interview with Haggard Wulf

What's the name of your band? Haggard Wulf
How was the band formed?
The name of the band started out as a joke, as in a fictitious band named Haggard Wulf. A few years later, we decided to use the name for 1 show and it just stuck.
Can you tell about your band? We're a 2 piece band (if you will) from Morgantown, WV. Somewhat unique in the sense that we shy away from the "traditional" rock band lineup. A minimal drum kit, 1 guitar, 1 guitar amp with no effect pedals and just 2 random dudes using said instruments.
Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band?
We're both from Fairmont, WV. Mike Kulina - drums and vocals. Chris Shuttlesworth - Guitar and vocals
What was the ambitions of the band when you started?
We never set out to accomplish anything to be honest, other than to have fun... and we have!
Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? That's pretty hard to do, we are bad about describing ourselves. We combined a mixture of blues, rockabilly and punk. Some call it blues punk, that works.
Where was your first gig? Our first shows was a Nirvana tribute show, with us and many other local WV bands doing Nirvana covers. We actually covered songs that Nirvana covered on their Live MTV show.
Where was the latest gig?
Our newest show will be with Reagan Youth in November.
Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics?
We both play an equal part in writing lyrics. Chris writes pretty much all of the music since he's the one that plays guitar, that's more of his thing.
Who has the best since of humor in the band?
Definitely Mike, hands down.
Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We write all of our own material with no outside help. We'll throw a few covers into our live shows from time to time as well.
Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? Yes, we have a few CD's, EP's and a split 7" record as well. You can find them all on our bandcamp page - http://haggardwulf.bandcamp.com
Do you have any clips on YouTube? Yes, we have a good deal of videos and live performances on Youtube. Here's one to check out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7pi5b4nUcQ
What year was the band started? The name and idea of the band was thought of in 2005, however, we didn't make it official until 2010.
Best/worst gig you've played? Worst - The Triangle - Westover, WV. We have a live album from that night on our bandcamp page, check it out...
What places will you be playing in in the immediate future? We'll be playing locally through the winter months, basically within a 2 hour or so stretch of Morgantown, WV.
Where have you played from then till now?
We've played many states, as well as all over our home state of West Virginia. We did our "Beast Coast" tour in 2013 and had a blast doing that.
Which band is the best you've seen?
Chris: It's a 3-way tie between Reverend Horton Heat, Ministry and OFF!
Mike: GWAR or Danzig
Is it always the same songs live? No, we never play the same exact set list. We have enough material to play a solid 3 hours, give or take. That makes it easy to be able to pick and choose, mix it up from show to show.
What has been the best/most promising gig so far? That's a tough one, as we have had the opportunity to open for many well-known acts such as Dax Riggs (of Acid Bath), Deniz Tek (of Radio Birdman), Joe Buck Yourself, Wayne "The Train" Hancock and lots more.
Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? Our Beast Coast Tour in the Fall of 2013.
How big crowds do you usually play for? We've played to a handful of people up to about 300 or so. All of the shows that we've played vary quite a bit.
What are the plans for the rest of the year? Hopefully we'll have time to finish and release our new Mourningside EP and get started on our new split 7" record.
Where do you usually play? 123 Pleasant Street in Morgantown, WV is our stomping ground. We've played there more than any other venue for sure.
What are your goals with your music? I wouldn't say that we have goals, other than to just have fun with it. That's not to say we don't take things seriously either though.
Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? Both. Not only that, but within the WV music scene just as much as on a global level.
What are your sources of inspiration?
We draw in inspiration from all around us, be it good or bad.
What's the first step when making a new song? It's usually just a central idea that forms, then from there a line or 2, maybe a chorus. It can also be just a simple guitar riff that turns into a song. We've been known to make up songs on the fly while playing live. Bath Salt Blues for example.
How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? That's the norm, it is what it is. (Chris) I still enjoy handling a physical copy of album with all the artwork and what not though.
What would be your dreams for the band?
Honestly, we've came further along than both of us could ever imagine. We're just waiting for the rug to get pulled out from under us.
Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to?
Chris: The Who, The Stooges, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, etc.
Mike: The Cult, Iron Maiden, The Damned.
What would be your greatest fears for the future? Global threats.
When you are on stage, what do you fear most then?
Chris: I'm very comfortable while on stage playing. It's before and after sometimes when my anxiety gets me. Social anxieties and anxiety in general kinda sucks...
Mike: I ain't afraid of no ghost!
Have you been part of any other projects?
We've both sat in with other bands as a guitarist, drummer, vocalist and what not.
Have you been in any other bands?
Yes, we've both been in previous bands before Haggard Wulf such as Rockets To Russia, Year Supply Of Meat (YSM), Pickpocket, etc.
What do you work with outside of the band and the music?
Chris: I'm an auto technician and a graphic/web designer.
Mike: I work at a used video game store and do lots of artwork and side work.
What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? We've let people just jump up and be the drummer, that usually doesn't work out well. A girl licked Chris's guitar in the middle of a song once. There's all kinds of randomness that has went on.
How often do you rehearse? Not that often... We play enough live shows regularly, that's our "practice" so to speak.
Where do you rehearse? Live on stage or in our own living room.
Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment?
Chris: "Never Bet The Devil Your Head" and "Jaded Mercenaries..."
Mike: "Electric Placebo" and "I'm On The Other Side"
What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? If we were in it to just get rich and famous, we would've stopped before we started. That's nothing but a pipe dream.
Do you have any webpages?
Indeed we do.

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? If you're in it for the money, just stop.
Describe your show, visually and musically. Typical live show scenario... Mike's drum kit (especially the snare drum) will fall apart at least once. Chris's guitar will come unplugged from running around and jumping onto chairs, tables, etc. The crowd's reaction: People might leave feeling like they had a great time, confused or simply ripped off.
How do you view the music industry of today? Does it even exist anymore? The internet has become and invaluable tool for the DIY band of today, yesterday and tomorrow.
What advice would you like to give other bands? Do what you want to do, make your voice heard. You'll find a listener(s) out there somewhere.
What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Longetivity and staying creative at the same time.
What is best/worst with playing the clubs? This could be an endless debate...
Tell us about upcoming gigs and why we should be at them? You should be at lots of live music gigs, not just our's. Save your scene, if you don't have one, then make one! Basements, houses, bars, wherever you can make it work.
What is your favorite crappy instrument? Mike's drum kit.
Whats your Pre-show ritual?
Nothing really to speak of, we just show up and play.
Do you have anything to add? We'd like to both thank everyone out there that has supported us in any way... And as always, Get Haggard!
