interview with Cernunnos

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, we have. In fact, most of us play in more than 2 bands (Unreal, Frater, Lord Kraven, Daemon Lost, for example).

How is it that you started playing music? Well, most of us played since we are children, about 11-12 years old by our own and/or with family.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Martín Noé: Vocals, Pablo Schivo: Bass & Backing Vocals, Hernán Barbieri: Guitars, Joaquín Gomez. Guitars, Ezequiel Remus: Drums, Juan Diego Muñoz: Violin & Backing Vocals. We have between 21 and 30 years old.

Have you had other previous members? Yes, we have. Daniela Prina: Flute & Whistle, Federico Initello: Guitars, Florencia Germano: Whistle & Bagpipes, Fernando Romeo Ortiz: Drums.

Did you make music even when you were young? Yes, of course! We’ve always made music.

Where are you from? We are from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

What year did the band form? Cernunnos was formed in June 2012.

What's your style of genre? Folk Metal.

What inspires you? Well… it’s a little bit hard to think about it. When it comes to music, we have some “exponents”  such as Eluveitie, Turisas, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, Wintersun, etc etc etc. Regarding lyrics, we really like Celtic culture and such.

How often and where do you reherse? We usually rehearse at our rehearsal room on Sundays.

How have you developed since you started with the music? We’ve met to start a Folk Metal project with particular influences, but we’ve passed through many changes and the band took a different and wider way. Now, we take influences from  many styles and we’re proud of it, because we want to build a new and original sound.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Yes we have. Some of us work in I.T., Administration and stuff.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Not yet, we are focused on other things at the moment.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We are open to opportunities. We are recording our first album and we hope we find a label that supports us.

What made you decide to make this music? Culture, history and Folk instruments mixed with metal.

What are your songs about? Our songs are about battles, particular Celtic gods and warriors, life cycle. Also we have a song called “Mother Earth” which talks about  Enviromental abuse.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? In most of the cases, me (Pablo) and some musical arrangements are made by Joaquín and Hernán.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? I don’t have a method; it depends on what’s the first thing that comes to my mind, whether it’s some lyrics, or a riff, melody, etc.

Do you compose in a certain enviroment? No, I don’t. Mainly, I always record the riffs or melodies that come to my mind on my cellphone and then i reorganize those ideas.

Have you done any covers live? Yes we have, such as Inis Mona (Eluveitie), Beer Beer (Korpiklaani) and many more.

What language do you sing in? English, for now.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? There’s a mix of young and old people.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We’re playing mostly the same setlist until we finish recording our first album (in most of cases, 6 or 7 songs).

Do you have a regular place you play live often? Yes, Zadar Club, in Wilde, just outside Buenos Aires.

What was your first gig like? A nervous one, I think. It was at the Wagner Fest I with other friend bands.

What was your latest gig? It was at the opening act for Eluveitie last month, here in Buenos Aires.

Have you had to cancel a gig? No, luckily, we haven’t yet.

Where have you played live this year? We played at Wagner Fest III, Silence of Rock, with Eluveitie, and many more.

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? It will mostly depend on which gigs the producers would be able to organize, but we’d like to visit other provinces of Argentina.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? Actually, the only merchandise we have are t-shirts ‘till we have our first album out.

Where can people buy your merchandise? At the moment, we do not have merchandise to sell but t-shirts, and they can contact us through [email protected] or http://www.facebook.com/CernunnosArg.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays?  Actually, we have to admit that Internet is the most powerful tool for spreading music, but some of us still want to buy physical albums because we like artworks and to see how the bands present themselves.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? It was a good change; thousands of bands did find their place in the world because of that.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? It’s good to have people that want to know who you are and what you can offer to the music business. So, we appreciate your interest and time.

Do you have any role models or idols? We’d say that Chrigel Glanzmann is our principal “idol” (I’d rather call him an influence), because he never gave up about his thoughts and ideas of what he wanted to create and how to make it so (about Eluveitie).

Why do you think that they exist? We think that role models exist because we find them faithful to our own principles.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? It’s more easier when you listen all the music you can. Our advice is not to restrict oneself to listen to just one or two styles. Music is huge and made to be listened.

What have been your biggest obstacles? We think our biggest obstacles at the time were to find the right musicians. It’s important to have the proper chemistry with all members to give a perfect show.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Stay together, don’t get angry at little things, practice a lot (which means one rehearsal per week at least), have variety of songs in your setlist, always have a beer on stage. (just kiddin’… well no).

How do you get psyched for a gig? In our case, we like to stay quiet and get warm to avoid mistakes when playing, you know.

Do you have any new material?  Yes, we do. We expect that our first studio album will be out in December 2015, but this weekend we’re going to introduce a new song called “The battle of Moytirra”, a song about the 2nd war of the Tuatha De D’anann’s in Ireland against Fomore.

What are your web sites? www.facebook.com/CernunnosArg / www.soundcloud.com/CernunnosArg

How can people reach you? Through e-mail ([email protected]) or through our Facebook Fanpage www.facebook.com/CernunnosArg.

What are your plans for the future? To finish our first studio album, make new songs and folk it on.

Do you have something to add? Thank you very much for your interest and time. Hope to meet you soon in some gig! Bests.
