Interview with Accursed Spawn.

What´s the name of your band? Accursed Spawn.

How was the band formed?

Adam: The band was formed in 2009 by Jay, Luke and Paul, as well as Shawn (ex-guitar) and Andre (ex-bass).

Jay: Mikael (bass, who also plays in ...From the Deep) joined in late 2013, and Adam joined in back in 2011.

Can you tell about your band?

Adam: Accursed spawn is a lean, mean, death metal machine intent on unleashing sonic hell on your earholes while maintaining a tongue and cheek criticism toward depravity of all kinds.

Jay: What he said.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band?

The band members are all from Ottawa, the capital of Canada.

Luke Wargasm – Lead vocals

Adam Pell – Lead guitars, vocals

Paul Kelly – Lead Guitars

Mikael Bürch – Bass guitar

Jay Cross – Drums

What was the ambitions of the band when you started?

Adam: To play music and go to places we have not visited before!

Jay: And make as much noise as possible along the way. And probably irritate about half of the residents of the places we go.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you?

Jay: We're a mash between old school and new school death metal, with some extra flavour in there. Cannibal Corspe, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Cryptopsy and Morbid Angel are probably our most frequent comparisons if that helps.

Adam: Our music is the most expensive beer coaster you will ever own.

Jay: Also, what he said.

Who writes your songs?/ who writes the music who writes lyrics?

Adam: It's a group Collaboration on the music and song titles. Lyrics are written by Luke, though.

Jay: Generally speaking Adam or Paul will write a song, make a pre-prod so that I can practice it, and then we work out all the kinks, transitions and what not at the jam spot.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about?

Adam: We decided to play this type of music because we are fans as well. Our songs as a whole delve into various tales of sadism, perversion, and ultraviolence. We do this to pay homage to the bands that inspired us, as well as to bring to light the darker side of humankind.

Jay: I never heard the word ultraviolence before, but I'm going to start using it from now on.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers?

Adam: We play covers for fun, but primarily focus on composing our own material.

Jay: Covers are cool live but we haven't ever recorded one.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they?

Adam: We have three EPs.

2009 Dismember the Informant

2011 Engendering a Sociopath

2014 Putrid

Do you have any clips on YouTube?

Adam: Yes we do!

Jay: You can check/out subscribe to the channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaEuDiRwPuZnUXCm_qgEArQ

What got you started in music?

Adam: I got started in music when my older brother bought a guitar on my birthday. At the time, it was a sibling rivalry issue. I wanted to get better than him to spite the aforementioned fact.

Jay: I was always into music and used to be big on sports. I found picking up the sticks and playing metal was the best combination between the two worlds. Playing death metal can be damn exhausting sometimes (laughs).

At what age did you start playing?

Adam: Twelve years old.

Jay: Around thirteen or fourteen.

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? Adam: Mostly around Ottawa and Montreal for the remainder of the year. Next year we will look to branch out east.

How do you get psyched up for a gig?

Adam: A couple beers and a quick guitar warmup.

Jay: A shot of whiskey, lots of stretching, and a good warm up on the practice pad.

What are your goals with your music?

Adam: To push my limits as a songwriter and to offend the ignorant.

Jay: Have fun, and maintain a creative outlet.

What are your sources of inspiration?

Adam: Lots of death and thrash metal, Reading, Movies, the news…

Jay: What he said.

What's the first step when making a new song?

Adam: A good hook.

Jay: Telling Adam that his first “good hook” isn't good enough.

Have you been in any other bands?

Adam: I played in a band called Aggressor for a long time, I currently play bass/vocals in a band called Antlion as well.

Jay: I also play drums in a death/thrash band called Mortor, and have been in the odd band back in the day but buddies around town.

What would you do if there was no music?

Adam: I would be a real asshole.

Jay: I'd be even more of an asshole.

How important are your fans?

Adam: Without the fans, there is no Accursed Spawn.

Jay: What he said.

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you?

Adam: I’ve autographed a couple nice pairs of tits…

Jay: No he didn’t.

Do you have any webpages? Jay: We've got most of the social media stuff: Facebook | Twitter | Soundcloud | Bandcamp | YouTube

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there?

Adam: Play what makes you happy. Not someone else.

Jay: That's actually pretty good advice. Do that.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Adam: Gas prices and shitty promoters.

What is best/worst thing about playing clubs? Jay: best – the people/atmosphere (everyone's a lot closer) worst – the noise we make when we play in them

How would you describe your sound in one sentence Adam: This ain’t your granddaddy’s death metal.

Do you have anything to add? Adam: Thanks for the interview and support! Maybe one day we’ll be able to perform for you in your country!
Jay: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us dude! Cheers to everyone that's made it to the end of the interview.
