Have any of you played in other bands?
Well, "Demonized Priest" is a one-man band project, but, i have received a few gigs proposals that took me to search for
session musician and i asked some of the guys from my other band (Tower of Silence), the ex-drummer from "Makinaria",
an oldschool thrash metal band from the city i belong, if they wanted to play, they say yes, so, here we are. Most of us have
played in other bands too, like "Gedeon", "Ultimo Aliento", "The Unhuman Thorn", "Sadomasokhrist" and few more.
How is it that you started playing music?
I started playing drums when i was 11, but i didn't wanted to stay in just one place, i wanted to mess around with the other members,
so i started to play guitar a few years latter, after that i got into metal music, wich i'm in love with and engaged (laughs).
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
I'm Baal, The Unhuman, 32 years old and i play all the instruments at studio and vocals in shows.
Cristian Huencho is one of the live guitar players, he is 27. Occultus is the other guitarrist, he is 24.
Krayt playes the bass, he is 24 and Jorge Contreras is the drummer, he is 23.
Have you had other previous members? No, previous members yet, we are "too new".
Did you make music even when you were young? Yeah! when i was very little i used to play the flute and a little bit of keyboards, my mother told me i used to sing too (haha).
Where are you from? We are, proudly, from San Antonio, V Region, Chile.
What year did the band form?
The idea of forming this band was a few years ago, but recently this year, a couple of months ago i recorded the EP called
"Sadistic Torture". So it has been only 5 or 6 months only.
What's your style of genre? We play speed black metal as the main genre, but i try to put some other metal/rock styles too.
What inspires you? The inspiration goes from satanism, torture machines, rituals, heretic parties and everything that the society forbides.
How often and where do you reherse?
Rehersal is something very important to us, but we don't have as much time as we want to, so we try to reherse any time
we can. There is a rehersal room downtown called "Subtestudios", a very great one i must say, so there is where we go.
How have you developed since you started with the music?
The music path here in Chile is very hard, lots of things are against you, but i think i'm going as well as i wanted to
since the begining. Every band i played in is a goal accomplished for me. I´m not trying to fit in any place, i just like
to crate and play music, that's my main goal.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band?
As i said, we play music cause we like it, we are not interested in making a career with this, but if we could do it, we
will be as happy as we are now. Everyone of us eather have normal jobs or studies.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that?
I think for now i just want to take the things slowly, booking agencies are great, i have no bad opinions about them, but
they cost and for now we don't have the money to pay for that service. Of course, we are open for any suggestion or
serious invitation.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Demonized Priest is under the chilean label "Evil Steel Records" for now, they do an amazing job. There will be a limited 100 tape edition in august, so stay in tune for more news!
What made you decide to make this music?
Metal music is something i've been in to since i was very little and always kept me intrested, so when i started playing
instruments, thats the first things i wanted to play. I remember playing Metallica riffs at the age of 12, that's how i started.
What are your songs about?
The lyrics speaks about everything that the church doesn't like (laughs), you know, satanism, torture, that kind of fun stuff.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? I do all the job for the moment, even mixing, mastering and production in general.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? I always start with the guitar line, i make some riffs and after that i make all the arrangements and lyrics at my studio.
Do you compose in a certain inviroment?
The inspiration comes anytime and anywhere, so when it comes, i always try to use it, can be anywhere, so i need to be prepared!
specially when i don't have a guitar near.
Have you done any covers live? Not yet, but we want to and, of course, that's a surprise (haha).
What language do you sing in?
I like to sing in english, but in the other bands we have some songs in our native language, wich is spanish.
I'm going to include a song with spanish lyrics in the next Demonized Priest album, that's for sure. I always like to be
in touch with my roots.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We haven't played live yet, so we can not say, but we wait for the best, of course.
What ages are most of your concert attendants?
It deppends of the places we can play, i mean, if we play live in an open air, there are no limits of age, but in a bar is different. We focus our music in anyone who likes it.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? For now, we will play onli the EP songs, maybe some surprises too, who knows?
