How is it that you started playing music? Everybody started playing too young, because music is our essence.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?

The band is formed by:

Diego Nogueira – vocals – from 1983;

Eduardo “Topperman” Scarellis – guitar – from 1965;

Mauricio Amaral – guitar – from 1973;

Pardal Chimello – bass – from 1965;

Evandro Jr – drum – from 1965.

Have you had other previous members? Yes, we had. The first formation had Henrique Poço vocal, José Aranha guitar and Chrstian guitar. On 90´s Renata Higa was the vocal and on 2004 to 2008 Frank Gasparotto was on vocals.

Did you make music even when you were young? Yes, as we said on the question above, we started playing too young.

Where are you from? All of us are from São Paulo, the biggest city of Brasil.

What year did the band form? The band is one of oldest Brazilian band. Anthares was formed in 1985.

What's your style of genre? We play Thrash Metal.

What inspires you? Slayer and Exodus are our main influence.

How often and where do you reherse? It depends on the shows, we intensify reherses next to the shows or when we are creating new songs.

How have you developed since you started with the music? Yes, we have always been developed.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Unfortunately yes. All of us have regular jobs to pay the bills. We don´t earn enough money with music.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We have already have a booking agency, it´s called Cronos Entertainment and we think it´s very important to have a booking agency, because it´s a good opportunity to do better shows.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We have already have a label, it´s called Multilation Records and our last album was released by them. The idea is similar to the previous question, a label is very important to a band, because they release the albuns.

What made you decide to make this music? I think we didn´t decide, it was very natural. In the beginning, the songs were slower, but when Pardal entered in the band in 1985, he suggested to play faster and all of the old members enjoyed the idea.

What are your songs about? Social alienation in all its diversity, human mind disorders, social violence, chaos, world wars, nuclear annihilation have always been part of the lyrics since its conception.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Most of the lyrics are written by Evandro Junior , but Mauricio Amaral helps a little bit and sometimes the ex-singer, Henrique Poço, send us some lyrics. The songs are composed by all of us, Topperman, Mauricio and Pardal create the riffs and we create the songs all of us together.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? We start with the music and after we put the lyrics. Sometimes we create the lyrics based on the songs and sometimes we made some adjustments on the lyrics to fit on the song.

Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Topperman, Mauricio and Pardal create the riffs in their own house and share with the others. We frequently meet in someone´s house to create the main ideas of the new songs and, after that, we finish the song in a rehearsal.

Have you done any covers live? In the 80´s it was common we played Exodus and SOD, in the 90´s, Pantera and Sacred Reich, but in the last years we haven´t played covers. When we recorded a version of Ratos de Porão´s song, we played sometimes live the song called Plano Furado, but nowadays we play only our songs.

What language do you sing in? We sing in Portuguese, but in the 90´s, specially in 1993 e 1995 we recorded two demo-tapes in English. Our first album, No Limite da Força (1987) e the last one, O Caos da Razão (2015) are sang in English.

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We are not sure, but maybe the least it was around 15 people, we had many bad situations and the biggest gig probably had about 3000 people in a very big festival in Brasilia.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? It varies a lot. We can see mature headbangers with more than 40 ou 50 years old, but it´s possible to notice that there is a renovation of the public and there are lots of young headbangers, many of them are less than 18 years old.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? Our set list has been changing in the course of time. Some years ago we used to play more the songs of the first album. Now we divide between the first and the second albuns and as soon as we release a new album, we will change our set list again.

Do you have a regular place you play live often? No. The places we play varies a lot. We like to travel to show the band in different cities. As we are from São Paulo, most of our shows was in this city that is our home, where it´s easier to arrange the shows.

What was your first gig like? To tell you the truth we don´t remember very well, because it was many years ago.

What was your latest gig? Our last gig was in December of 2016 on a very big festival (Maniacs Metal Meeting) in a city called Rio Negrinho, about 600 quilometers from our city. Besides Anthares, there was many important Brazilian bands like: Krisiun, Ratos de Porão, Violator, Hibria.

Have you had to cancel a gig? Unfortunately yes. When it happens, it´s a very owkward situation, but, at least, everytime it happened it wasn´t our fault.

Where have you played live this year? We are just in the beginning of this year, so we haven´t played yet, but we are organizing some shows. Last year we played sometimes in our city São Paulo and twice in Santa Catarina, a state next to ours.

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? This year we intend to play the maximum we can, because the first album is completing 30 years, so it´s a very special year for us and we want to celebrate.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We have always sold our merchandise. We have 2 albuns, the first one (No Limite da Força) and the second (O Caos da Razão) and 3 kinds of tshirts in all sizes.

Where can people buy your merchandise? We sell it on shows and by postmail. People get in touch by Internet and after the payment we send by mail.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? We react naturally. The world changes and this situation is normal. We have lots of bands to listen, lot of new band to know and the Internet is a great opportunity to know new albums and new bands, but we expect people don´t stop buying CDs, because it´s the way the fans can help the bands.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? The music industry has changed a lot and the bands have been suffering because of this. CDs aren´t good business anymore, so the company doesn´t invest in CDs, they had to find another ways to earn money and they had to invest in digital media.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? We think it will be an excellent opportunity to more people to know our songs and a little bit more about Brazilian metal scene.

Do you have any role models or idols? Yes, we like a lot the most important bands of the world, like Slayer, Metallica, Exodus. Testament, Megadeth, Anthrax and lots of others.

Why do you think that they exist? We think they exist to play metal and they had the goal to create the new musical style: Thrash Metal.
