interview with Cielo Drive

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, our drummer Tom is currently working on his own solo project at the moment and its pretty awesome. Its psychedelic rock sorta stuff I think and judging from what he's shown me its pretty great. Our bassist TJ has played here and there in bands but not extensively, and same with myself.

How is it that you started playing music? I think all of us fell in love with rock music when we were kids, due to having families interested in it and introducing us to it, and then fitting in with the music crowd growing up through high school and stuff, it all contributed to who we are and the music that results. We met in high school and just started jamming and hit it off. Been going great since.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? This is an interesting question as the band is made up of all guitarists, however, we all took the role of what we do best. As tom is the only drummer of the band, he took on drums. Our bassist TJ is an awesome guitarist however he fucking kills it on bass so he plays bass. And myself, Steve, I play lead guitar and vocals because thats just what i do best.

Have you had other previous members? Nope, the first time we ever practiced we decided on the power trio thing because we all knew each other and got along well, and adding members would result in power struggles and creative differences, With three people, everyone knows their place and has the space to do their bit as they wish.

Did you make music even when you were young? Every member of our band has played for around 10 years on guitar so we've all been making our own music ever since.

Where are you from? We are from Melbourne, Australia

What year did the band form? We formed just this year, at the very beginning of 2015.

What's your style of genre? This is very difficult to answer, because we have a number of influences, but we play a sort of garage inspired hard rock music with elements of psychedelic rock punk, and of course the blues. My best guess is just to call it hard rock, or garage rock.

What inspires you? We get our inspiration from our youth and what this time of our lives brings to us. I wish this could be crazier, but its really quite simple, We get inspiration from the news, from our environment, and the things we do. We also look up to other bands, we all have our heroes and idols. I think everyone does that.

How often and where do you rehearse? We are still in the final stages of high school here in Melbourne, so we practice regularly in school on breaks and stuff, thats a few days a week. And  on thursdays we practice at a local studio which my friend is a member of and we get in for free.

How have you developed since you started with the music? Our music has run its natural progression, we're working on it and we've found our sound. The main thing thats developed so far is our sense of fashion.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? TJ takes wicked photos and is an amazing cook and Tom makes amazing hot chocolates so i think there may be some job prospects there. All I do myself is Stack shelves at a local supermarket. I think in future we will all be music oriented in our work.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Having a label would be awesome, i mean, isn't that what every musician wants.

What made you decide to make this music? The passion we have for it and how great it feels to play it.

What are your songs about? The songs we're writing are about the perils of being a teenager, religion, school, women of course, and sometimes writing about dreams or absurd thoughts. Sometimes however, a nonsense song about nothing is great, because the listener can find their own personal meaning.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? The music is written mainly by myself, Steve, and is then introduced to the rest of the band who make better parts for bass and drums. If not we collectively make the music as a group. Lyrics are written by myself and Tom, however we still need to perfect the art of lyricism.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? We always start with the music. Lyrics aren't our main concern when we're writing as our music is driven instrumentally.

Do you compose in a certain environment? As i write most of the music, it comes from my bedroom when I'm alone and i turn out all of the lights and close the curtains so its pitch black except for the light of my laptop, and use Apple Logic to get down any riffs that come to mind. If not it's at out rehearsal space, in a regular room and we just jam until we enter a weird musical state where your focusing on nothing but the sound and its liken experience like no other. Its amazing what music can do. When we're in that phase we write some of our riffs.

Have you done any covers live? Fuck yeah, we love playing covers. We like to cover go with the flow by Queens of the Stone Age and Black Night by Deep Purple at most of our gigs, and we always play an instrumental jam of "Green Onions" by Booker T and the MG's in the key of A minor.

What language do you sing in? We sing in english, but in future we would love to feature some japanese lyrics as TJ and Tom learn Japanese and have an interest in the language and culture.

