interview with Us Against the World

What´s the name of your band? Us Against the World

How was the band formed? In 2005, former member of local punk band Abbenay joined with members of Bigspin, Ten Cake and Reckless to combine styles and start a new band.

Can you tell about your band? We play 90’s melodic punk-hardcore, all five members born and raised in Mexico City active in the early local punk scene.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band?

All members from Mexico City:

Leo: former drummer of the band now plays lead guitar.

Fids: current drummer (current member of local band Gula)

Aldo: Rhythm guitar (current member of local band Tungas)

Nollie: Bass

Ihxel: Vocals

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? Create the music that we love, express through it our frustrations, communicate the ideas we want to share with people.

Play shows, have fun with friends, meet new places, travel together.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? It’s a melodic take on punk-rock, with female vocals, songs that don’t have a specific format to adhere to. Some faster than others, some raspier, some calmer.

Where was your first gig? At the legendary Foro Alicia, local venue that has been active for 18 years now, a trylu respectable achievment for Mexico City.

Where was the latest gig? Foro Alicia as well.

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? All members get together and kick off with a single riff. We finish the music altogether and once that is done, I take the rough recording to put the melody in myself, along with the lyrics.

Who has the best since of humor in the band? Aldo (Rhythm Guitar) and Fids (Drums).

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? We all get along amazing, which creates a great energy flow in practice and at shows. Main drawback is time availabilty (or call it lack of commitment) as we all either work, study and / or play in more bands. That at times complicates inner sync. Regarding genre, we locate ourselves in punk-rock.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? That style is the one we’ve all grown up listening to, being it the one that has spoken the most to each and everyone of us. Some of our members skate (or used to in their teen years) and punk and skate have always gone hand-in-hand well.

Some of our songs speak of anarchism, equality, politics; others speaks of personal experiences, love, etc.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We write and play our own material, we rely on cover songs only on special occasions and as a fun resource.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? First material we released was a 7” Split named “Pourrito!” with Fat Wreck Chords Canadian band The Sainte Catherines, consisted of two songs each / 2008

First EP CD “Kings Will Fall” was released a year after that, 2009, seven songs long.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Only non-official ones, fan-uploaded / live shows mostly.

How old are you?/What got you started in music? I’m 28. My father is a musician, music was always present as an important part of my daily life while growing up, in my teen years it became a fulfilling tool to let out all pent up feelings of angst and frustration of seeming helpless and powerless in such an un-just world.

At what age did you start playing? I started singing in bands at 15.

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? With first line-up we were 19, 20, 25, 26.

What year was the band started? 2006

Best/worst gig you've played?

Best show probably along side all our friends with whom we share stage with at Foro Alicia, with local bands. All those shows are always amazing, fun and positive.

Worst show: don’t have a specific one in mind, but probably one where we were all feeling either shitty or overwhelmed and played with poor energy and cero devotion.

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? Mexico City and anywhere people will have us.

Where have you played from then till now? Mexico, different states throughout.

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? I’d personally have to say Randy in Madrid, Spain in 2001.

Is it always the same songs live? No, we mix and match old with new.

What has been the best/most promising gig so far? Any in which we’ve received a huge response from the audience, it happens every so often and that makes the show worth it as well as our effort.

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? With The Sainte Catherines, back in 2008, about two weeks long in Mexico.

How big crowds do you usually play for? Could be from 30 to 300 people.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? Write songs, release a new record.

Where do you usually play? Several local independent venues in Mexico City.

How do you get psyched up for a gig? The thrill of engaging with audience, seeing unkown people singing your songs, feeding off their energy.

What are your goals with your music? Only goal I personally have is to enjoy it every time. Get goosebumps when writing, create with my friends new and uplifting feelings of encouragment and hope.

When did you decide to go all in for the music? I am not all in for the music. I have to split my time between a very demanding job, sustaining a home that I share with 5 animals, band practice, shows and sharing fun times with friends.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? I try not to rely on other bands for inspiration but more on personal experiences that have given me a new or different perspective on life. Things I can grow from and then speak about.

