interview with Silent Moriah

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, we started to explore the music world when we were very young and irresponsable teenagers, during middle school! Every one of us has had previous other bands, but when we were kids, we just played covers. Although we soon started to compose our first dogshit songs.

How is it that you started playing music? Every one of us has a different approach to music, but we started (around middle school time, as we told) because we listened to a lot of different types and genres of music, and we just tried to do something by ourselves. When you are a kid and you heard a song that gives you chills, you just want to replicate those melodies and rhythm with a guitar or whatever you have. Our older brothers and parents listen to a lot of music more than watching TV, and we guess this surely helped us.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?

Yes, right! Introduction before everything! We are:

Leo, 22, singer, Renny, 21, guitarist, Torkus, 20, guitarist and Anzo, 22, bass player!

Have you had other previous members? Yes, we had another guitarist, Intro, and a drummer, Sam. They left soon after our first demo, and after some months Torkus joined us. We are still searching a regular drummer! If you know some kickass swedish drummer who want to join us in Italy, we will be the happiest guys on earth, hahaha!

Did you make music even when you were young? No, but as we told, we listened a lot of music, maybe Renny, he started some guitar lesson with his brother as teacher when he was 7, but nothing serious. Just during Middle School we started to play.

Where are you from? We are from Bolzano, it is a little city among the Alps in North-East Italy. Just forests, mountains, valleys and assholes like us.

What year did the band form? We formed in June 2012, at the beginning by Renny and the ex-drummer Sam, exactly a week later joined Leo, then we find Anzo. The fresh and kickass new entry is Torkus. “Black Sun” has been our first song and single, now we are changing a bit sound and way of playing, but we are still affectioned to that song. At that time the name of the band was only “Moriah”, with the line-up change we modified it in “Silent Moriah”.

What's your style of genre? That’s a difficult question. As any other band, famous or totally unknown (like us, haha), we don’t like to classify our music. Not because we feel extremely original and “never heard” sounding, but simply because tomorrow we can feel free to change things and write totally different songs, and for us it’s important. Music is a continous development. But besides this “Bohèmenic” bullshit, we play Metal. Some friends and fans described us as Thrashy/doomy inspired, but the main genre of Metal we play, we guess is Death Metal. We don’t care to much about it honestly.

What inspires you? A lot of different things, from the morning wind till the bread with cheese at dinner! When we started, we listen to bands like Pantera and Black Sabbath, they inevitable inspired us as thousands and more other bands. But taken one by one we have really a wide range of favourite artists, from the sludge of EyeHateGod to a “Corelli” composition as well as the Blues of Robben Ford or some crazy Robert Frip tune, passing through some Slipknot or After The Burial groove. That’s just to tell some few names. Contaminating our musical tastes with many artists and music as possible, is a good thing for our creativity.

How often and where do you rehearse? Now we rehearse, more or less, one time pro-month, we are very busy, because someone of us study at University in an other city, and someone have a Job. We record at home song sketches or use some music Software to write stuffs, and we send among us the ideas, and if something works, we find in the rehearsal room to try them out. We need to be very organized, but till now, it has worked quiet well. We rehearse in a music room under a theater in our city.

How have you developed since you started with the music? We are still developing ourselves, every day you learn something new, we have started to better define our style, and to care a lot about song structure, Harmonies, rhythm, and every kind of details a song needs. We are always unsatisfied, it’s a neverending journey! But we are a compact team, sometimes it’s difficult to find the right balance and compromise between us, but it’s challenging and we like it.