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? The least we've ever had is probably 15-20 people, and the most is probably in the hundreds, I dont know the eact numbers though.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? We are between the ages of 17-18 so we draw a generally young crowd of 15 - 25 year olds mainly, as our gigs are usually all ages.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We never have a definite setlist but we decide usually decide beforehand what we will play and go from there.

Do you have a regular place you play live often? We've played here and there locally but we don't have a regular gig at any venue. Mostly due to us having to balance school and music, it gets difficult with tests and all that other bullshit.

What was your first gig like? Our first gig was fun, we played in a Battle of the Bands and we played all covers as we had just started. We just smashed it out, but we got beaten by a band we know pretty well, because they had more people and they had a cheesy thing on stage, but musically it was a great way to check if our sound would work, and for 3 people, there was a fullness and power to our sound that we knew could work well in future.

Where do you plan to gig the coming year? We finish school at the end of this year, so at the end of 2015 and early 2016 we plan to hit up the local scene and possibly travel interstate if we get the chance.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Shit, this is a complex issue. I have a flurry of opinions and still haven't made up my mind yet what I think.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Well in my opinion, and i don't speak for my whole band, but as i see it there are way too many sides to this argument, Firstly, music is an art form, not an industry, so music shouldn't be based on money and corporations and the like. This has now turned music into a money making machine where the only marketable artists who make it famous are  your taylor swifts and justin fucking biers who just pump out shit single after shit single to make money of the musically oblivious masses of people who dont know any better. It means Artists who are amazing guitarists, or vocalists, drummers, keyboardists, bassists and so on who dont get any exposure, and it fucking sucks. However musicians do need to get paid and the music industry creates jobs for people who want to do music but sadly the high up people behind their desks who know nothing of music and see it as a business, i think thats fucked, and downloading music can derail this. Then again, it also ruins the industry for those talented people, like your up and coming rock artists who work their asses off to get to the top only to not get paid for their hard work. Theres really a lot to this issue and to take one side only is being very biased.

What do you think of my work? I think what you've done for yourself and for artists has been amazing, and the name you made for yourself, you deserve to be praised. You evoke a lot of thought and really deliver interesting things and have a nose for talent.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? I see that you have established yourself successfully and i believe that this is one way to better get this band out there, to a wide audience of people who may begin to get into our material.

Do you have any role models or idols? I could write a book on this question. Tom, our drummer is mostly inspired by the Perth psychedelic rock scene surrounding bands such as Tame Impala and POND, and rock bands like Queens of the Stone Age. Tom idolises the creative and innovative rule breaking ideas of Kevin Parker from Tame Impala who seems to be his main idol, and thats why he pushed boundaries when he plays with us, and in his solo projects. TJ has a love for a massive wide vocabulary of music, and looks up to artists from Frank Zappa and The Beatles, to Danzig and Deep Purple, However i don't know of his exact idols and stuff, ill have to ask him. Myself, I love old school metal and Worship Black Sabbath, literally. Bands such as Judas priest, motor head, iron maiden and the british metal scene in general really inspires me. In addition, heavy alternative bands such as ministry and especially filter have recently inspired me. Richard Patrick is my new all time Idol.

Why do you think that they exist? They exist from being innovative, perfecting their craft, and working hard to reach where they did.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Older bands are easier to find inspiration from as new bands also take inspiration from them and often seem to sound the same. Our main hope is to sound like us as much as we can rather than anyone else.

How do you get psyched for a gig? Tom and TJ are very chill before gigs, and i get way too hyped because I'm generally an extremely energetic person. On the day we just generally talk about what we're doing, have a pep talk to get in the zone then we just get out there and play.

Do you have any new material? Well we are currently working on our first EP so we are getting there. Its all very high energy, raw, and very straight forward. Theres no bullshit in what we're doing.

How can people reach you? You can email us at [email protected], or feel free to drop us a message on our Facebook page.

What are your plans for the future? Whatever this brings, we play it as it comes. Hopefully it goes well.

Do you have something to add? Thank you, so much!
