interview with Edwin Hubble

How is it that you started playing music? I think music has always been in our hearts from a very childhood. All of us have been listening to all kinds of music as long as we remember ourselves. As a band we previously operated under another name with another genre. At some point we decided to play without vocals. That’s when we realized we have to fill our track with sense and meaning with our instruments and playbacks only. That’s when Edwin Hubble band was formed.
What year did the band form?
I’m pretty sure that changes happened in September 2013.
What's your style of genre?
It’s an instrumental mix of post-rock, post-metal, prog, art-rock, math-rock etc. But it’s hard to tell for sure. You’d better listen to some Edwin Hubble’s stuff and decide for yourself.
What are your songs about?
We try to cover different aspects that escort all of the humans during the life: sociopolitical themes, cancer patients, nature, robotics and AI, cosmology and expanding universe, domestic violence, mental experiments and so on.
Have you done any covers live?
Not yet. Maybe someday! But for now we don’t see any advantages in covering music.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary?
Of course, we try to play different sets every concert depending on the time given to us, size of the venue, type of audience, other bands’ etc. Thus, our own tracks do not tire either the audience or us. Sometimes we prepare a non-stop sets with only few seconds breaks between the songs to check out that guitar is tuned. We play instrumental music and usually do not even have a microphone on stage, so there’s not much to say J.
What was your first gig like?
Oh. Edwin Hubble’s first gig was “Space Fest”. It was quite a successful event in band’s life so our manager decided totake the initiative and to carry on with this fest. “Space Fest 2” has already got more people and was even more successful than the first one. Then we expanded this fest to other cities. As a result there were more than ten “Space Fest”s where we always had the honor to play.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? Well, life goes on. So does the technology. Everything is becoming “smart” to make our lives easier. You can basically live a life sitting alone at your home ordering everything you need online. In my childhood (and in my parents’ childhood) there just was something about buying a record (no matter if it’s vinyl or cassette), coming home and listening to it all day long. Nowadays you can get an album in few clicks. I mean, it’s just not that romantic anymore. And speaking of free downloading, I’d say that there’s nothing criminal in it. But it affects on the band’s revenue. As a result bands cannot afford more gigs, better shows, better merch and lots of other things that are good for both listeners and musicians.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Life always throws up some opportunities to all of us. We just have to catch them.
Do you have any new material?
Yes, sure. We have composed and rehearsed about a half of material for the third upcoming album. This time we plan to make it a concept album like all classic prog bands did. This is definitely something new for us, as besides music itself we have to make a story that walks you through all that tracks making a listener feel like he/she has read a book. This is challenging but extremely interesting.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Be honest and true. Always. With everyone. With yourself. If you do something - do it with all your heart and soul. Do not chase the profit. We are musicians and we were gifted to make art. Don’t be afraid to experiment. There’s no right or wrong. Don’t make a business out of art. Just create. Create. Create!
