interview with 3 Quarters Dead

What´s the name off bands? 3 Quarters Dead
What made you to be baptized to just "3 Quarters Dead"?  The best way we can describe the band name is "We as humans are made up of four basic part. Mind, body, heart, and soul. When you die the soul is the only part that lives on. Therfore leaving you only 3 Quarters Dead"
Who started the band? I gues no one individual really "started" 3QD. It just happened.  I (Mark Alexander) knew the original drummer and guitarist were jamming together, so i inquired if they needed another member, after i joined we found a bassist and our first vocalist and there was our band. The band name came shortly after.
Tell us a brief introduction of who you are? 3 Quarters Dead or in short 3QD is a Hard Rock'/Metal band  that has been on the regional rock scene since 1999.  We're not the average "Metal" band. We have such a clash of styles that we each embrace that eventually leads to a very unique musical performance. t's a blend of everything really.
Where are you from? Wlikesboro,North Carolina How did you meet?I met our drummer from hanging out at the local shopping mall when i was 16. The rest of us we're brought together from different friends who shared the same musical interests. We met our vocalist Jason Sain from our booking agent. He came and tried out for us and he's been here ever since.
What is your name?/Who plays what?/How old are you? Mark Alexander 35 -Rhythm guitar,  Matt Staley30 -Bass guitar,  Jason Sain 27-Vocals,  Allen Royal 36 -Drums, Sam Rhodes 32- Lead Guitar
What was the plan when you started the band? To become the next Heavy Metal powerhouse of course. World Domination.
Explain to those who have not heard you, how does your music? Our music is driven  mainly on emotion. If you can't feel what the music is giving you then to me,it's not doing it's job.
Who writes the songs?/Who does the music? We all contribute to the music writing process. Jason writes all the lyrics.
Who has the best humor? That's hard to say. We're all idiots and sometimes i wonder how anyone takes us seriously. ha.
Good and bad sides of the band? The good side to me is being able to accomplish a life long passion and being a part of something that is much bigger than yourself. The down side is that it takes LOTS of your time. Therefore relationships, commitments, etc. have to take the backburner and  that usually doesn't set well with most people. Me personally i choose not to put myself in those predicaments. I don't have time to deal with them.
What you drive for music style? Something unique and diverse.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Most have to do with the struggles we all face with ourselves and each other.
Do you own songs or covers? We have all our own material copywritten and our band name is trademarked. We have one cover of Stone Temple Pilot's "Dead and Bloated",but we never released it for sale. You can listen to it on our Reverbnation page www.reverbnation.com/3qd
Have you released any album or single? We have three full lenght albums. "Betweem Angels and Demons" 2008, Once Upon this Broken Glass" 2010 which featured our single "The Unknown" and  "The Cycle of Dust" 2012 which featured our single "Sometimes"  We are currently working on our 4th full lenght album.
What do you sell for merchendise gadgets? We have T-Shirts, girl baby-doll shirts, Beanies, stickers, posters. You can purchase them at our official website www.3quartersdeadmusic.com
What does it cost? most are around 15.00 each  stickers are 5.00, posters are 10.00
Have you done any music videos? Yes, two. One for "The Unknown 2010 and one for "Sometimes" 2012
How old were you when you started with music? We were all around the age of 12.
When did you decide to focus on the music? When we seen that we were good at what we had created and the reaction from other people.
How has your music evolved since you began playing music together? It started out with a more Metal sound then progressed to a more Hard Rock, more groove influence.
What are your dreams with the band? To be able to do what we love as a life long career.
What has been your biggest challenge as a band? I'd say getting attention from media sources. Booking agents, management co. etc.
What record do you work with? Our last album "The Cycle of Dust" was picked up by Turkey Vulure Records out of the mid-west.  Right now we are unsigned.
Describe your show, visual and musically. I feel coming to see 3QD should be an "experience". It can be high energy and aggressive, brought down to slow and emotional, and then smacked in the face again at the end. We have a preety cool setup for a mid level act. Lights, fog, risers. When it's all up it looks like we know what we're doing.
Have you had any previous bands? 3 Quarters Dead is my only band(Mark,Matt) Sam played in a band called End of All and another called At a Glance, Allen has played with The Autumn Offering,End of All,Enter the Void,Reality's Nightmare and more. Jason played in a band called October Morning before joining 3QD.
What do you do besides the band and the music? We all work regular jobs. Matt is an electrician, Jason works at a copper plant, Sam is a cook, Allen works at a computer plant and i work construction.
How important are your fans? They are everything really. They are the reason we can keep on doing what we do. Otherwise we'd be playing to the bartender or crickets.
What is the funniest thing a fan did for you? We had this awesome guy from Marion,NC make this mannequin head/exorcist demon thing that had our logo on it and it's head spins on this rotating plate. It's pretty damn cool.