Do you have a regular place you play live often? In our city there are almost no places to play metal, but there is a bar that sometimes does and there's where we play.
What was your first gig like?
Nice question, my first gig was a school one (maybe like many of you), i was like 10 years old, so nervious! But, i think
something clicked inside me that night that really got me into music and i think there is when i made my decision of being part
of metal for the rest of my life.
What was your latest gig?
My last gig was with my other band (Tower of Silence) and was on the 13th of january, we played in this amazing open air
festival called "Metalfilia" with some other great bands, like "Pentagram" (Chile), "Folkheim" and some other local ones.
Have you had to cancel a gig? Not yet! and that keeps me very happy for the moment. For cancel a gig y must be dying or something like that! (haha).
Where have you played live this year?
With my other band we have played in a few gigs, not much, cause we are intrested in working in the new album and, as i
said, there are a few upcoming gigs with Demonized Priest.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We don't think in that right now, as we always say, step by step, but we are prepared for everything, so we can go as far as we want.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We still no sell merch, people will have to wait until august for the limited ep edition.
Where can people buy your merchandise? The merch will be available at the "Evil Steel Records" facebook fan page or the band one.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days?
Sometimes that helps on knowing bands, but it's escential that even you download the music for free, you buy it.
Music industry is like any other job, there is lots and lots of hard work involved, hours of dedication and effort, so
don't take the music as a game, bands works very hard and most now, in these technologichal era.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this?
It has changed a lot! It's so easy to make music right now and easier to download it, but nothing compares to the idea
of making music like the old ways, as hard as it was, the feelings were different, i mean, the music was inspiring.
I think to make music nowadays you really need to mix technology with analog devises as a way to preserve the sound of real
instruments and, of course, if your music is good, people would preffer buying your cds, tapes, etc.. instead of downloading it.
What do you think of my work?
I always say that anyone who can support metal music in general, in any kind of ways, does, for sure, an awesome work.
We need more metal supporters such as blogs, zines, pages, etc. like yours, for example. That's the main reason of why i accept
on answering this interview, so keep on with the great job!
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? I don't know if this interview would help me or not, but i know i'm having a great time answering it, so thank you!
And i must say, this is a great deal for us! It is hard to get our music out from our country.
Do you have any role models or idols?
Well, now i really don't, but when you are young, sometimes you need at least one as a model, is like when you look
forward a metal artist for being like him when you grow up (haha), those "idols" are important for a young boy that, maybe,
don't get his parents support in terms of music, like the "Twister Sister" video (laughs).
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today?
Yeah! Totally! I was so inspired by the great old bands, even now! I still hear the music i listen when i was a child and
of course the new bands and i always find some inspiration on new artists, i'm greatfull about it.
What have been your biggest obstacles?
Wow... this is a tricky question... I think our biggest obstacle as human beings is ourselves, cause we are the ones who put
the "stoper" in our lifes goals, we like it or not. In my case, it was like that, but, confident and family always helped.
What advice would you give other bands or artists?
DON'T STOP!! Keep attached to your dreams and let the music flow! Focus on your goals as a musician and as a band, listen
to all music genres and save the best for yourselves to use it as an inspiration. Keep on with the hard work no matter how
long does it takes or how hard it turns.
How do you get psyched for a gig?
I don't do much really, speak to the band members, have a few beers and lots of guitar practice and vocals too, that
keeps me calmed.
Do you have any new material? Not for now, just the EP in social media (youtube, bandcamp, spotify, deezer, etc.)
What are your web sites? How can people reach you? All band contacts, questions, etc. to the mail:
What are your plans for the future? I just want to keem making music, that's my main goal, love metal and i olways will, so i'll keep enjoying this!
Do you have something to add?
Well, thank you a lot for this oportunity to show more about my band, i had a great time! Cheers to all! And keep
supporting metal music!!
