interview with A FAILING DEVOTION

What is the name of your band? A FAILING DEVOTION.

How was the band formed? Originally, we were 3 guys (Rémi, Toph & Alex) and we were looking a bass player “Fred” and after that we met our singer “Max” in a gig.

Where are all band members from? / Who does what in the band? We are all come from north in France ( 59). Max (singer) / Rémi (drummer) / Alex (guitar player) / Fred (bass player/backing vocals) / Toph (guitar player)
What was the ambition of the band when you started? Bunch of friends who love playing music and modern metal together. We wanted to record a lot of CD and be able to play into international gig and major metal festival.

Could you explain your music to someone that hasn’t heard you? Our music is an inexhaustible energy, a mix between emotion and sincerity, firmly rooted in the metal sphere without compromise label.

Where was the latest gig? SHAKALAKA, Bar, Hazebrouck, France.

Who writes your songs? /Who writes the music who writes lyrics? All of us, we share our idea and record one or two riffs to find out if we like it or not.
Why did you pick that particular style? / What are your songs about? We didn’t really choose our style of music. It’s more about our inspiration, our mood who created our style of music. After that, people decided to add it at a type of metal.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We write our own songs.

Have you made any albums? / If yes what are they? We recorded a LP with 4 songs (2012) and our first album THE FALLEN (come out  Sept. 22th  2014)

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Yes,we have two clips on our Youtube Channel (AFDOfficial). The first was filmed in our rehearsal room and the song (SUMMER’S GONE) is from the LP. We work on a new clip for the new album.

At what age did you start playing? 13 years oldfor the most of us.

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? Between 20 and 25 years old.

What year was the band started? 2011, with this line-up.

Best/worst gig you've played? The worst gigs are already forgotten but the best, I think, it was in Arras for an Open air Festival; we’ve played for the first time in a really big stage and the crowd was just amazing. The most Rock n’roll/Trash gig was in Belgium in a small bar. It’s still unforgettable.

What places will you be playing in the immediate future? Our partnerships (Dream on, Nao Noise and M&O Music) are working right now on our next Tour. A few dates are already booked you can check them on our facebook page.

Where have you played from then till now? A lot of in north of France (this is where we come from). Perpignan (Fr), Orléans (Fr), Paris (Fr), Amiens (Fr) and in Belgium too.

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? Gojira during the terra incognita tour. There were almost unknown but they already got the thing to hypnotize the audience.

Is it always the same songs live? We orchestrated our set to captivate the attention of our audience and drag them in few seconds in our musical universe. We keep the same line-up because our songs are linked together.

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? We were on tour the last year for one week and we have already a lot of gigs behind us.

How big crowds do you usually play for? It depends on the size of the place where we are playing. We’ve already played in front of 30 and 2000 people.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? We will spend the last semester to promote the album. Of course we will promoting it with gigs, making a video clip, interviews ;).

Where do you usually play? We used to play in bars, festivals…

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? We love the modern productions, so we wanted our songs sound to be this way. It’s one of the reasons, we definite our styles like Modern Metal. Our inspiration depends of which bands we listen at the moment to create new stuffs.

What are your sources of inspiration? For the lyrics, it’s life that inspired us. All the troubles, deceptions we can meet on our way.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? It could be interesting in the fact to discover the universe of a band. If you love the band and you want to support them the next step is to purchase the album.

What would be your dreams for the band? Play everywhere. It’s the goal of all the bands. We love to be on stage… Mother Fucker !

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? We listen a lot of Metal music at the main time but some guys of the band listen Rock, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Electro by exemple.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? To see the closure of venues. More and more bars close their doors because of noise caused by the concerts. Soundproofing is very expensive and not everyone can afford it. I also hope that in the future grants will not become one of the black sheep of the current crisis. Without these places, culture will struggle to survive.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? Forget a part of a song. Really, I don’t know. We try to be the most concentrated as possible so we don’t have the time to think about that.
What songs and what years were they released? All the songs of the album were released in 5 months so between October 2013 and February 2014. And the recording started on March 2014.

How important are your fans? Without them, what are we? It’s nice to see people coming after a show and congratulate us. We have some fans who are there at all our gigs and make us feel really grateful about our music.

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? Follow us in gigs and helping us to make our album (by a financial support).

How often do you rehearse? 3 times per week.

Where do you rehearse? In north of France in Dunkerque.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? OPIUM & NO REGRETS.

What do you feel is the best live band you've seen? GOJIRA, METALLICA, HIMSA, LAMB OF GOD and many more.

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? To fact to love playing music together and always try to see faraway.
