interview with Fall of Mirra

What´s the name of your band?  Fall of Mirra

How was the band formed? The band was formed back in 2006 when our first vocalist, Fid, approached our guitarist Hadi to form an acoustic band together and the rest is history. Haha. And we ended up like this.

Can you tell about your band? We like to eat.
Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We’re all from Singapore. Tim does the vocals, Hadi plays the guitars, Fadzlly hammers the drums, Imran grooves on his bass and Julius plays the keyboard.
Could you explain your music to someone that hasn’t heard you? We play mixture of metal and hardcore, hope you like us.
Where was the latest gig? We played our country’s biggest festival called Baybeats. It was the most memorable experience for all of us because it was sort of a dream come true to play this festival. We will have a video out soon.
Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? Our guitarist, Hadi, writes the main riff for most of our songs, the rest of the bands just comes in with whatever feels natural or suggested.  It’s really a collective effort. I just write lyrics that I feel best suit the music being made.
Who has the best since of humor in the band? I would say all of us. We seldom take anything seriously and we’re always making fun of each other.
What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? I feel that we sound metalcore-ish. There’s no one sort of genre to describe us because we all have our own influences and different tastes in music, so definitely you will hear that in our songs.
Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? Yes, we have an album and EP actually. They’re titled ‘Circling The Wagons’ and ‘Prelude To Destruction EP’ respectively. You may listen to it at fallofmirra.bandcamp.com
Do you have any clips on YouTube? Yeah we definitely do! Just search ‘Fall Of Mirra’ and I’m very sure you will find a couple of our live videos and also some of our music videos.
What year was the band started? The band started out in late 2006.
Where have you played from then till now? We have played mainly around Asia. Countries like Indonesia, China, South Korea are a few memorable ones.

Which band is the best you´ve seen? I’m not sure about the rest of the band but Underoath has got to be one of the best bands that I’ve seen live. They’re the ones that got me into this sort of music in the first place and it was really sad to see them disband.

Is it always the same songs live? I wouldn’t say we always play the same songs live but we definitely do try to spice things up with a couple of new songs whenever we are ready to play them. If we don’t, we will just play around with songs we already written to make things exciting.

What has been the best/most promising gig so far? Again, Baybeats. Seeing so many people turn up for our set, cheering, singing, moshing to the songs we played was definitely something that I’ll never forget.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? We are in the process of writing our 2nd album and we have a couple of new stuff down. We cant wait to let you guys hear our new tunes and hope you guys cant wait too.

How do you get psyched up for a gig? We usually do some stretches before the show, huddle together, say a few words before we go on. Sometimes I would just watch the band before and just watch the crowd go crazy and thinking to myself ‘lets kill it. everything or nothing.’ If none of that happens, I’ll usually just disturb my drummer.

What are your goals with your music? Definitely with every other band out there we have hopes and aspiration that our music will bring us far because it’s what we love to do. But sadly, in where we live, its very difficult. So our current goals are just very simple, make as much music as we can and when we grow old we all can turn back and say, ‘we did all of that and we regret nothing’.
Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? We get our inspirations from all over the place, not only from bands. As for me, daily observations in our day to day lives sometimes leaves me inspired. But if we are solely talking about bands, you cant really compare. Older band definitely do have their own classics and its always fun reminiscing the old days but modern bands do have their fair share of creativity, experimenting with new sounds and all. Its always interesting.
What are your sources of inspiration? As mentioned, anything and everything from a day to day basis. I can see a leaf drop from a tree and suddenly feel inspired and perhaps write a song about us, the leaves, falling off the tree, dying, decomposing into the ground and giving life to a bigger tree for younger leaves to live on. Haha. Hope you get the weird analogy.
What's the first step when making a new song? Randomness. Our guitarist always plays around with his guitar and most often than not, he comes up with a really cool riff and we all just continue playing along with it.
How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? I have nothing against downloading music but of course if you could buy the album it’ll make people in bands really happy. Besides, buying albums might leave you with classics in the future. Haha.

What would be your dreams for the band? To just play everywhere to huge crowds and open for all my favourite bands before calling it quits. Haha. Those are my dreams for the band.
Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? Like I mentioned, we all listen to many different genres. Hadi’s into more metal, Julius is into more symphonic stuff, Fadzlly is more into trash hardcore punk, Imran listens to jazz and I listen to more hardcore or rock.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? I fear forgetting the lyrics and every other thing that can go wrong with the set but I usually just drown these bad things out and just let whatever I feel take over and give the best show I can.
What would you do if there was no music? Die. I cannot imagine the world with no music. It’ll just be a really sad sad place.
What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? I would say passion. We don’t really try to make a living off our music as we all have our own jobs as well. It’s about having that 30-45mins out of a hectic week to let loose, make people who come to watch your show have a good time. All these is worth it enough just to keep playing.
