interview with The Smoking Hiccup Machine

Have any of you played in other bands? All three of us have.

How is it that you started playing music? We all started playing music in young age and one day we found each other and started the band!

What are your names? / Who plays what? Foudou on Vocals and Bass, Eva on Drums and Kostas on Guitar.

Have you had other previous members? Almost for a year we had female backing vocals.

Where are you from? We are from Athens, Greece.

What year did the band form? It started in 2016. We met through a facebook ad and stuck together!

What's your style of genre? We don’t have a specific genre. We like good music and we play whatever we like. So in our music you can hear hard rock, rock n’ roll, alternative rock, stoner, blues, some jazz, some swing!

What inspires you? We find inspiration in every little detail of our everyday life.

How often and where do you reherse? We rehearse every week in a studio in Athens!

How have you developed since you started with the music? Every day you learn something new, so our singing and style of playing is evolving all the time. We have come a long way since the creation of the band.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Yes, we all have a job.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We haven’t searched yet. Everything we do, we do it by ourselves. I don’t think it’s a bad idea though to be in a booking agency. I believe that an agency would provide more opportunities for a band,

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We recently release our first EP “Several Pieces For Different Species” and we will look for a label for sure!

What made you decide to make this music? This is the kind of music through which we can best express ourselves.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Our songs is a result of collaboration of all the three of us! In every song there’s an idea of everyone.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Every time we start with music and then we add the lyrics.

Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Inspiration can come anytime!

Have you done any covers live? Once at the beginning we played “Woo Hoo” by The 5.6.7.8's and now we’re covering “Too Drunk To Fuck” by Dead Kennedys and “These Boots Are Made For Walking” by Nancy Sinatra.

What language do you sing in? All our songs are in English.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? Mostly 20-30 I guess.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We’re playing all the songs we have on our catalogue every time!

What was your first gig like? Oh God! It was a disaster! Hahaha! We were very nervous and it seemed like we didn’t enjoy it at all! Our bassist was the “cool guy” and tried to cheer us up! He didn’t make it!

What was your latest gig? Our last gig was between friends, as we played for our bassist’s birthday and was a unique experience!

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We haven’t started yet, but we plan to in the future.

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? I’m a record collector myself and I think that buying music is a very beautiful thing! Downloading is the easy and mostly the free way to have an album, but it’s not the same to have the record in your hands! It’s mainly harmful for the labels, but sometimes it could help the band to get acknowledgment faster.

What advice would you give other bands or artists? Play the music you love and don’t be a part of the trending culture!

How do you get psyched for a gig? We drink beers and get ready to rock!

Do you have any new material? We have many ideas we haven’t completed yet, but we’re working on them!
