interview with SCUM HUMAN

Have any of you played in other bands? Many. Brian plays in SIXBREWBANTHA and WASTE AWAY. Conor also plays in SICKENER, Jordan used to do vocals in SUBSIST and a few other bands. I (Tommy) also play in THROAT SLITTER and was in OBACHA, WAR HERO and PRISON VIOLENCE.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you? Brian 26 guitar, Conor 22 bass, Jordan 29 vocals. Tommy 25 drums
Have you had other previous members? Nope and I'd imagine we won't for awhile.
Where are you from? Vancouver, British Columbia
What's your style of genre? West coast powerviolence
What inspires you?The early 90s powerviolence scene, and the current powerviolence scene. Fuck the 2nd and 3rd wave.
How often and where do you rehearse? Monday's and Fridays at Tommys house. Usually at about 8pm with plenty of weed/cigarette breaks in between.
How have you developed since you started with the music? Our new songs got slightly more difficult to play than our previous ones? We're not exactly breaking any new ground stealing CROSSED OUT and NO COMMENT riffs over here.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band?We all drink a lot, does that count? Some of us set up shows but not very often. We all go to shows quite regularly.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that?/Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that?  Actually RSR records hit us up like a day after we posted the demo. So we'll be working with them.
What made you decide to make this music? There's a real lack of grindcore/powerviolence bands around vancouver and what few bands there are rarely play, so we figured we'd add one more to the pile.
What are your songs about?Mostly people dying, being selfish assholes, violence, all that fun stuff. Our latest song is about a kid that shoots up his school after smoking a bunch of crack. Real nice.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? All of us. Some a bit more than others but we all contribute.
What language do you sing in? English. I know some bad words in Punjabi but that's probably the extent of any of us speaking other languages. Brian knows some bad shit too. Oh yeah "kuso" is "shit you" in Japanese. Yell that if you ever see SETE STAR SEPT.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? Least: 30. Most: 60. We've played like 3 shows but I think this weekend we might play to 100 people at fastcore fest for a new record.
What was your first gig like?Pretty fun. It was at the alf house with ENDORPHINS LOST, VOLTARINE and BROCRUSHER. Conor was still in Oakland so we just played without him.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year?Couple shows in Seattle and some sick shows around Vancouver/Squamish. I go to school so touring is out for this year unfortunately.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days?Well when I got into hardcore in 2003 that was the year MySpace started so I can't really speak about the old days. I'd imagine the 90s was a total pain in the ass to find new bands or good shows. I don't really mind being able to hear the new INTERNAL ROT or EXTORTION records right away, since Australia is pretty far from Canada.
What have been your biggest obstacles?Borrowing someone's car to drive our shit the 20 blocks to a show. We don't leave east vancouver.
What advice would you give other bands or artists?play fast
How do you get psyched for a gig?One time we all took mdma before our set, but it didn't kick in until after we played. Too bad.
Do you have any new material? We have 5 new songs were recording for a split EP with CONCUSSIVE on RSR records.
What are your web sites?Http://scumhuman.bandcamp.com
How can people reach you?[email protected]
What are your plans for the future? Touring, records, playing california as soon as we possibly can. Maybe an LP? I don't know, we write shit pretty fast so we'll see.
Do you have something to add? Thanks for the interview. Come to the northwest if you wanna see us.
