interview with Embrace of Disharmony

Have any of you played in other bands? Our drummer Emiliano plays also in Shores of Null (Gothic/Doom) and Hatesound (Sepultura & Soulfly cover band) and both him and Matteo play in Noumeno (Instrumental Prog).
How is it that you started playing music? Just like any other band: some guys with a strong passion for music trying to put something together.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Gloria, lead and backing vocals, 32. Matteo, guitars, lead backing and harsh vocals, electronic programming, 27. Leonardo, bass, 27. Emiliano, drums, 33.
Have you had other previous members? This this band has changed countless musicians during the years. Originally it was composed by six members (there were a male singer and a keyboard player) and only Matteo and Gloria survive from the very first lineup.
Did you make music even when you were young? Matteo started composing music when he was around 18 year old.
Where are you from? We're from Rome, Italy
What year did the band form? 2006/2007
What's your style of genre? We play some dark progressive metal with avantgarde and extreme metal contaminations.
What inspires you? Being exposed to music made by other people is the only source of inspiration and motivation in composing your own.
How often and where do you rehearse? Normally we rehearse two or three hours once a week in our reharsal studio but when there's a gig incoming it can be twice a week.
How have you developed since you started with the music? After some years of hard work we finally managed to release our first album under the record label My Kingdom Music in 2014. We also had the opportunity of playing live gigs with some renowed metal bands in the international scene, so we have made a good progress and we are proud of it.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We are currently under a deal with House of Ashes production. A booking agency can be very useful for a band.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We have a contract with an italian label, My kingdom music. Just like a booking agency, collaborating with a record label is a very important step in a band's career.
What made you decide to make this music? It's just a matter of following your own inspiration. Nothing was really planned, we just started composing and our own style come out.
What are your songs about? We take inspiration from literature, as well as mythology and general aspects of human psyche.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Matteo and our former bass player have composed most of the songs we have played up to now, but all of us plays its part during the songwriting: once one of them is roughly complete everyone works on his specific parts enriching or modifying them. The lyrics are written by Gloria and Matteo.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? We start with the music, then the lyrics come quite easily when we focus on the mood of each song.
Do you compose in a certain environment? We composed most of our music at home, but no particular environment is needed.
Have you done any covers live? Yes, at the very beginning we've played some songs from Dream Theater, Iron Maiden and Stratovarius but we prefer to perform our own songs.
What language do you sing in? Mostly in English, but we have some vocal inserts in italian and latin.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? We actually have never paid attention to that, but realistically it should be something centered around 30 years old.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We play mostly songs from our full length, varying the setlist depending on how much time we have on stage.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? Actually we don't have a "special" place, but in Rome there are a few clubs that organize live events for underground metal bands so we gravitate around two or three of them.
What was your first gig like? It has been eight years ago, we were very young and excited because we finally had the possibility to play our music for other people. Paradoxically it has been one of the longest concerts we've ever performed. We played both our songs and some cover for almost one hour.
What was your latest gig? On August 6th we have played as headliners in a small "open air" festival organized in the courtyard of a club in Rome.
Have you had to cancel a gig? Luckily no, we never had to.
Where have you played live this year? We have played mostly in Rome and in Brescia, in the north of Italy, where we've had the opportunity to play as opening act for Arcturus.
Where do you plan to gig the coming year? We have no plans right now, but something will come up along the way.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? Apart from CDs we have made some t-shirts and we started to sell them at the end of 2012.
Where can people buy your merchandise? We sell it at our live shows, otherwise it can be purchased requesting it on our social networks or via email.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? It brought some good changes and some bad changes. The old music industry system was finally demolished, but mid-sized bands basically lost the possibility to make a living from music. It is a very very complex problem and we are still right in the storm centre, so it's impossible to make a judgement. Within some years (or decades) probably a new stable situation will arise, then it will be possible to really know if things were changed for good or bad.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? As we said previously, the music industry has been of course greatly reduced.
What do you think of my work? We appreciate it very much because it gives to bands like ours the possibility to talk a little bit about themselves and promote their music. Thank you!
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? It will of course allow someone to approach our music, even only for curiosity.
Do you have any role models or idols? There are many people deserving admiration and respect for what they do or what they have done. As far as music is concerned, of course we have many metal bands, too much to be named.
Why do you think that they exist? Everyone has an artistic model to relate himself to, it’s quite normal in our opinion and is something that can be related to music as well as to many other aspects of life. In this particular case you start to listen to some good stuff, you like it and decide to work on your own project with some “musical milestone” in your mind. It’s related to inspiration and desire to improve your knowledge and ability in the field you’ve chosen.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? As an modern-sounding metal band with a big focus for experimentation we are of course more inspired by bands that are more active today.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Lineup problems in general, they were many. The worst moment has been in 2009 when 2/3 of the band left for different motivations and we had to rebuilt the line up almost entirely. Concerning the recording of our full length one version of the mixing has been lost because of technical problems and has had to be performed again. The positive side of all the bad things we have experienced is that up to now all the obstacles have been overcome.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Composing music is a wonderful art but the path is full of difficulties. Bite the bullet and go ahead in spite of difficulties because satisfaction arrives in the end, and it’s priceless.
How do you get psyched for a gig? We try to concentrate ourselves as much as we can, trying to have good time with people that come to enjoy the gig with us.
Do you have any new material? We are working on some great new material at the moment, and we hope to record it in a couple of years
What are your web sites? www.embraceofdisharmony.com. On this page there are all the links useful to greet us on social networks like facebook and youtube and our email contact.
How can people reach you? Apart from the internet, if some of your readers will end up in one of our live gigs we’ll be happy to say hello and have a beer together!
What are your plans for the future? We’re writing new stuff for our second full-length and would like to perform some concert abroad.
Do you have something to add? Not really. Just thanks to you for granting us this space on you blog. And to all the readers, we hope you will enjoy our music!
