interview with The Starchilds

Have any of you played in other bands?

Yes, Valentin Loreau plays the guitar in another band with a female singer.

The starchilds’s guitarist/singer and songwriters Romain Beniattou, had the opportunity to play with a famous French singer, who’s called “Jean-Patrick CAPDEVIELLE” 

How is it that you started playing music?

The Starchilds’s Drummer, Cyprien Loreau had started to play during his childhood, listening the band as “Led zeppelin, Queen and others”.

The band’s rhythmic guitar player, Valentin Loreau began to play the guitar alone.

Clément, the bass player, began to play thanks to the band leader (Romain),

Who involved him when they were young.  

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?

Loreau Cyprien : Drummer – 17 years old

Loreau Valentin : rhythmic Guitar – 23 years old

Pierre Clément : Bass guitar – 23 years old

Beniattou Romain – Lead Guitar/Singer – Songwriter – 23 years old 

Have you had other previous members? Yes, we had a drummer before Cyprien, his name is Jaco NEE, he is a good drummer but he has health troubles so we need to change. we keep on playing with him for fun . 

Did you make music even when you were young? 

Yes, three of us started music together at the age of 14 years old, except Cyprien (Drummer) who started to the music school at the age of 9 years old. Where are you from?

We are all from Paris, but we traveled in other cities like Cologne in Germany and Toulouse in France and we hope to move again to play music in the world. 

What year did the band form? The starchilds was formed in 2012. 

What's your style of genre? We play any styles, but the rock and the blues are prevailing.  

What inspires you? We have various sources of inspiration, like Women, war, political subject, poverty … 

How often and where do you rehearse? We rehearse in Parisian studios or in guitarist’s house, everyday.

How have you developed since you started with the music? At the beginning, the leader started to teach the bass player before to play in live bar for two years, then we played in festivals, private views

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Yes, we work in record studio and events organization.  

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Yes, we are looking for a booking agency, to communicate easier and play through international concert or festivals.       

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Yes, we are looking for a label, to increase our audience through the world, and live thanks to our musical work. 

What made you decide to make this music? I decided to make my own music listening the Beatles, and I composed things I heard in my head, things that I had never heard before by other bands. 

What are your songs about? My songs speak about misery over the world, poverty, love, sex and feelings in general.  

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? The guitarist, singer, composer and songwriter is Romain Beniattou.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? It depends, sometimes I begin with music and some other time I begin with the lyrics and sometimes it is both at the same time. 

Do you compose in a certain environment? Yes, in the middle of the night when the feelings are heightened. 

What language do you sing in? Romain write poesy in the French language, he mostly writes songs in English but there are a few in French. 

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? According to the place it could be between 100 and 150 in a bar, and in a festival, it could be 1 000.   

What ages are most of your concert attendants? Our concert attendants are between 16 and 49 years old.  

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We adapt our music according to the public and we play our new songs.  

What was your first gig like? It was in a big theatre and we had played songs of Jimi Hendrix Experience, Eric Clapton from the Cream and the French band Téléphone.   

What was your latest gig? The latest gig was a festival which is called « Fête de l’Humanité » 

Have you had to cancel a gig? Yes, we had to cancel only one gig because the organizers forgot to take the backline.

Where do you plan to gig the coming year? At The international! 

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We don’t sell any merchandise, but we are going to do crowdfunding (October 20th, do not hesitate to talk about us around you J ). Then we will set up an album to sell and maybe some devices. 

Where can people buy your merchandise? They could buy our merchandise through internet. 

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? if it’s illegal downloading music it’s not fare for the artist and all the people who worked on it. But if it is legal downloading music it’s the future of music but it’s important to never forget the disc ‘s industry.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? I think that it’s bad because, the music was something to share, it was more convivial. But it could be also nice, because it offers an infinity of music choices everywhere and at any time.

What do you think of my work?  The questions are well targeted and I hope it would help a lot of people. More it is very good to see that there are still people who are attentive to the artist well-being. 

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? We hope to have more visibility, to touch a largest public. This will give us a positive energy to continue to do what we must do. 

Do you have any role models or idols? Yes, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and others. We also love artist that do not make specially music like Leonardo Da Vinci. 

What have been your biggest obstacles?  The lack of money. 

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Hold on, work a lot and make a lot of music tour with determination.  

How do you get psyched for a gig? We like to be in a calm environment, to empty our minds and a glass of bourbon is sometime good.  

Do you have any new material? No, we haven’t any new material
