interview with AirLight

What´s the name of your band? We are called AirLight, after a trademark issue this summer, we rebranded from Voyager.

How was the band formed? Erlend and me (Martin) have played together since high school in different projects. After a while we founded this band to be more focused and productive as a duo instead of a band. Giving both of us more room to express ourselves fully. We started out early 2012 and we have played a lot of shows and released new music all along the way.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? We have the same ambition now as we've always had. We are going to be as good and big as we can possibly be!

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? We combine influences from '00's alternative rock scene with modern electronic synthesized productions.

Where was your first gig? A small, shitty pub in downtown Oslo. It was great fun with great friends.

Where was the latest gig? We played an amazing festival in Trondheim, Norway this summer. It was alot of kids there who's never seen us before and we had some new songs we've never played before. It was a very special night and definitely one of the best shows we've ever played.

Who writes your songs?/ who writes the music who writes lyrics? We always write the music together. However, Erlend is the musical genious and Martin writes the lyrics.

Who has the best since of humor in the band? We both have the driest, worst humour ever. We are not funny. At all.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? Our songs is mostly about anxiety for the future, life, love and all the great questions. A lot of portraits of a post apocalyptic world we are headed for faster than ever. Still, there is always a hint of hope. If you only remember to turn on the light.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? We have released two EP's and we have a new one coming very soon! We are releaseing a brand new single these days (Friday, September 19th), which is an amazing remix done by Jake Pitts, from Black Veil Brides. We Can't Come Home is the best we've ever done. It's a game changer for us. So check it out wherever you prefer to listen to music!

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? We have amazing and huge plans for the upcoming year. With the new record in the making we are planning A LOT of shows! So we might just be coming to a venue near you!

Is it always the same songs live? Not at all! We change things up, and we always write new songs and perform them as soon as they're ready! We don't hold anything back. I don't really think we've ever played the excact same set. And all the songs are majorly different live. Since we're a duo, studio work is really different. We have two great friends of us, Jonas and Bjørn Magnus, on stage live on bass and drums and they put their personal touch on the songs, and of course we create live versions of every single song. Always. So they're always more or less different from the recordings and different on different tours.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? We are releasing our new single this friday. That sets the starting point for a long range of amazing things we're going to do this next year. We have tons of new music, more singles, remixes, a new EP and a lot of shows planned! Make sure to sign up to our news letter on our website to get the news first!

How do you get psyched up for a gig? We are always psyched. No matter what. The crowd, the anticipation, the music, the smell, light and sound og a venue. We don't need anything else!

What are your sources of inspiration? People, society and our own minds. We write a lot about the big questions in life. The way the world and humanity evolves (or more like devolves) and the life and lies of friends and loved ones are major inspirations for us.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Our new single which comes out these days is the best we've ever done. I really like what we have and will achieve with this song. Number two must be a song called Crash. It's actually the first song we ever written, and the first song we ever put out, in an acoustic live version on YouTube. It's a great song to play live, and a lot of our fans know the words and sing along and it's just one of the best things we've done.

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? The love for music. And the love for performing. And the thrive to make a change in the world. The part in all of us to do the best we can with what we have – for ourselves and for the world.
