interview with Bow Messiah

What´s the name of your band? Bow Messiah

How was the band formed? Chris and Tim worked together for a short time and loved the same types of metal, we got together for a few drinks and i had a kit at my house so we got drunk and started jamming some tunes

Can you tell about your band? We are a 5 piece from Woodend, New Zealand, we have been together for 7ish years

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? Andrew - Vocals, Jason- Guitar, Chris - Guitar, Tim- Drums, Vin - Bass

We are all local guys who were mates before the band started, and Vin was in another band in the scene when we took him on

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? To compose the most brutal, in your face metal we could possibly produce

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? We have finally found the sub genre we are really happy with, i'd call it progressive deathcore/metal, We are currently writing a lot of Alien based tracks so at this stage i'd call it Alien Metal

Where was your first gig? Al's Bar, probably early 2008, our Manager and close friend was good mates with Al Park so we were lucky to get some gigs very early on when we were just starting out

Where was the latest gig? Our last gig was supporting Australian metal greats Psycroptic

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? Jason writes a lot of the music, he has some amazing ideas and basically brings finished tracks along to rehersal, Chris and Andrew write the lyrics

Who has the best since of humor in the band? Vin i'd say his impressions leave us rolling round on the floor sometimes!

What genre do you feel you are? We've been classed as progressive deathcore but we just call it deathmetal

Why did you pick that particular style? Its the influence from the music we are listening to now, at the start it was lamb of god, slayer into cannibal corpse and now its more Carnifex, Aversions crown, Thy art is murder

What are your songs about? The latest EP really consisted of a mix of subjects from Perfect virus being about an alien virus to Godless being about the brainwashing of religion

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? all our own material, we don't fuck round with covers

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Yes we have a few live ones from throughout our career and a few tracks from the EP, we are currently working on a lyric video for our upcoming single "Origins of Deception"

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? Chris is like the oldest in the band being 27 when the band started, Jason, Tim and Andrew were 18

What year was the band started? 2007

Best/worst gig you've played? Best -  Probably New years eve with 8 foot sativa, Worst - 2009 Metalfest when we had our set cut short after like 2 songs!

Where have you played from then till now? last year we did a national tour over 6 shows throughout the country, so most hot spots in NZ apart from Auckland, looking to get overseas in the near future

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? Cannibal corpse, hands down

Is it always the same songs live? We go through different stages of what we play live, for the last few months we have been playing mainly the ep songs

What has been the best/most promising gig so far? The few shows we did with 8 Foot Sativa last year, great guys and amazing musicians

What are the plans for the rest of the year? We are releasing the new lyric video soon then working on new material toward our first full length

Where do you usually play? Churchill's in the city is where most of the metal gigs are held we've played heaps of shows there

How do you get psyched up for a gig? Have a few drinks, relax and mingle with the crowd

What are your goals with your music? We would be stoked to get some overseas gigs, but the next goal is to get the album done

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? A bit of both i'd say, you have to remember what got you into playing music but definitely the genre we are in now is reflected by the music we are listening to

What's the first step when making a new song? A theme or direction you want to take and the structure of the music, lyrics are the last to be added

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? Just depends on what the band is offering in the way of free/paid downloads and hard copy music, its usually cheap enough for paid downloads as the costs are lower

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? all sorts really from classic rock to slam and everything in between, digital music has no soul

How important are your fan? Its great seeing new and old faces alike at the gigs, its awesome hearing good comments from those who have seen us for the first time

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? Maybe one of our mates with our logo tattooed, i'm pretty sure we had a stalker there for a while lol

How often do you rehearse? at least once a week, keep it tight

Where do you rehearse? at the local youth center, its close and we can jam all night

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? the new track "Origins of Deception" its fresh and new and tricky to play, and an old favorite "Deceived"

Do you have any webpage? We have our own webpage http://bowmessiah.webnode.com/ ,We also have a facebook page, bandcamp, youtube, reverbnation and twitter pages

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Practice hard and as a band when you can, its one thing to jam in ya room but totally different with a band, and regularly

How do you view the music industry of today? Its a different place in the age of the internet, your spoiled for choice as far as new music and bands go, 20 years ago the only music you could find was in a music store or on the radio, today its at the touch of a button

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? For us it has been losing members, its always hard trying to replace someone

What is best/worst with playing the clubs?

Best - The small venues are great to play in, the acoustics in the small venues we play are great, the

worst - The late weeknight shows when ya sober and have totally drunk fuckers spitting all over ya

How would you describe your sound in one sentence fucking creepy.

What was one of the most quarrelsome times for you in the band? When we were on tour, catering to everyone's needs especially when it comes to food

Whats your Pre-show ritual?Andrew always has a vomit before we play, hes been doing it for years lol
