have time to play pretty much every song we have ever made.

What is your pre-show ritual? Drinking beers and eating food.

Have you toured somewhat over the years 2012 to 2014? No, just this finnish tour we just came home from. We usually don’t have time to tour, so mostly we just do 1-2 shows when we play live and then we go back home.

Where do you sleep when you're going on tour? Floors, skateboard ramps or sofas.

How many people usually come to your gig? I don’t know really. Usually between 50-150 or something like that. It all depends on the venue.

Tell us about your upcoming shows and why we should be there? Next gig is Punkfest 11 (Umeå) and Punk Illegal (Göteborg). You should come to support the scene.

What do you think of that they go to download music from the internet instead of buying records? I don’t download records. I am a music fan, so I want to support the bands I like and I want to have  an actual record to hold in my hand where I can read the lyrics, look at the artwork and stuff like that. Digital music sucks. Support the scene.

What is your outlook on the record industry today? I don’t give a shit about the record industry. I hate capitalism. But small labels (diy punk labels) are off course also affected by the downloading trend and they will probably die out soon. That’s kind of sad.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence? metallic d-beat hardcore punk

What are your web pages? www.misantropic.se. We also have a facebook.

Is it easier to draw inspiration from older bands than the bands that are active today? Maybe. Probably because the bands was better before. More primitive, more genuine.

What advice would you give to other bands? DIY or die.

Do you have anything to add? Thank you for the interview.
