interview with B1nary Cur10us

What´s the name of your band? B1nary Cur10us (and yes that is a sex pun)

How was the band formed? Well, I suppose one could argue that it was a lengthy process of musical dissatisfaction, an excess of free time and a collective disdain for socializing in the traditional manner; but, personally I accredit it to a glut of video games and Craigslist.

Can you tell me about your band? As of this moment (like this moment right…now), B1nary Cur1ous is a two piece featuring Bill (Duke Manning) Sihr on 8 string bass and Kyle (Baby Bird Applebaum) on percussions (more to come when they come). Our style is a frantic jambalaya of progressive and/ or math rock/metal, Eurasian folk and the soothing sounds of the 8 and 16 bit eras which we playfully call Chimer-rock (Chimera + Rock).

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We both reside in New Jersey (South Jersey) . Our general order of operations is Bill spends too much time reading spastic articles on the inter-webs, stumbles upon some nigh-abandoned scale and noodles away. He then plays the tune on an 8-string (octave) bass guitar to Kyle, who then tries to translate his nonsense into audibly coherent works. He then brings down the thunder (drums) and a song is born!

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? We both have a desire for creating something wholly original, regardless of whether or not the outcome is desirable, which was the initial impetus for forming B1nary cur10us. Currently, however, we just want as many beer tickets as possible.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? …That’s a tough one. Perhaps is Nobuo Uematsu decided to team up with Robert Fripp and rewrite every Devo song? We consistently hear entirely new comparisons from friends and fans alike; everything from Nightwish, to King Crimson to Cream. B1nary Cur10us is what you make of it I suppose.

Where was your first gig? A very interesting book store in Delaware with our good friends over in Tone and Willow Talk. Bill bought some Ren and Stimpy  comics and paid zero dollars in sales tax.

Where was the latest gig? The Other night we played at a magical venue in Manayunk PA called The Side Room. They were very hospitable people and the promoter, Sam, was especially generous to us.

Who writes your songs?/ who writes the music who writes lyrics? The writing process usually begins with Bill writing all the bass parts and the lyrics and then Kyle comes in and lays down the drums and makes sure that Bill didn’t get ridiculously carried away.

Who has the best since of humor in the band? Patton Oswalt.

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? There really isn’t all that much to complain about outside our natural ability to frighten off potential fellow co-conspirators. That all said, we are both very proud of the product of our labors. As for the genre, the above mentioned chimer-rock seems most applicable.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? Someone had to do it eventually. Better us than them.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? It would be very surprising if either of us really knew how to play another band’s material.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? Currently no; however, we have lofty plans for the coming months and will certainly be working on a release of some kind. Perhaps an 8 track.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? All of our various medias, be they social, or otherwise, can be found via our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/B1naryCur10us

How old are you?/What got you started in music?  We are both one quarter of a century old. As for music, men do crazy things when they don’t have reliable access to the female anatomy. As for Kyle, his family introduced him to a lot of styles of music...and his father used to play the drums.

At what age did you start playing? Bill was 16 when his obsession with Kurt Cobain finally drove him to buy one of those GOD forsaken Estaban guitars and Kyle started playing drums at age 13.

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? Bill didn’t pop his performance cherry until he was old enough to drink (21) and Kyle popped it at age 14.

What year was the band started? October the twenty-fourth, in the Year of Our Lord two-thousand and thirteen, but it’s been a long time coming.

Best/worst gig you've played? Best was probably when we opened for Counter-Earth over at Champion’s Bar in Trenton, NJ. The worst shan’t be spoken of.

What places will you be playing in the immediate future? Kyle’s basement.

Where have you played from then till now? Primarily libation-centric venues throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania, but “Winter is Coming!”

Witch band is the best you´ve seen?  For Bill the only possible answer is when he and another assailant drove half-way across North America to see the debut pseudo-secret performance of Them Crooked Vultures. With Kyle, it was likely the first time he saw Kayo Dot perform at The Social in Orlando Florida. It was the first time he felt his rib cage rattle due to the sound.

