interview with BOMBSCARE

Have any of you played in other bands? We've all played in a number of bands, Edgar came from his brainchild Maldicion. I (Pat) was in a band called Deserters that was doing fairly well.
How is it that you started playing music? We started the same way alot of kids do. We discovered our first metal records as kids and it inspired us enough to learn how to play and here we are however many years later haha.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
I'm Patrick Murphy (27) I'm vocals and bass.
Tom Murphy (25) and Edgar Flores (21) are guitarrists.
and Fernando Villagran (19) plays drums.
Have you had other previous members? We had a couple of drummers starting out, drummers are always the hardest ones to find, especially one thats genuinely down for the cause haha. But otherwise the lineup has been consistent for the past year and a half. We were a three piece for a long time and just recently brought Edgar into the band.
Did you make music even when you were young? Yeah we all started young.
Where are you from? We're all from Bakersfield, Ca (USA) With the exception of Fernando who is from Wasco, about 30 minutes north of us.
What year did the band form? We started in late 2013 after Deserters finished for me. Me (Pat) and Tom started the band and started throwing riffs together, those riffs turned into songs. It took forever to find a drummer, almost 2 years but we didn't give up and we slowly put things together.
What's your style of genre? Thrash metal, I'd say we pay omage to the past without trying to be a throwback band if that makes sense. We just try to do our own thing.
What inspires you? Our favorite bands of course, and we have a very strong work ethic. We inspire eachother to better ourselves. We have big aspirations for the band and we're in it for the long haul.
How often and where do you reherse? As much as we can, we all work real jobs and have real bills to pay. We're definately a workung man's vand haha. We rehearse mostly at my (Pat) house in the garage.
How have you developed since you started with the music? We've all come a LONG way.. it's pretty simple, the more you play the tighter you become as a group, especially when you tour. Bombscare's first tour was in May to support our debut release "T-Minus..." We are doing our next run in the winter.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band?
Are you looking for a booking agency/label, and what are your thoughts around that? We're indifferent, if someone with actual merit approaches us with a favorable contract then we'd consiter. But in this day and age we can do alot of that shit ourselves. It's alot of work but we don't have to pay anybody a cut and we don't get involved in all the politics and bullshit that can come when you sign to someone. It seems alot of these labels and agencies are out to fuck you in the long run, they want to make the quick buck and move on to the next band to sucker.
What made you decide to make this music? Because there's way too many deathcore bands hahahah
What are your songs about? I (Pat) write the lyrics. It's mostly innerpersonal, or stems from a real life experience.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Just answered half that question, We write and arrange the songs together as a band. Alot of bands have one maybe two guys that sit on a computer and put everything together. We do shit the old fashioned way, sit in a room together crack beers and riff it out.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? It just depends, I write lyrics independent of the music, but sometimes the riff is written around the riff, or the other way around. Just depends on what comes first.
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Nothing in particular. Inspiration can come from anywhere.
Have you done any covers live? Just once or twice, our first shows we didn't have enough material for a full set so we covered Whiplash because we all knew it and it was easy to quickly throw together haha.
What language do you sing in? English
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? That's a tough one. We're still pretty small just trying to build our name. If i was to estimate largest crowd was like 100 smallest like 5 haha.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? That's what's so cool about thrash, it spans over generations. We have fans that are kids and fans as old as our parents haha.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We are at the point where we can start go variate a little, most of the time we're playing 30 minute sets so we can swap a song out here and there, or even play in different orders to keep it fresh.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? We only have one all ages venue in Bakersfield at this point in time, Jerry's Pizza.
What was your first gig like? Bombscare's first gig was a DIY fest that was put on by our good friend Eddie. We played second to like 30 or 40 heads and the place went fucking wild. I think that set is floating around on youtube somewhere.
What was your latest gig? We played a house show last night at our guitarrist Edgar's place. It was alot of fun. Good times with good friends.
Have you had to cancel a gig? Once ever, maybe. We don't believe in dropping shows. We always follow through with confirmed dates for better or worse. We don't believe in bad business.
Where have you played live this year? All over the place. So far all over California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, and Nevada. In the winter we're going to cut eastward as far as Texas.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? Everywhere we can possibly book.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? Pretty early on, selling merch is a band's bread and butter. Right now we have t shirts, cds, patches, and stickers.
Where can people buy your merchandise? Online, or at a show. Our current link is bombscare.bandcamp.com but uou can always message us direct on facebook for anything. I kind of prefer it that way, it's more personal and I love talking to fans.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Love or hate the guy, Lars Ulrich was right. The Napster thing was kind of a Pandora's box and record sales have never been the same. But it's just the reality of things. I honestly don't care I just want people to enjoy our music.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Albums used to support tours, now tours support albums. You have to go live and shove it down people's throats.
What do you think of my work? To be completely honest, I didn't know you prior to you reaching out to us for this interview, but I saw your work and really appreciate and respect what you do.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? You can never know what to expect, I just hope someone gives a fuck enough to read this and maybe learn something about us as people. I personally love reading about my favorite bands.
Do you have any role models or idols? Oh, tons. I could go on and on haha, but as far as the band is concerned a few of our main influences are Forced Entry, Demolition Hammer, Sacred Reich, Sadus, Atrophy, Evil Dead, Vio-Lence, Intruder, Onslaught, I can seriously go on for days hahaha.
Why do you think that they exist? Without making it a history lesson, I suppose all of these amazing bands were in the right place at the right time with the right sound.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? It's a 50/50 thing for us, we love both. Some of the more modern ones we like are Dust Bolt, Tantara, Lich King, Violator, Suicidal Angels, Crisix, Vektor, Ultra Violence, Chronosphere, again the list goes on and on.
What have been your biggest obstacles? It's been a constant uphill battle for us. The bullshit is never ending but it's always worth it because doing this is everything to us.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Don't let anybody say you can't do it, work hard at your craft, stay hungry, stay humble.
How do you get psyched for a gig? It come's naturally, the stage is where we always want to be
Do you have any new material? Yes, we have new material in the works.

How can people reach you? The best way is through facebook, either message the band direct or our personal pages. Ask us anything, we won't bite haha
What are your plans for the future? Keep touring and releasing music, that's how you get more fans. If you're not growing you're dying.
Do you have something to add?
To anyone reading this, we can't thank you enough for taking the time to listen to what we had to say. And Robex, we can't thank you enough for reaching out to us to do this interview. Pick up T-Minus... from us at a show, buy it online, or download it for free, just listen to the damn thing!
Cheers everyone!
