interview with TRAITOR

Have any of you played in other bands? Matze (guitar) played in a band called „Unexpected“. Andi (Drums, Vocals) used to play in a Death Metal band called „Bowtome“ and in a Thrash Metal band called „Dark Assault“. I  played in a punk and funk band before I joined „Traitor“. But all of the guys were busy making music before.

How is it that you started playing music? I think I was 13 years old, sth. like that. My brother used to play guitar and bassguitar so I just tried it myself and yeah... that's it basically.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? My name is Lorenz Kandolf (24) and I'm the bass player. Gerd Hery (28), he's one of the guitar players. Matze Koch (29) is the other guitar  player and Andreas Mozer (28) is the drummer and singer.

Have you had other previous members? Yeah we had some changes. But right now we're in this constellation and I hope we're keeping it!

Did you make music even when you were young? Yes, but not so serious and different instruments.

Where are you from? We're from Germany. From a town called Balingen.

What year did the band form? Andi and Gerd started in 2004 playing music together. But Traitor was formed in 2009.

What's your style of genre? We're playing Thrash Metal.

What inspires you? Sometimes Movies, historical and current events or personal stuff.

How often and where do you reherse? Basically once a week but if we have a lot of shows or we're touring we're rehearsing more before it starts. Our rehearsing room is in Balingen, our hometown.

How have you developed since you started with the music? I don't know we're always trying to come up with something new because we don't want to copy and redoing it. But just listen to our latest work “Thrash Command” and “Venomizer” so maybe you can hear the progress.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? We all have day jobs, hahaha.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? A booking agency is great because they're dealing with all the booking and stuff around it. But sometimes you have to deal with black sheeps there too. So it's going up and down. So maybe they fuck you up and you realize it when it's to late. You're always have to take some risks.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We've got a label. It's called “Violent Creek Records” and we're very happy with them. They're doing a great job and you've got more opportunities. So it's great to have a label. But you always can do a lot on your own. It depends what you want to achieve.

What made you decide to make this music? The power, the speed... I don't know it's just the music we all like.

What are your songs about? As I already said it's about current and historical events, personal stuff, sometimes about movies. We don't have something like a fix topic.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Andi (drums, vocals) writes the lyrics. We are composing every song together and everybody brings something to the table so it's pretty organic.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Always with the music.

Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Well we do it in our rehearsal room or at home. I mean where it hits you you're trying to put it down and keep it in your mind. Sometimes while driving and there is a riff in your head and you're singing it in your mobile to remember it.

Have you done any covers live? Yeah, we covered stuff from Slayer, The Ramones, Sepultura, Metallica or Roxette.

What language do you sing in? English, German and French. But basically in English. We use different languages for bonus tracks. It's a lot of fun.

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? The least maybe 30. The most 1000-2000 people.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We vary, because we always try to give the audience a new show.

Do you have a regular place you play live often? There are some venues we've played more then once. But not in particular one.

What was your first gig like? Like ever? I don't know maybe with the age of 7 at a cityparty. But with Traitor 2009 at a motorcycle club.

What was your latest gig? Our latest gig was at the lake of constance, this one was radical!!! Great fun!

Have you had to cancel a gig? Yeah we had to. Because of shitty organization or we had to work. So it happens but not so often.

Where have you played live this year? Austria, Switzerland and all over Germany.

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? It's gonna be all over Europe.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? When we started the band. We've got shirts, patches, caps, Cds, Lps, posters and many more.

Where can people buy your merchandise? At our shows or in your local cd shop. You can download the music or order it from our website www.traitor-band.de

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Well you can download it illegal or via Itunes, amazon and all that stuff. But personally I would prefer to buy a cd because you've got something in your hand like physically. But illegal downloads are bad for every band especially for little bands.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? I mean it's a business. They will follow what ever it takes to get profit. This is how business works. So they're more focusing on downloads and mp3.

What do you think of my work? You're doing a great job. You've got a wide field of bands, I like it.

Do you have any role models or idols? There are a lot of influences. I really like “Jaco Pastorius”, BB King, David Bowie and Cliff Burton.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? I don't know there are so many many bands or different styles of music. They're all inspiring.

What have been your biggest obstacles? To find a label and get the attention of a bigger audience.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Play you're fucking ass of. Try to play as good as possible on every single show! Be nice to the people and don't act like a fool and stay on the ground.

How do you get psyched for a gig? We're fist bumping for every show hahaha.

Do you have any new material? Yeah our latest album is called “Venomizer”. We're writing new songs for the third album right now.

What are your web sites?www.traitor-band.de or Facebook just type “Traitor” and search for us!

How can people reach you? Facebook and our website

What are your plans for the future? A new album and touring.
