interview with Pale From Sunlight

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes we have, but under different names. Krullnaag has a doom/sludge project, and Vemetrith is in another depressive black metal project, as well as a dark ambient project.
How is it that you started playing music? Pale From Sunlight started as an experiment that we grew to love and decided to take seriously.
What are your names? / Who plays what?
Vemetrith - Vocals/ some ambience
Krullnaag - Everything else
Have you had other previous members? Not for recording, however we are working on getting a full band together to play live.
Did you make music even when you were young? Yes, we've both been writing and playing for a number of years.
Where are you from? Sioux Falls, South Dakota
What year did the band form? 2015
What's your style of genre? Depressive/ Atmospheric black metal typically, though we do like to incorporate doom and post rock elements.
What inspires you? The pain of every day living, love, loss, and death.
How have you developed since you started with the music? It has become almost therapeutic for the both of us.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? We are both interested in photography, and Vemetrith is greatly involved in art of all mediums.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We are currently working on a contract with a label, though nothing is official quite yet so we can't name-drop at this time.
What made you decide to make this music? Pain, anguish, and necessity for outlet.
What are your songs about?
We actually have a story that goes along with our debut album "Love Was Never an Option" lyrically. Essentially Vemetrith is the main character in the story.
Heartbroken after reminiscing on lost friends, family, and lovers, he decides that he has nothing to live for and takes one
last walk around his neighborhood, remembering his childhood, etc. before he walks down to a clearing in the middle of the forest near his childhood home to lay
down in and let hypothermia take him. As he dies, he continues to reminisce on the things in his life that led to this moment. Eventually, his spirit leaves his body
and enters the astral plane, but just before it reaches the next world, it's sucked back into a transformed and disfigured version of his old body, still laying in the clearing,
and it is no longer winter, but instead spring.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Krullnaag composes and Vemetrith writes the lyrics, except for "Last Sunset", which was written completely by Krullnaag.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? We most often begin by recording the music.
What language do you sing in? English
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? Depending on when we get a band together, we may possibly tour as well as play some hometown shows.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We actually haven't started yet, however shirts and CD's are in the works.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? We offered our first EP as well as our first album online for free, knowing that it would inevitably be downloaded illegally and we were more interested in getting our music out there as opposed to making money. However, we wrote a 20 minute bonus track to be released on the CD for those
who actually purchase the album when it's made available.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? I think that while it has made it harder to be reimbursed for your work, it also has allowed bands to get exposure that may not otherwise have the chance.
What do you think of my work? We are impressed by the questions as well as the volume of bands that you've interviewed, and are happy you've contacted us.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? We think it will help us gain more exposure as well as help our fans understand our vision better.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? We find inspiration in many of both.
What have been your biggest obstacles?¨Finding a band to play live shows, especially living in as rural of an area as we do.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Put everything you have into it. There's too many half-assed bands in the DSBM/ black metal scene these days that sound so boring and trite that there's no real emotion in it.
Do you have any new material? Yes, we have a cover we're releasing soon, and we've already started working on the follow-up to "Love Was Never an Option"
