interview with Nathrath

What´s the name of your band? Nathrath

How was the band formed? Grim and me (Morvan) formed the band 2004 after leaving a other band to go our own way of creativity.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We all live in the same city. Grim and me plays guitar, Knarz destroys the drums. The bass-guitar will be done in future by me and Knarz. About the vocal-position I could'nt say something at the moment. There are different ideas which we talk about and decide when the songs are written.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? There was no. Really. If there was a drive, then to give our feelings and sights a creative voice.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? Hehe! Expect everything. Dive into deep darkness, let your soul fly and then get awaked by a hammer.

Where was your first gig? We did only one gig at a small bar called On the Rocks to release our demo.

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? It's a teamwork of us three. There is an idea for a riff of one, and then it grow to a song. The lyrics was written by me until now, but if one of the others has a good idea they could also realize the lyrics.

What genre do you feel you are? We play METAL. No exact genre, cause we won't limited ourselfes.

What are your songs about? Human beeing. Mostly the darker sides of living or better: surviving. We use a lot of metaphor to give the listener more space to use theier own brain. So everybody will find something different in our songs, thats also the reason why we will don't publish the lyrics at our releases. Use your brain and you will live.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? Only own material. The coversongs are only for the rehearsals to get warm.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? We work at the moment at our first album. We released only a demo and a EP, yet. So after 10 years since forming this band it is time for more. Hehe.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? There exists a recording of an unused song of our demo and only the audio-clips of the whole EP.

How old are you? We are all three at the beginning of the 30s. Nearly old mens.

At what age did you start playing? Very late. I think with seventeen.

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? Our first stage-experince we had close to the founding of the first band. So we were 17. With Nathrath we did our first gig at the age of 25.

Best/worst gig you've played? Either experinces at the same gig. Cause it was the only one. There are always things which have done better and makes you angry, but at the end it is live and that is everytime a incredible feeling.

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? There are no plans. We will see what will come, and reduce our main activity at the rehersal-room to write new music.

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? Hard to choose. And I can only speek for me. Mayhem is the band which have never disappointed me with their rituals, but last year I had the chance to see Black Sabbath, and this performance I will remember forever .

How do you get psyched up for a gig? All we do is keep calm. Drink a beer and talk to some people. The stagefright comes at the moment you plug in the guitar to the amp. After ringing the first note this feeling reduces and you do the same like every week at the rehearsals.

What are your goals with your music? There are no big aims. Only the will to do what we want, and express our feelings with the music.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? There are always influences, indifferent if new or old. Sometimes you have to be like a sponge and have to drain the best for yourself out of all.

What are your sources of inspiration? Books, movies, other music, experiences. All what you let be a part of your life.

What's the first step when making a new song? To write a good riff, which you can't get out of the head.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? As a collector I would hope that all physical sound carriers will survive. But the time moves on, and so I could understand that some people only want one song from a band and buy this as a digital download.

We gave our music as a free download to all who are interested at our homepage.

The illegal way I would say is a wrong one. You steel the freedom to be creative of every musician and what have you then? A lot of files which you won't listen to in one year? Isn't it exciting to get a cassette, CD or LP? Pull it out of the wrap and listen to it through a good hifi-equipment? Look at a great booklet and get a visual idea of the musical concept?

I would buy the records I like, all the time and reduce other expenses in life for it.

What would be your dreams for the band? Go on, like we do at the moment.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to?

It's like the creating. No bounderies. To list here all i would need more space.

To get an idea of my opinion: Celtic Frost, Genesis, Kreator, Led Zeppelin, Savage Grace, Judas Priest, Mayhem, Nine Inch Nails, PJ Harvey, Black Sabbath, Mötley Crüe.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? To be deaf.

Have you been part of any other projects? Have you been in any other bands? The last 5 years I played the guitar at Thornesbreed. But I left them in the beginning of this years. Knarz is involved in a band called Poetry Can Wait, which is on hold at the moment.

What would you do if there was no music?  Die? No idea, cause music is a part of human beeing.

How important are your fans? For Nathrath they are'nt necassary. No doubt, it is good to know that someone wants to hear your music, but at first I have to be a fan of our own music, and all others are a cool bonus. This sight has to do a lot with my opnion of creative freedom.

How often do you rehearse?  Mostly once a week, but if there is more time we do also two rehearse at a week..

Where do you rehearse? We own a small rehearsal-room at an old factory.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? 'Fall into pitch black' and a new one called 'Pieces'

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? The possibility to do some creative, something new, something different. Breaking out of the normal life and giving a feeling a voice. The idea of earning money with this style was never a part of our band. It's an illusion, or a way of mindcontrol and chains around your whole body.

Do you have any webpages? We have homepage www.nathrath-hell.de.vu and you can find us at facebook.

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Be yourself and do what you want. No compromises to all non-participants.

How do you view the musicindustry of today? There are a lot of bloodsuckers out there. If you are at the right time, at the right place you have the chance to get someone, but at the next moment you could also be the one who is fucked up. Better you have small wishes and dreams that comes along with reality.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? The own aspiration. All you do is for the moment and within the next step you only can do it better.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence Rough sound wall.
