interview with Not For Saints

Personal questions about the band and their members:
Have you played in any band before?
Sure! Max: The Will To Survive; Micha P.: Gang Frowzy; Achim: Surf Dogs; Micha K.: Stormwitch

What's your name? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Achim: Guitar; Micha K.: Drums; Micha P.: Clean Vocals/ Bass; Max: Screams/Guitar

Have you had previous members? No.

Did you do music already when you were small? Of course, we „played“ guitar on a tennis racket or drums on kitchen stuff, things like that.

Where are you from? Near Stuttgart in the southwest of Germany

What year was started the band? Officially in 1998, but reborn in 2015

What do you play music style? We don't want to determine the style of music we make, but it's a mixture between different genres like Nu-Metal, Metalcore, Post-Grunge with influences of kind of metal.

What inspires you? Bands like Alter Bridge, Enter Shikari, Killswitsch Engage,...

Do you use earplugs when you appear? No, we don't use earplugs.

How have you evolved since you started with music? Started with 80's metal back in 1998 we constantly evolving. We have some progessive parts as well as Metalcore-ish parts.

Do you have any other interests or jobs outside of the band and the music? Unfortunately, yes. Everyone of us has a fulltime job beside the band, except for Micha K., who does music for a living.

Are you looking for the booking company, what are your thoughts and requirements around it then? Booking companies are cool, they do nearly all the work for you. We didn't find a fitting agency yet, but we are looking for one, that finds cool gigs with nice Bands, that fit our style of music.

Are you looking for record labels, what are your thoughts and requirements around it then? A record label should support us in a financial way, as well as in supporting us during the recording process in the studio. Oh, and they should make great publicity. E.g. pushing our apprearance in the scene and so on.

Questions about your music and lyrics:
How will that you do music? If we have new ideas, we record them at home or in our rehearsal room, and send them to the other members. That way everyone can say if they like it or not, or what they would change.

What are your songs about the whole? Daily stuff, broken hearts or lovesickness, fantasy stuff.

Who writes the lyrics? Max and Micha P.

Who does the music? Max and Achim

When you do a song, you start with the music or the lyrics? We always start with the music, and then find the fitting lyrics. The other way round is a bit more complicated, because if the music doesn't fit then, you have to change the lyrics or the music again and that sucks.

In which environment do you usually do your songs? Usually at home, but sometimes we have some new ideas during rehearsing.

Do you play only original songs live and also covers? By now we only have original songs, maybe there will be some covers in the future, we don't know.

What language are you singing about? Our lyrics are all in english.

Questions about your views:
What do you think about downloading more music than buying CDs nowadays? It´s kinda cool, because you have it all at one place, and don't have to worry about stuff like scratched CD's or losing them etc.

How to think and do you think the music industry has changed since they started downloading music? It surely has changed: the bands, labels, sales of music. Bands don't have to press expensive CD's and covers anymore (that's nice), so they put their music online.

If you prefer downloaded music, cassette, CD or Vinyl? Well, everythings nice you know? Downloaded music on your phone/MP3-Player, CD's for your car and Vinyl at home.

What would you do if the music is not the fans? There are always people that celebrate your music. And if not there will always be other people. Best example is the band „Bring Me The Horizon“: back in the days they did really nice Deathcore and nowadays they make rather „mainstream“ music. Maybe the old fans don't like their new stuff, but new fans came that like their new style.

What about the guards' job at your gigs and stuff? Never had problems with the guards. They always did a good job.

Those attending light and sound how much they have helped you really if you think about? Everywhere it's different. Sometimes the sound-technician fucks up, sometimes they do an amazing job. Same goes for the light-technician.

What do you think of my work? It's very interesting because of the diversity of music styles you did interviews with.

What are your role models or idols? Matt K. Heafy Trivium), David Coverdale (Whitesnake), Travis Barker (Blink 182), Yngwie Malmsteen

What do you think they are age limits on some concerts?
Maybe because of the brutality in some shows or a vulgar display (just search for „Rammstein Bück Dich Live“ on YouTube and you will know what we mean).

Is it easier to draw inspiration from older bands than bands that are active today? Both actually. Like we said, we mix so many styles of metal, and we get inspiration from both older an newer music.

What has been conditioned biggest obstacles in the music industry? These das there are so many small underground/newcomer bands out there, that it is nearly impossible to get recognizes by a label or even get famous to live from the music we make.

What advice would you give to other bands and artists? Never give up on your dreams, you have to make youself a name and differ from the others. You can do it if you really want to.

How tags you up before a concert? Drink beer, relax a bit, warm up, listen to music.
