interview with Sintax
Have any of you played in other bands? Yes,the two of us ( Agung X and Angra Dwipangga ) were played to a grindcore band called Konspirasi X,they have one split album under my own label Akar Rumput Records.
How is it that you started playing music? Well,i love music since i was kid,i used to be vocalist to many local rock bands before i found Sintax in 2003,but none of them that released album,they're only cover band for fun..then in Sintax i feel like i can write anything in my head into the song,so here we are,with 3 albums,4 split cds,and many compilation album.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? My name Cuplis261 at bass,vocal,songs writer,im 39 years old now,Agung X at guitar,he might be less than 37 years old,and Angra Dwipangga the drummer,he's about 30 years old.
Have you had other previous members? Sure,since 2003 till now 2018,i am the original member and founder of Sintax,old members are Fajar/drum,Santo/bass,Agungxxx/guitar,Gembur/bass,Trijoe/guitar,Iwan/drum,Petox/guitar.
Did you make music even when you were young? I make music since im with Sintax.
Where are you from? We live in a small city called Jember in east java indonesia.
What year did the band form? It's on the middle of september 2003.
What's your style of genre? It's a hardcore punk with raw sound i think..
What inspires you? i guess it such as real life story,how we feel,what we think,and how we deal with it.
Musically we have different taste of music,but in Sintax im sure we have so many bands that inspire us,i can name a few like Disrupt/usa,Agathocles/belgium,Protes Bengt/sweden,and many others.
How often and where do you reherse? It's been a while that we're not in the studio because our personal activity in works and to be with our family.
How have you developed since you started with the music? As a band we think we're too lazy to do anything like other bands did,but we have produced albums,doing some tours,produced our own merchandise,and still practice at the studio.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? we're not working in the band,i mean we have personal work,im a beach guard,agung is a farmer,angra work as the office boy..other interest to do for me such as write my zine,produce album and merchandise,organize a show,and anything else that related to the hardcore punk scene,and its not for profit oriented,only pleasure and communication.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? "Do it with yourfriend"system works for us,so if we talk bout booking agency in my area are full of profit agenda,if you know what i mean,then i say hell no,they didnt give a damn about what we do in this networking scene.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? So far we have our own label and some friend's networking label that distribute our cds and merchandise,we are open for co working or co release,but first we have to know their track records and commitment.
What made you decide to make this music? Well its bcoz we enjoy it,feel comfortable in this scene,and being honest to ourself that we love extreme and noise music..haha.
What are your songs about? We talks about real life,daily life,scene,inner peace,anger,and stuff like that..you can check it yourself and feel it.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? I wrote all the lyrics and most of the arrangement,then we finished it in the studio together with band member.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Depends on how we elaborate the idea,but it often with the music first.
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Only in the studio,outside the studio we have our own personal life with the job and family..but the idea of composing our music could be arrange from everywhere,i mean i can sing it first or play my guitar then record to my phone and show it to other member.
Have you done any covers live? We did,it's the cover song from Disrupt,Agathocles,Total Chaos,and Nirvana.
What language do you sing in? English,Indonesian,and one song in Javanese..our local traditional language is javanese.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We have played to many gigs,but not so big gigs,maybe betwen 50 to hundreds of people,most of them are friends of ours.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? Mostly teenagers between 15 to 35 years old,but sometimes i see the crowd with the kids and we take care each other by protect them from the circle pits or pogo area.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? As a band that often change it's formation member,of course we play various songs when we perform,old and new songs can be played one by one if our mood is ready..haha.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? Mostly in a studio gig,beach gig,or cafe,bars,sometime in the building like stadium or campus sport hall.
What was your first gig like? Its on the field,local football field,with most audience have nothin to do with a hardcore punk and they like whatthefuck is that noise,not entertaining them and we just fuck it lets play the raw sound and torture their ears,haha..i think we're not allowed to play in that gigs again,its not hardcorepunk gig at all,just bunch of rockstars and popstars wannabe..haha.
What was your latest gig? Its a small hardcorepunk gig,but full of happines,so much fun,our friends come around,play together in one stage..even we need no stage at all,everyone can sing along,screaming out loud together..
Have you had to cancel a gig? Yes we had,sometime shit happen,we're sorry for that,but we have no choice at the time and we hope we can make it the other day.

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? No plan yet,i think this year we're not gonna play outside the city,maybe just playing around our local area,we're still preparing for a new record,hope it will be done this year.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale?
Well,as i remember,we produce merch after we release an album,so it's one package,there's a cd,tees,patch,sticker,newsletter..but we also share our songs for free download via reverbnation and other links that uploaded by our friends.
Where can people buy your merchandise? We bring our merch at gigs,and if it's online,you can contact me first to my fb or email,because we dont have online store links,we did it the old way.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Well,if we talk about my band,i dont mind this,you can download our songs for your own pleasure for free,but if you re produce and sell it,you better contact the band first and make it clear..copyright system is bullshit for me,but i think we should understand that not all bands or musician did it for money,so theres the line between sold out or do it yourself attitude,then we will know who deserve to get our respect.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? We have nothing to do with the music industry,as i said,not all bands or musicians make its music for the money,i think its the matter of how we gonna make it through,i mean its not a big business for us how the music industry getting bigger or collapse,sorry for that..
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? No plan yet,i think this year we're not gonna play outside the city,maybe just playing around our local area,we're still preparing for a new record,hope it will be done this year.
