interview with Outer

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, we played for a lot of bands (not only metal) in the past years.
How is it that you started playing music? Everyone had a different background, but we all love music so... that's it.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? We are Andrea (Vocals, class 1994), Matteo (Guitars, class 1996), Fabio (Guitars, class 1994), Alessandro (Bass guitar, class 1995) and Guido (Drums, class 1990).
Have you had other previous members? We had one previous member, the bassist Daniel.
Did you make music even when you were young? Yes, we started playing music in different moments but we were all kids.
Where are you from? We're from Cesena, in Emilia-Romagna (near Bologna).
What year did the band form? Outer project was born in 2014 from the ashes of our previous bands.
What's your style of genre? We play a sort of modern progressive metal with djent and core influences.
What inspires you? In our music you can hear everything by the classic prog vibes (Dream Theater, exc.) to the modern prog/djent elements (TesseracT, Periphery, Meshuggah, exc.); a special mention must go to Architects/ Northlane and some post-rock/ambiental influences in a few songs.
How often and where do you reherse? It depends, actually we're very busy with our works. We certainly rehearse before our gigs, at Woodoo Sound Labs (our rehearsal room).
How have you developed since you started with the music? We grew up all together as musicians and friends; time is very precious and we have to enhance it!
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? We're up in the music production; our first album is self produced except for the mastering process. In particular Matteo actually studying sound engineering and for example Guido managing a rehearsal room. We've other works too.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Fabio works with an italian booking agency for the national shows, but we're open-minded for any tipe of collaboration. The only important thing is to play our music!
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Yes, we're looking for a label that believes in our project but we'll publish our first album very soon with or without it!  The only important thing is to play our music, like we said before.
What made you decide to make this music? We listen many genres of music but we loved every single type of metal so we want to tell something strong with a strong music!
What are your songs about? Cool, about the strong message with strong music... our songs explore different territories. We can write something about the personal growth as we can talk about the human regression (wars, planet destruction, violence, exc.). The concept in common is the mankind with his fears, doubts and thoughts.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Everyone serves an important role in the creative process. For example the singer (Andrea) writes most of the lyrics but everyone of us putting his part; the same thing happens in the composition.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics?  Do you compose in a certain inviroment? It depends by the moment and the inspiration of course; sometimes both music and lyrics walks at the same time.
Have you done any covers live? No, we've never played covers live.
What language do you sing in? We sing in english.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? People at our gigs are very different; fortunately there are many types of listeners (from the HC average fan to the proggy nerd ahah).
What ages are most of your concert attendants? It depends, maybe from 16 to 40.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We've got regular songs but sometimes we love to vary the setlist.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? There's some club where we like to play, but it's very important touring everywhere (okay, maybe everywhere ahah).
What was your first gig like? First Outer show was really cool! We played in a friends pub in the Marche region and it was like a big family reunion.
What was your latest gig? Our latest gig was in Milan for Glory Of The Supervenient release party, a very interesting band! At this gig played our friend Ralph Salati (DESTRAGE) too.
Where have you played live this year? We played around Italy in some gig but less than the year before 'cause we're working on the album.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? This is a professional secrecy ahahaah.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We started after the first gigs, we have some t-shirts for now.
Where can people buy your merchandise? Come to our gigs ;) We'll open an online store with the album release.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? At live shows people often buy CDs and merchandise... maybe 'cause they don't have a computer with them.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Every type of industry changes with progress and time and maybe you have to adapt to the new trends. It is essential not to miss the music message! If downloading allows you to move on it's okay... if it doesn't allow to move on, then something goes wrong.
What do you think of my work?  How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business?  For bands like us your work is very important; this interview is a way to communicate with more people.
Do you have any role models or idols? We have more influences but believing in yourself is essential; in life you need to be your personal idol!
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Maybe it's easier to find inspiration from bands that are more active today, but influences don't have time.
What have been your biggest obstacles? In Italy it is more difficult to emerge as a metal band and this is a big obstacle and money is a problem... so it's very difficult to combine our works with our passion.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Be yourself, musically and like people. Music industry and life in general tend to change you everyday! Be your idol and believe in your dreams!
How do you get psyched for a gig? Being able to communicate something with our music, as we said before, is gratifying.
Do you have any new material? We're mixing our first album but we're gradualling recording a lot of ideas for the future.
What are your web sites? How can people reach you?
