interview with Flying Joes
Have any of you played in other bands? Yes we all played with other bands
How is it that you started playing music? When i was a kid, Syd was my neighbor, we know eacthother since we were 4 years old. And it was our dream to play music and that was because of Kiss
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Yves Côté drummer 48 years old, Syd Bédard bass and lead vocal 48 years old and Jean-François Arsenault lead guitar and back vocals 46 years old
Have you had other previous members? In Flying Joes they had a lot of drummers, i’m the 8 one
Did you make music even when you were young? We all start Learning music at 11 years old approximately
Where are you from? We are from Montréal, Québec, Canada
What year did the band form? Flying Joes was formed in 2014 and they release there first album in september 2015
What's your style of genre? Old school rock, some UK magasine said that it sound like old ZZTop, Lynird Skynird and Led Zeppelin
What inspires you? Old rock and blues mostly, but we listen to a lot of different music
How often and where do you reherse? We play each week and reherse every 2 weeks
How have you developed since you started with the music? Music help a lot with the emotions, so more you practice, more good you become
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? I’m the only one who has a day job, my 2 partners only live with music. As for myself i love to read and ride bycicle
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We are looking for one, but the industry change so much, it’s very hard to find one, they want fast success and fast cash earning. They don’t give a lot of chance to bands unfortunately
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We manage our own label but still looking for one. With internet now it is very hard to sell albums so we try to ajust to the new reality of the music industry
What made you decide to make this music? It was the thing that makes me feel that it’s the best part of me i’m showing
What are your songs about? Love, life, politics and fun
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Syd and J-F does all the composing, but the lirics are from Syd
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? I would say that more than 90% of the composing starts with the music.
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? The guys have mini studios at home so they compose at there place
Have you done any covers live? Oh yes, a lot and we still do some for certain bars and private party’s
What language do you sing in? In english
What ages are most of your concert attendants? I would say between 30 and 50 years old, but we still make younger fans( between 16 and 30 years old), that i think is very cool
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We vary, we all know a lots of songs
Do you have a regular place you play live often? There is 2 or 3 place that we go often but we play everywhere they want us
What was your first gig like? Oh my god i was so nervous at my first gig that i don’t remember much of it
What was your latest gig? We -played last week end in a casino
Have you had to cancel a gig? No, fortunately we never had to cancel a gig
Where have you played live this year? We play live every week end
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? At lot of small places with other local bands, to help eachother a bit and we will play in a lot of festivals too. ( we have Flying Joes but we also have a tribute to CCR that goes very well)
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We start to sell merch since the album was release, we sell albums, t_shirt, ear rings, necklaces
Where can people buy your merchandise? At every show they can buy stuff but they can have it too on the Flying Joes web page. Flying Joes .com
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? It is kiling the industry, musician don’t make that money anymore so a lot of band won’t have the Financial to continue
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Well, like governements, the industry keep the cash and is not much for the musucian after that unfortunately
What do you think of my work? I love to see that people like you still love music, musician and in a way blogs like yours surely hael bands, that is very cool
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Well , we never know who will read it so it cannot be a bad thing
Do you have any role models or idols? For myself i would say that Jonh Bonham and Ian Paice are my favorite drummers and influence me a lot
Why do you think that they exist? Because the past industry was taking risk with bands, good for us because i think the today industry will have never sign any led zeppelin of this world. All these old bands create incredible music, all in a different ways, so that is why i think tehy have bring so much to the music
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Oh yes, today’s music that is impose by the radio’s to the people is not vey good it is just a money issue, but old band were more creative
What have been your biggest obstacles? Try to make our place in a money industry that does not put music first
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Play because you like to play, do your best and build your road and have fun to do it even it is very tough to have a career
Do you have any new material? Yes, we have everything for a second album, that we whould like to release in spring 2018