Do you have other interests or work outside the band? Of course, although we would like to be full time musicians, we have other interests and dedications, we can still not afford to live with music, and nowadays it’s very difficult. Leo has a Job, and Torkus too. Renny studies Agriculture Technology at University and Anzo studies Art at The School Of Fine Arts, in the city of Bologna. Anzo is the Artworks creator and designer of the band. All graphics/logo/Flyers you can  find on our Social Networks pages and profiles, are made by him, he is doing a great job.  Check out his FaceBook Page “InchiostroLisergico”, maybe you can find something interesting! Other things we like it’s ski, fishing, reading books and watching horror splatter movie, we love them.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? At the moment, a friend of us is the manager of “The Krampus MGMT retailing” and he has organized nice concerts where we and other local bands were involved, we got the chance to play with bands like “Hexis”, “CHRCH” and “Behold!TheMonolith”. We are also involved in the “South Tyrolean Metal Alliance” a newborn booking agency. We help each other out, trying to create a good underground scene in our city. But yes, we are searching a new booking agency especially for touring abroad.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that?  We have ever been independent and every thing is organized and fund by ourselves. But since a couple of months  we are looking for some “small” label, for a promoting service or other stuffs. It would be grate. Nowadays, with social networks, you can easily spread your music to the public, but we still believe that a right label would help us anyway. A co-production, more contacts for concerts and more promoting ways, everything well organized, can make the difference. A band is not only about palying music. Certainly you should practice your instrument every day, but you have also to be a manager. Working hard in order to organize tour, concerts, recordings and promotions, is also an essential side of a band, especially for an emerging one.

What are your songs about? Generally we have a spontaneous feeling for sad and dramatic lyrics and topics. We don’t like to write songs about happy stories. That does not mean that we are depressed or sad guys, nothing about that honestly. We simply “exorcise” difficulties or bad things that sometimes happen through our music. It is a good way to let anger and sadness escape, you convert those feelings in creativity. Someone I do not remember said : “I write sad stuff because when I’m happy I go out with friends”. That explains perfectly what we mean. For our last work “Wise Murder & Natural Evil” there is a different concept about what songs are about. Every song is inspired by a sick and famous Serial Killer. We read interviews and books about the killers in order to analyze the phsycological aspects, instead of the violent ones. It is not a concept album, but there is a main topic that links all the songs together. The personalities and the perception of reality of those killers are often match with feelings of anger, lonliness and melancholy, emotions we want to express through this EP.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? We have not a real rule for that, usually Leo writes all the Lyrics, but also Renny sometimes has written the words for some song. About the composing, we start from a guitar line, a riff or a drum pattern and then we try to develop the idea all together. The main composers are Leo and Renny, but we all develop a song together.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Always with the music, for the moment it comes more natural for us, but we never forget, while composing, how a possible vocal line could sound on it.

Have you had to cancel a gig? Yes sometimes happens, because of job permissions or Exams problems, as we told, somewhere above, we have to be very organized, but hopefully we haven’t cancelled too many gigs. Just 2 or 3.

Where have you played live this year? We mainly played in Italy. Especially in our city or in the northern part of Italy. We are trying to extend our frontiers, we would like to play in some north European country like Germany, Denmark or Sweden, it would be really great.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? Nice question! We always liked bands T-shirt and when we had some ideas we started to print ours.  The first series of T-shirts has been done by ourselves, because of Anzo. We have four different type of T-Shirts, some brand new patches and our last CD “Wise Murders and Natural Evil”. In this days we are going to update all our merchandise on our BandCamp profile, so the public can buy it. Of course at every concert we have our merch stage.

Where can people buy your merchandise? You can visit our “Merch” in our BandCamp profile, we hope you like it!

What do you think of my work? We thank you for that, without people like you, that gives space to underground bands, all efforts made by young musicians and bands as well as artists in general, vanish. Thank you for your interest.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Oh, you give us the chance to speak with you and more other readers, so it’s surely a good thing for us, we are happy about this interview, maybe we can get some die hard fan thanks to this interview, we hope that, haha!

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today?  Everything is helpful, we listen to a wide range of musical genres, and it is important not to listen only metal, if you take an idea from

Do you have any new material? For sure! Our first EP “Wise Murders & Natural Evil” has recently been released, and we are going on writing new stuff, but we have to work still a lot on it, by the way we are very excited about our new songs and the whole EP.

What are your web sites? We have our Facebook (Don’t forget to put some like, haha), Instagram, YouTube and BandCamp account! We haven’t a personal band site yet! We think we will do one soon!

How can people reach you? Through the SocialAccounts or with our mail address [email protected]!

What are your plans for the future? We will continue to do our best in organizing gigs and in our songwriting process in orderd to release some other shit very soon, so stay tuned!

Do you have something to add? We want to thank you again for your support and for your interest, and big fucking greetings to all your readers! S|M wish you the best!