What are your sources of inspiration? All feeling that rise from the heart.

What's the first step when making a new song? For us it’s a riff, be it a bass or a guitar one. We move from there

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums?

Perfectly fine, can’t fight against the inevitable evolution of the techological industry. Better to join than to lose your energy in opposing something that’s impossible to control.

Also, there’s a lot of people out there that can’t afford to buy a record, I prefer to know that they have the available chance to download music for free, music with the potential to help them better withstand all the troubles they can eventually go through in life.

Best to rely on other forms of making money out of the band, merch, shows, etc. than having to limit

That’s my very personalopinion. (Ihxel)

What would be your dreams for the band? Touring the world together, having a steady income from it to allow us to quit our jobs and have the time to practice every day.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? I personally love the alternative 90’s scene but punk and hardcore represent close to 80% of what I enjoy listening to. I do like pop very much as well.

What do you hold most dear? In the band? Creating emotions that come from special moments we may have and being able to share that with people you appreciate and admire.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? Losing the pre-show nervousness.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? Forgetting lyrics, blacking out.

What songs and what years were they released?

“Pourrito!" Split / 2008

Fire to the Ground

U Know my Name

"Kings Will Fall" / 2009

Kings Will Fall

U Know my Name

Breathing

Isolation

Who We Are

Close Your Eyes Before You Jump

This Means War

Have you been part of any other projects? Yes, started in Abbenay back in 2004 and very early in my teen years I sang with local doom-rock band Guilt Feelings.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? Film production.

What would you do if there was no music? No music in the world? Probably wouldn’t miss it because it wasn’t even there to begin with.

If there was no music available I’d focus 100% on film creating and script wiritng.

How important are your fans? Very important, we enjoy if they enjoy, but we focus more on enjoying ourselves what we’re creating as a group.

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? On an out-of-town show last year a girl came up to me and gave me a baby hat saying that she had found it lying on the ground and felt that i’t be important for us to have it as a good luck charm. I still keep it with me.

How often do you rehearse? Once a week for two hours.

Where do you rehearse? Wherever we can, we tend to move around often but now we’ve been steady at Leo’s house.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Start Again (from a compilation released last year names “Prueba Esto 3”)

the new one we’re writing.

What do you feel is the best live band you've seen? Randy hands down. Tungas also have a kick ass live show.

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? I believe it’s the feeling that you expose to the world that help you deal with life in a better way. Music will always be there for you, it doens’t judge. People and material things won’t.

Do you have any webpages?

Facebook page: facebook.com/uatwband

Twitter: twitter.com/U_A_T_W

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Just enjoy. Never take things t0o seriously or you’ll become involved in aspects of the industry that aren’t all that important as the music itself is.

Describe your show, visually and musically All emotion and heart on a sleeve. Just five friends that get on the stage and do their best, focus and deliver all their best feelings possible.

How do you view the musicindurty of today? I don’t care about the music indsutry really, I just focus more on what my friends in bands are doing and what their new sings sound like.

What advice would you like to give other bands? Same as previous question.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Language barriers in a country that doesn’t support it, maybe not composing songs in the regular formula.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs?

Best: when the PA rules and your sound awesome.

Worst: when the PA sucks and you sound like shit.

Tell us about upcomming gigs and why we should be at them? We’re playing at Camiche’s (local band) record release show in the Pasaguero Venue (local, in MXC) on September the 27th along side a killer 2-piece Venezuelan band called Cardiel.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence Melodic 90’s punk.

What is your favorite crappy instrument? hahaha, hmm… I’m not a fan of the saxophone, I always visualize Kenny G dressed in white in a Yacht on the sea.

What was one of the most quarrelsome times for you in the band? When we toured with The Sainte Catherines we ended up sick of each other, but in a normal family type of anger, the one that goes away pretty fast.

Whats your Pre-show ritual? We don’t have one.