What is the best band you live way? I'm a HUGE KISS fan, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Anthrax, Marilyn Manson. Sam listens to about everything. In Flames, Slayer, Motley Crue, a lot of progressive music. Jason listens to Devildriver,Slipknot,Korn, etc. Matt listens to In Flames, Mudvayne, Fear Factory ,Type O Negative etc. Allen listens Metallica, Megadeth, Stone Sour, TOOL., Meshuggah
How old were you at your first concert you saw? 14
How old were you at your first gig? 21
How old were you when you were on a stage for the first time? 8
Besides your music style you play what do you like the music still enjoy listening to? I enjoy old country, some classical music, very little pop. ha
What things are you most afraid of? WOMEN!!   Mayonaise!!  and Bigfoot.
What are you afraid will happen to you in the future? I'm really not scared of what is to come. I do not fear the unknown.
What drives a band that is not very well known and live on it to continue to play? I'd say the love of music. Do it because you love it guys. The better music you make the more people will be drawn to you.
When did you start off band? May 1999
Where have you played from 1999 to 2014? Up and down the USA East Coast and half way across America
Do you always the same songs live or vary it? It vaires. Depending on how long we have for a set.
What countries have you played in? USA only
What is your pre-show ritual? We usually gather together with alcohol and pep talk each other . A ritual is something we need to work on. I like the sounds of it.
What are your favorite and least favorite venues you up on the wood? Ziggy's Winston Salem,NC is a KILLER VENUE!!  Big stage, good sound, Backstage area.  The Wizard in Hickory can suck it. Unless it's changed from the last time we were there. ha
Have you had to set up a concert? A many of times.
Best/worst performed gig? The best show i think we ever played was the finalls we did for the Carolina Rebellion Contest at The Saloon in Charlotte,NC. Man, we were jacked to the damn moon!! I have it on video. It was like a damn warzone up there. I guess the worst really depends on circumstances that are beyond your control. We've played a few where epuipment failed or someone tripped and fell and messed the song up. ha. It kind of bums you out for the rest of the performance.
Have you toured somewhat over the years 1999 to 2014? Yes. We've done a few up and down the East Coast.
Where do you sleep when you're going on tour? In the van and in a hotel room about every two nights. Sometimes on top of each other. ha
How many people usually come to your gig? We average about 200 - 300 for a well promoted show.
Where do you plan to play the rest of the year? Any and everywhere we can. Would love to do a lot of Festivals. Those are always a blast.
Tell us about your upcoming shows and why we should be there? Our first big show of the year is at Ziggy's Winston-Salem  ON MARCH 8THwith HELZAPOOPIN Circus Sideshow Revue. It's going to be an insane show. Kind of different from the average Rock show. Firebreathers, Swordswallowers, bed of nails kind of stuff. We go on after the sideshow and there is also a Burlesque show after us.  www.ziggyrock.net for all info
We are also opening for SOIL and TANTRIC at the Blind Tiger in Greensboro,NC on April 5th.
What do you think of that they go to download music from the internet instead of buying records? I think it's about even. You see a lot of the younger fans do download only, but most of the older fans(like me) still want to have something tangible in their hands. I alwas loved looking at the artwork, lyrics etc. It felt more complete i guess.
What is your outlook on the record industry today? I say the more you can do yourself the better off you'll be. Get a good booking agency, management company and work and tour your ass off. You'll be better off.
What are your favorite substandard instruments? I love bagpipes. Banjo, Cello, Violin. What is the first step to a new song? I'd say start with a grooving verse and chorus and branch out from there.
What image do you think your music conveys? I hope it inspires people to overcome all the obstacles in their lives. To rise above any kind of oppression. To let them know that they are not alone.
What's the best and worst of playing clubs? The best is definetly playing to the crowd. The worst is load in and load out. Especially when it's raining. ha
What are your web pages? www.3quartersdeadmusic.com   www.facebook.com/3quartersdead  www.reverbnation.com/3qd  You tube- 3quartersdead1    bandcamp.com/3quartersdead
What are your role models before? Gene Simmons, Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield, Dave Lombardo, Lars Ulrich, Peter Iwers, Dez Fafara, Rob Zombie, Jonathan Davis,
What inspires you? I think we inspire each other. We can feed off each other rather easliy and we're all great friends in our daily lives. When we're not playing music we're usually hanging out, raising Hell somewhere.
Is it easier to draw inspiration from older bands than the bands that are active today? To me it is. There hasn't a band  that has caught my interest in the past 10 years. ha. Our singer might tell you different. He listens to a lot of the new bands.
Where is most common that you play? Winston Salem, Charlotte, Tampa,FL, Virginia area.
What are your plans for the future? Release the new album, play everywhere we can be booked at, possibly a video for the new single.
What are the main obstacles for the band?Just getting out there and getting noticed by the mass media.