Is it always the same songs live? There are certainly ones that are showcased more than others, but B1nary Cur10us takes great pains to maintain the illusion that we have a robust catalog of music.

What has been the best/most promising gig so far? Well, at one gig a bunch of lunatic Evangelical performers prayed for everyone and we’re really hopeful that said act will pay off later on, or at least offset the dirtiness.

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? No, but things change.

How big crowds do you usually play for? Depends on what you define as a crowd.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? Homework, regular work, and depression. We’re really hoping to fit alcoholism in there somewhere; also turkey.

Where do you usually play? Stages seem to be a constant. Often times within earshot of a bartender.

How do you get psyched up for a gig? Beer.

What are your goals with your music? We have this song called The Spins which is meant to reproduce the experience of having alcohol poisoning. We’re really hopeful that one day we will finally get someone to vomit after listening to it.

When did you decide to go all in for the music? When we realized the economy was shot and that there was little hope for gainful employment.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? Eh, every era has great bands. It’s not fair to place a particular emphasis on one age while diminishing the importance of another. We’re all snowflakes.

What are your sources of inspiration? Boss battle themes in Japanese role playing games.

What's the first step when making a new song? Waking up.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? That is certainly a hot topic (unlike the store of the same name). It’s really hard to cry theft when the act does not result in any sort of loss of property rights for anyone involved. Maybe one day when our fans number in the double-digits we can go full Ulrich and start waving signs, but until then fire away.

What would be your dreams for the band?  Getting to flip-off our hierarchical overlords and not have to wake up early for work.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? At this point our tastes are so very eclectic that it is really only fair to say that we listen to the internet on shuffle.

What do you hold most dear? Crushing our enemies, and revel in the sight of seeing them driven before you and hearing the lamentations of their women…also alcohol.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? Full time retain employment.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? That the guy who came and screwed up our show at The Dobbs will return to finish the job.

What songs and what years were they released? All of them all the time.

Have you been part of any other projects? Kyle currently maintains an alter ego as the Drummer for Valacar. Bill has been of some other nothing bands and moonlights as a graduate student.

Have you been in any other bands? Look up.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? …a little more.

What would you do if there was no music? Dedicate ourselves, entirely, to ripping off Patton Oswalt jokes.

How important are your fans? Our parents mean the world to us.

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? This guy at Champion’s Bar, who barely spoke a lick of the Queen’s English started force feeding us tequila shots and doing this wavy dance. We miss that guy.

How often do you rehearse? When the fortunes allow it.

Where do you rehearse? Kyle’s basement.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Iwiij Jach Jaj and Epochelypse.

What do you feel is the best live band you've seen? For Bill it always goes back to Josh Homme. Either Queens of the Stone Age or Them Crooked Vultures. For Kyle it’s These Arms Are Snakes. Those guys would always put on one hell of a show.

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? Beer tickets and the prospect of boobs. Also, the thrill of creating/performing.

Do you have any webpages? https://www.facebook.com/B1naryCur10us/info. We also have an Instagram (b1narycur10us) and a Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/b1nary-cur10us).

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Always ask to see ID before you agree to anything.

Describe your show, visually and musically It’s like watching two mildly out-of-shape- white guys play instruments wrong for 45 minutes.

How do you view the music industry of today? It’s a sinking ship.

What advice would you like to give other bands? We’re the ones who need the advice.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Money.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs? Best is the experience and worst is not having lackeys to move all of our gear.

Tell us about upcoming gigs and why we should be at them? Nothing to report yet, but follow us on FB and we’ll let you know ASAP.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence. Confused Jackie Chan Meme.

What is your favorite crappy instrument? All Instruments are of equal standing in the light of GOD’s love…or the kazoo.

What was one of the most quarrelsome times for you in the band? Naming it.

Whats your Pre-show ritual? Stretching and beer.
