interview with Chaos Trigger

Have any of you played in other bands? I think we have all played in other bands, other than our vocalist. This is the first band he’s ever been in!
How is it that you started playing music? I just started playing music through my father cause he’s always played guitar, and listening to Slipknot on Kerrang made me want to play heavy sh*t!
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? We’re a five piece band, My names Aled I play guitar and I’m 23! Tom plays guitar and he’s 22, Mike the bassist is also 22, Skitty the vocalist (Richard) Is 24 and I think Dan the drummer is 27.. Haha
Have you had other previous members? Yes in The Dweller, I joined in 2014 and we have Simon and Ellis previously on bass… Our good Friend Welly from Chaos Trigger (https://www.facebook.com/chaostrigger?fref=ts) was the original guitarist for the band. I’m sure they had some other members but not entirely sure… All I know is we have the strongest line up now.
Did you make music even when you were young? Yes! Every since I was about 11 years old I’ve always been writing stuff. Since I turned around 15/16 I just played all sorts of metal, it’s always fun!
Where are you from? South Wales, United Kingdom!
What year did the band form? The band originally formed in 2012 I believe, but didn’t start gigging until 2014 because people stay with the band for a few months rehearsing and writing, then quit. But now we’re going strong!
What's your style of genre? To be honest we haven’t really got a said style of genre, but we are quite related to Deathcore and the likes. We just play what we like and what we think is good.
What inspires you? Other local musicians around us, and bigger bands that make us just want to better ourselves as musicians and make the meanest music, and have fun doing it!
How often and where do you reherse? In all honesty we don’t really rehearse a lot… maybe once every 3 weeks for a few hours? We’ve been playing our current set so long we’re just used to it until we start adding our new songs really soon..
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Yes and no… I’ve always welcomed the idea of working with other musicians, but I’m pretty comfortable where I am with this band, and I like what we’re doing and where we are going. So if I did do anything with anyone else, The Dweller would still be my main priority
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We just love gigging, if something comes up for us so we can play around the world that is obviously the dream, but we’re happy playing anywhere to anyone if we can! I think agencies can be great for bands, but they can also not be great! We won’t know until we find out I suppose!
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Not really, if something comes up then that’s cool but we wouldn’t just dive at the chance of a label. We’ve seen and know people who have done that and regretted it! I like labels and being on one would be cool, but it’s not our goal right now.
What made you decide to make this music? Just the love the band and myself have for it, there is something extremely special about being on stage and playing songs you’ve written to people and having a good time.. you can’t beat it!
What are your songs about? Haha…. Normally about 40K and warhammer and what not (Skitty is well into that stuff) but our latest track is called “Pessimist” and we’re in the process of recording it now, and Pessimist is basically expecting the worst out of everything, it’s a bit darker.. all our new stuff is dark.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? We share the load equally. We bounce riffs back and forth to each other and we all put in as much as we can to develop our songs. We don’t go by “I write this song I want credit” everything is a band effort and we all put the same work into it!
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Both, sometimes we write lyrics and they fit or they inspire the song writing, or we write something and lyric ideas constantly pop up so we play with them to get them fit!
Do you compose in a certain environment? Well the boys do it from home, just write and chill out! I do it in my studio when it’s not in use and play along and just…write!
Have you done any covers live? Yeah we’ve played Suicide Silence – Unanswered a few times, we absolutely love what Suicide Silence put out, always bangers!
What language do you sing in? English. Even though we’re Welsh, none of us can actually speak Welsh!
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? Most, I wouldn’t be able to say because the gigs recently seem to be getting more packed out! But the least would be when we played a show in Neath (The Duke) and we had 3 people watching us….. and two was a band and one was a one man band… And the bar staff. Still played though!
What ages are most of your concert attendants? It’s a mixed age, it depends at the moment cause we’re not a massive band at all or anything, we’re just a small local band slowly building up a reputation!
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? For the most part we do, we just change the order of our set to keep thing interesting!
Do you have a regular place you play live often? Yes haha most of the time we’re almost always playing Merthyr or Cardiff (South Wales)! We love it though!
What was your first gig like? Insane! We had a small pit and a small wall of death, we only played 4 songs because we thought we’d wing it! One of our favourite gigs!
What was your latest gig? We played two shows on the weekend and both were amazing! It picked us back up after the absolutely terrible performance we had previously in Neath. (it happens to us all though)
Have you had to cancel a gig? Yeah we have had to cancel one or two in the past… We don’t get paid for shows because 8/10 promoters just won’t pay bands, we got to slow down and stop playing shows as much because we generally cannot afford to play all the gigs we got. We got some really cool stuff coming up soon so hopefully that’ll change.
Where have you played live this year? All over where we live, we’re trying to expand and get out of our country a bit now and spread our name about!
Where do you plan to gig the coming year? We’re hoping to do some in England and Scotland, we would most definitely welcome some European dates haha!
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We had a pile of T-shirts on order, we only received 20 out of 50 thought because the T-shirt company from Kent known as Corvus completely f**cked us and done a runner with our money!
Where can people buy your merchandise? We’ll have a big cartel online soon for when we get new merch!
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? Man, it just can’t be avoided. It’s an absolute shame that no one buys music anymore, but we already know we won’t ever actually sell any cause no one buys music now…. Even if we just get our stuff downloaded so people can listen to us that’s cool.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Well it’s changed massively, labels are only going to suffer and they can’t afford to put our or pay for other bands to join the label or anything, too much to go into realistically but it’s pretty shitty!
What do you think of my work? No idea, I don’t think it can be avoided really as of yet… if someone comes up with a good idea, let us know!
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Both, no matter the size difference I’ve seen bands that are incredible and they’re not big. Our good friends from All To Ruin are absolutely outstanding and they deserve to be touring and known around the world, but they aren’t! But they’re still inspiring!
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Just go for it and have fun, don’t worry about money too much and don’t stress out! Just get some of your best mates together to start a band, write some music, constantly abuse eachother via banter (cheeky nandos) and go meet some of the best people you’ll ever meet in your life. Made some life long friends through music!
How do you get psyched for a gig? We listen to King 810 and loads of other heavy shit to get us ready, then we watch the bands and we just get ready off the energy of other bands!
Do you have any new material? Yes! We have a stupid amount of songs to choose from. We sort have narrowed it down from 22 songs to 5 now, and we’re still probably gonna add and write more songs anyway so it’s never ending!
