interview with Set Sail to March

Have any of you played in other bands? We've all played in other bands at one point or another, in fact that's how Dillon (Loucks, guitarist) and I met! I'm currently in another band called "Blindside Avenue" as well.

How is it that you started playing music? We all fell in love with music in our adolescent years, discovering bands like Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Rush, Linkin Park, among others. We're all self-taught musicians as well, so we kinda just figured it out on our own and started making music together!

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?

Kody Archer, Vocalist, 21

Dillon Loucks, Guitar, 19

Tyler Phillips, Guitar, 24

Matthew Cudd, Bass, 23

JD Walker, Drums, 21
Have you had other previous members? A few!

Did you make music even when you were young? Absolutely, we've all been noodling around on our respective instruments from a young age

Where are you from? We're from Medina, Ohio, in the United States. Just outside of Cleveland!

What year did the band form? We formed on June 26, 2015

What's your style of genre? Metalcore, shifting towards progressive metalcore

What inspires you? We all have our family and friends that keep us going everyday, as well as music driving our passion.

How often and where do you reherse? We all have different rehearsal schedules on our own time, but try to get together at least once a week. Kody and I live together, and our basement is the practice space.

How have you developed since you started with the music? We've deffinitely become better songwriters over time, as well as honing our musical chops.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Absolutely! Three of the guys are coding nerds, I'm a hardcore music nerd in general.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We've considered it, but I don't feel like I can answer this question for the whole band.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Again, we've considered it! We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

What made you decide to make this music? It's just what happens when we all get together and jam! I love our music

What are your songs about? Our EP "Leave This Behind" follows the story of "Red Shirt Guy", and the turbulent time in his life that caused DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder), spawning a malignant and incredibly intelligent second personality. We'll chronicle the destruction that his dissociated personality brings about in our upcoming full-length album, "The Arsonist".

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Dillon and I do a majority of the musical composing, and Kody writes a majority of the lyrics (we're co-lyricists for the upcoming record).

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Many times Kody has lyrics that fit something that Dillon has written, but both are adjusted to fit with eachother.

Do you compose in a certain environment? Always in a relaxed environment, never forced!

Have you done any covers live? Absolutely! We've been doing Second & Sebring by Of Mice & Men lately, we've also done OG Loko by them and a few Asking Alexandria songs.

What language do you sing in? English!

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? My dad attends a ton of our shows (thanks pops!), and we have our friends and significant others that support us!

What ages are most of your concert attendants? 16-25

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We've got a solid setlist of old and new songs, but change up the order often

Do you have a regular place you play live often? The Foundry in Lakewood, The Agora Ballroom/Theatre in Cleveland, The Outpost in Kent

What was your latest gig? A lot of fun, it went swimmingly!

Have you had to cancel a gig? We have, but try to avoid it as much as possible.

Where have you played live this year? Mostly in our area (NE Ohio), we're trying to branch out. We've played in Youngstown, and want to play surrounding markets (Columbus, Pittsburgh, etc)

Where do you plan to gig the coming year? Everywhere we can!

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We got shirts over a year ago, and we have it for sale at every show. We'll also have them for sale on our Bandcamp very soon!

Where can people buy your merchandise? At a show or Bandcamp!

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Support the artist in any way you can.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? We're seeing a lot more bands going the independent route (Protest the Hero for example)

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? From a marketing standpoint, this is all exposure. Thank you for providing the platform!

Do you have any role models or idols? My musical role models are my teachers (Matt Halpern of Periphery and Chris Turner of Oceans ate Alaska), and my personal role model is absolutely my dad. We've all got musical role models that we look up to!

Why do you think that they exist? To make music and inspire others

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Both! There are so many local bands out there that grind through the tough days to do what they love. Through thick and thin, it's always about the music.

What have been your biggest obstacles? Perfecting our craft and learning the right balance in our lives that allows us to create the best music we can and stay true to our personal goals.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Get yourself out there! Play shows, shake hands, talk to people, and market yourself!

How do you get psyched for a gig? We all have our different warm-up routines, I usually disappear an hour before the set to stretch and warm up my hands/feet.

Do you have any new material? We've got two finished songs, "The Witness" and "Norma" (to be recorded soon). Another one in the pipeline titled 'Immolation".
