interview with Reedemed in Pain

What´s the name of your band? It´s Reedemed in Pain, which is quite clever, because that way you can call it „RIP“ short. Like „Rest in Peace“.

How was the band formed? We were still going to school and thought it was a good idea to start a band. Metal was our thing since quite some time, and so we started with absolutely no experience and some cheap instruments our first sessions. This was back in 2007 and we made quite some progress, i guess.

Can you tell about your band? Redeemed in Pain – that means some melodical but still catchy death metal with social and personal lyrics , brought to you by some down-to-earth guys from germany. For best results , enjoy live.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? First ,there are our 2 guitar players, Daniel and Nils, being 21 and 25 years old. Then our drummer Erik, also 21 and myself, Benjamin, 24, playing bass and screams.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? We just loved metal in all his forms, so we thought : „Hell, we would love to do that too.. so yeah, we just came together and played what we thought was cool, writing songs that other people hopefully would enjoy and of course, we love as well.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? Sure, it´s melodical death metal, sounding like a mix of In Flames, Arch Enemy, Chimaira and other bands, coming from that genre. But we also dont copy their stuff, going our own way is the key. The songs live to be played in front of an audience, who enjoys to bang their heads and scream with us.

Where was your first gig? This was in an older restaurant called „Goldener Adler“ in Sömmerda, Thuringia, our hometown. Together with 3 other bands from the region, we had a blast presenting our handmade music for the first time.

Where was the latest gig? That was in Erfordia, December 2013, together with the quite well known band „Eisregen“. Since then, we were recording our 2nd album , so we didnt played live since then.

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? Mostly, the ideas and main riffs come from me, Benjamin, then we all get creative in the rehearsal room and finish the song, the solos and so on. The lyrics also come from me, mainly because i have to feel them, what makes me able to sing them later on.

Who has the best since of humor in the band? We all do! Really, we have a lot of fun together, make jokes, laugh a lot and enjoy doing what we do. Which also makes our live performances so unique.

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? I cant quite name anything bad at the band, to be honest. At worst, its the waiting. Waiting for gigs, waiting for band practices, waiting for the groupies to show up. ;) As said – melodic death.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? We all are great lovers of big melodies that get stuck in your head and stay there for a while. So this came quite naturally. The songs are about social problems, that everyone or the society at whole is facing at the moment. Despair, struggle, the fear of beeing left alone, but also topics that get you up morally. Also, poverty, nuclear warfare and the humanity itself.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We write our own music, covers were only played in the beginning of our time together. Just to get the feel.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? Sure, there is first, the album „Ikarus“ , recorded in 2010 with 8 songs. And, absolutely new, the soon-to-be-released album „Dead Ænd Decisions“, coming this autumn.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Indeed, you can find them under https://www.youtube.com/user/Psych0Head , enjoy!

Best/worst gig you've played? Hm, we played approximately 30 gigs in the last years, hard to name a best or worst one. I guess some gigs where you stand in front of 4 people and a blind dog, because the promoter didnt planned so well, can count as „bad“, but we still give everything and try to deliever. Even if it´s for 4 people and a blind dog. And the best gig, there are too many!

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? Wherever we can! Trying to invade Germany sounds like a good plan.

Where have you played from then till now? You can find a list of locations on our website.

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? We liked quite a lot of them, guess there are too many to be named.

Is it always the same songs live? No, we change our setlist from gig to gig.

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? We dream about them everyday, but no, not quite yet.

How big crowds do you usually play for? Let´s say about 150 people, pending.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? Promoting our new album and playing more and more!

Where do you usually play? Wherever we can!

How do you get psyched up for a gig? We are pretty chilled guys, so we sit back, drink one or twelfe beer and watch the other bands play. Some warm ups, vocal and instrumental warm up and off we go.

What are your goals with your music? Getting a lot of metalheads to like it, we are not in for the childhood dream of big opulence through the music. Neither for the girls. We just play to be heard.

When did you decide to go all in for the music? We all work or study, so no all in till now.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? I guess mordern bands inspirate us a lot. There is this big wave of bands, trying to sound like the 70´s and Sabbath, but why would you copy something that had be done before? If i want to hear ACDC, i listen to them. And not to a band that does everything like them.

What are your sources of inspiration? They every day life, a lot of good music from the last years and countless hours of practice.

What's the first step when making a new song? The first step is often just a riff, coming up in your head. Then you just work around it, until it´s done.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? Well, it´s just something that came with the time and technology. If you can sell your CD´s via the internet, then fine, do it. But nothing beats a solid Case, or if you are a fan of retro, a vinyl in your closet. And if you enjoy bands, you buy their CD´s , that´s just fair.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? Maybe to be separated through work or other circumstances. But if it´s so, we try to be together as long as possible. And if this doenst work, we will always be musicians.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? Breaking your instrument is pretty bad. Or falling from the stage. Be thrown at with something. You just have to be chilled and relaxed, and deal with these situations then.

Have you been in any other bands? We all have or had some other projects, some rock bands, some other metal bands. At the moment, only our drummer Erik is in a quite interesting metalcore band called „Betty Murdered Me“.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? Erik and Nils are both undergraduates. Daniel is a radiographer and I work in a kindergarten as an educator.

What would you do if there was no music? I guess create them. A life without music would be pretty boring and depressing.

How important are your fans? Really important. We totally love to talk to them after the gigs, drink a beer together and just chat about music and themselves.

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? It´s for a quite unknown band funny when they come to you after a gig and want autographs. That´s something famous people do. But if they want it, well, it has to be done.

How often do you rehearse? One or two times a week.

Where do you rehearse? In our own rehearsal room, located in Sömmerda.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? These would be „Tombstone Poetry“ and „Empty Assault“, both to be found on our newest CD.

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? They energy of the people which see us live. Noticing how they enjoy what you created, that´s why we all started this project and are still hungry for more.

Do you have any webpages?  Sure, there is our facebook page www.facebook.com/ripthuringia and our website http://redeemedinpain.com/ .

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? I guess there is only one thing , that we´ve been seeing done wrong a lot of times. „Don’t be assholes“. Really, if we see some kids, who played 4 shows together, acting like some rockstars, destroying stuff from the promoter or acting like douche bags on stage, this drives us crazy.

Describe your show, visually and musically 4 guys, bathed in their sweat, showing your their definition of melodic death metal and beeing quite handsome at the same time.

How do you view the music indurty of today? Overflown i guess. There are so many bands out there that you can loose track so easily. It´s hard to find the pearls in this ocean.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Getting gigs. Because clubs only want you when you are well-known. And you only get some reputation BY playing. Quite a vicious circle.

Tell us about upcoming gigs and why we should be at them? At the moment, there are 2. One in an swimming bath in „Rastenberg“, and one in Erfordia, in the club „From Hell“. You should be there because we are awesome!
