interview with Foreshadow

What´s the name of your band? Foreshadow

How was the band formed? Foreshadow was formed in January 2008 by our former drummer and myself.

Can you tell about your band? Foreshadow is a blend of American death metal blended with Swedish melodic death metal.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We are all from the Tampa, Florida USA area. Daniel “Corkscrew” McConaghy-Vocals, Aaron Robinson-Guitars, Chris Billingsly-Bass, Jon McDonald-Drums.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? To record and tour as many places as possible.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? We are a metal band that blends the extreme sounds of death and black metal, with the melody of power metal.

Where was your first gig? My first gig was at Freakin Pizza in Columbus, Ohio USA back in 1993.

Where was the latest gig? Last October at Bourbon Street in New Port Richey, Florida USA.

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? All the lyrics are written by Dan. The music usually begins with my guitar riffs. We all contribute to the music.

Who has the best since of humor in the band? We are all funny in our own way. Dan has a very witty sense of humor that makes you think. Chris can come up with some funny one-liners off the top of his head.

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? The good thing about our band, is our ability to bring different influences to the table. We are a metal band.  We don’t fall into any particular subgenre.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? We didn’t pick our style, it is just what comes out of us. Our songs are about various subjects. “The Meaning of Life”, is about the struggles that everyday working people contend with. “Death By Medicine”, is our own more morbid interpretation of Romeo and Juliet.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We mostly write our own material. We have one cover Pantera’s “By Demons Be Driven.”

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? We currently have two out. “The Stranger End of Death” in 2012, and “Nations of Failure” in 2009.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? We have our official music video for “The Meaning of Life”, here is the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=flZ1IB7mGQs

How old are you?/What got you started in music? I am 37. Hearing the Ozzy Osbourne “Randy Rhodes Tribute” album is what got me to play.

At what age did you start playing? 10

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? I was 13.

What year was the band started? 2008

Best/worst gig you've played? Our best gig had to be the Calarca Metalfest in Calarca, Colombia. The crowd was loud and amazing. Our worst gig would be in Murphy, North Carolina. The audience expected us to be a cover band, and play 70’s dance songs. They were in for a surprise.

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? We don't have any gigs planned currently. We are just focusing on the new album.

Where have you played from then till now? We have played throughout the USA, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? Iron Maiden is the best band I have ever seen live.

Is it always the same songs live? We change it up depending on the length of the set.

What has been the best/most promising gig so far? The most promising show was the Bowery Electric in New York City. That was a great opportunity to play in one of the world’s largest cities.

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? We headlined a South American Tour, and a few tours in the USA.

How big crowds do you usually play for? Between 100-300 people, it depends on the city and marketing.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? Keep writing the new album, and track the demo.

Where do you usually play? Anywhere who will have us.

How do you get psyched up for a gig? Drinking Jack Daniels, and listen to Slayer.

What are your goals with your music? To keep making music our fans enjoy, and to tour as many locations as possible.

When did you decide to go all in for the music? I decided that when I was 25, when I got in a original band that I believe in.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? I get most of my inspiration from older bands, and older music. I get most of my inspiration from jazz and classical music.

What are your sources of inspiration? Other works of art, weather it is film, music, or visual art.

What's the first step when making a new song? It all begins with the riff. When a good hook comes to me, I build the rest of the music around it.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? You can buy full albums through downloading. The only thing I am not a fan with downloading is that, it puts more emphasis on the single; and not any emphasis on the completed album.

What would be your dreams for the band? To have an international following, and tour the world.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? I love jazz, and when I relax I really like New Age music. No specific band in those genres.

What do you hold most dear? My family and close friends.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? That Foreshadow stops trying to create music.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? I don’t really fear anything on stage. I feel free when I am on stage, and it is just magical.

Have you been part of any other projects? I have done a lot of studio work for electronic dance projects.

Have you been in any other bands? I was in a cover band Metamorphosis. I was also in metal bands Genocide, Mindtrip, and Black Zodiac.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? I am a truck driver for a plumbing supply company.

What would you do if there was no music? I would have probably continued Acting.

How important are your fans? They’re everything to us.

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? A woman in Guayaquil, Ecuador asked us to sign her pregnant belly.

How often do you rehearse? 3-4 days a week.

Where do you rehearse? We rehearse in a studio in Tampa, FL USA.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? I am excited with “Southern Steel” and “Time has Forgotten the Glory Days.” I can’t wait to get those songs out on the new album.

What do you feel is the best live band you've seen? Iron Maiden is the best live band I have ever seen.

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? We just love writing and recording new music. What drives us is continuing to create. That is the basis of being in this business in the first place. A great jazz musician Charlie Haden once said “Money is the side effect of good art.” If we can make a living, that would be a dream and it would be fantastic. But if it doesn’t happen, then I feel we will still be a success by sharing our sound that will be around long after we are gone.

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Keep writing and performing the music you believe it. Then learn as much about the music business as you can.

Describe your show, visually and musically? We have a high energy show. We get down into the crowd at times, and interact with the fans.

How do you view the musicindurty of today? It is still trying to find its place after the creation of Napster. I don’t believe the industry has fully recovered. I see it struggling to remain a viable business in today’s changing tastes in entertainment.

What advice would you like to give other bands? Learn as much as you can about the music business, and spend the money on a lawyer before entering in any deals.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Marketing your music is the biggest obstacle. Trying to get through, to get the audience to pay attention to what you are doing.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs? The best club we have played is the Bowery Electric in New York City. Great sound and well equipped venue. The worst club would have to be Cheavelle 66 in Murphy, NC.

Tell us about upcomming gigs and why we should be at them? We don’t have any upcoming gigs at this time.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence? A blend of melody and brutality.

What is your favorite crappy instrument? I would have to say the harpsichord.

What was one of the most quarrelsome times for you in the band? We haven’t had any real quarrelsome moments. We have always been able to talk civilly about our disagreements. Our former members have left to do life changing events, we don’t have any grudges toward each other.

Whats your Pre-show ritual? I usually drink Jack Daniels while watching the other bands. Interact, and thank everyone who has come to the show.

Do you have anything to add? Feel free to message us on our facebook page with any questions, or just to chat. Unless we are busy at the moment, we will answer.
