interview with CHILD OF WASTE

Have any of you played in other bands? We've all had previous projects before C.O.W, some of us are still in other bands.
How is it that you started playing music? We've all started doing music a pretty classical way, young we are started with instruments like guitar, bass and piano and each of us found their way to what were searching for in music
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Omer - vocals 22 Thibault - bass 23 Jolan - guitar 24 Charlotte - guitar 25 Anthony - drums 26
Have you had other previous members? It's still the original line up
Did you make music even when you were young? Yes, everyone did music pretty young
Where are you from? We are all from Paris, France and the suburbs
What year did the band form? Start of 2015
What's your style of genre? It's like Deathcore with Brutal Death metal influence
What inspires you? The music is about modern riffs in composing with old school vibes (Infinite Death from TAIM, The Somatic Defilement from Whitechapel, etc...)
How have you developed since you started with the music? I think we've started with a more classical death metal way of composing and on the next EP we were searching of some kind of relentless violence with speed
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Anthony and Charlotte are in love with urbex, Thibault is a man made of music, in his deep DNA there is music, he lives for it and by it. Omer likes movies and video games. Jolan is Asian. (laughing in French)
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Yes, we're looking for a BA, it would help us grow as a professional band
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Same shit
What made you decide to make this music? It is the music that seems more natural to play with our musical background
What are your songs about? Various thing, mainly what I feel when I see the news or when I hear about the world, Sculptures on our DEMO is really about a feeling of guilt as a human being and seeing this guilt becoming a monster chasing us. It's really about what I feel in general, it can be anything.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? It's mainly Omer composing the music and the lyrics with some Thibault's ideas.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? We always did the music before the lyrics
Do you compose in a certain enviroment? No, it depends on the mood, sometimes I don't do anything for like 4 months and sometimes I'll make 4 songs in 3 days. It really depends on many things, the mood, the things I listen to at the time...
Have you done any covers live? No, it's not our thing
What language do you sing in? English, not that original
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? The least was a gig in a North of France bar with less than 10 people and the most was a gig in Paris with only local metal bands with a little more than 200 people
What ages are most of your concert attendants? Mainly young people on the streaming platforms, but at our gigs it's very various
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We have one setlist that we change from time to time, depending on our mood and the gig conditions
Do you have a regular place you play live often? We play most of the time in Paris and suburbs for now
What was your first gig like? It was a little underground cave, we were headlining and it was absolutely full of people
What was your latest gig? A little open air festival in center of France and it was absolutely mind-blowing
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We hope to be able to do our first French tour
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We only sell t-shirt for the moment and we are going to have a lot of new items when the EP comes out. We started printing some t-shirts when we noticed some people asking us for some merchandise
Where can people buy your merchandise? You can buy our merch our our Bandcamp site
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? It's all about living in your time, yes people are downloading music and I think, it shouldn't be a problem, it can only be positive on people to have acces on an illimted amount of art, people can only grow more cultivated of it. The question of the money for the artist and stuff like that is pretty hard, because of course the artists deserve money for what they create but what can you do when, with the internet, the concept of intellectual property is blurred... So it's very hard to speak about this, I prefer seeing it a good way as there is no way to change it for now.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? I think it allows more people to make music, so there is more music in general but there is less interesting music in each genre
What do you think of my work? I think it's important to have this kind of archive and passion into music, so it's exactly why our message it's important because people are listening to it
Do you have any role models or idols? We all have role models and idols in the band, there are all from different artistic universes. For exemple Omer has Ryan Gosling and as the opposit Thibault has CJ McMahon (from TAIM)
Why do you think that they exist? I believe there are no actual idols, there are people impersonating ideas that become idols of the eye of most people
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? It depends on how the bands accomplish to communicate ideas. For exemple Napalm death created a whole new way to understanding music where Slaughter To Prevail just stay in line of the modern slamming deathcore vibe what they do greatly. Inspiration can come from anywhere as long as it touches you
What have been your biggest obstacles? Maybe the communication between all the members of the band to create one entity
What advice would you give other bands or artists? We don't think we are really legit to give any advice on how to manage a band but one thing is sure, you need to really know your song before you do anything with it (as technically as artistically)
How do you get psyched for a gig? We try to erase any doubt and tell ourselves we are going to crush the venue
Do you have any new material? We already have a demo and a single leading to our next EP that is coming soon
What are your web sites? We don't have any actual web site but we are on every social media and streaming platforms
How can people reach you? Facebook mostly and our mail address
What are your plans for the future? We have a longtime project we are hard working on, it's all about the BREEEEEE all over the world
Do you have something to add? I think art is everywhere, it can change people, you have to believe in the meaning you want to give to what you create. Don't care about people telling you how stupid what you do is, it never was and will never be. Just express yourself and what you feel, it's the most important thing in life.
