interview with AlgomA

What´s the name of your band? AlgomA

How was the band formed? AlgomA was formed in November of 2012. Darby and I have known each other for years and we decided to start a new band. While jamming together for a couple of months before that (with me on bass and Darby on drums) we came up with a few riffs, decided to name it AlgomA and actually wrote our first song "Fell Down a Well"!  Then we needed to look around for a drummer and we met JV. We started jamming with JV in November and everything just clicked. We got along great and knew that this was the line up!

Can you tell about your band? AlgomA is a three piece sludge metal band from Garden River/Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada.  We play heavy down-tuned Sludge, with a mix of Noise Rock, and we sing about strange and depressing stories! haha

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We have Darby Wiigwaas, from Garden River, Ontario. He plays guitars and does some vocals. Next, We have our drummer JV, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. And then there is me, Kevin Campbell, also from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and I play Bass and I do some vocals!

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? We all got together and just wanted to make some heavy tunes, and play what we like! Release some albums, hopefully some people will dig it, and maybe get our album pressed on vinyl!!

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? The music is really heavy and slow, with some feedback/noise and some screaming/hollering type of vocals! It's Ear shattering Doom/Sludge with some Noise Rock influence!

Where was your first gig? Our first gig was in our hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.  It was at a cool venue called 180 Projects, and it was on GORE St.!! haha... It was a very cool show, the venue has a projector, so whenever we play there we usually make a video to project onto the wall during our set!! We played the show with Soul Killing Female, another great heavy Canadian band from Winnipeg, Manitoba!

Where was the latest gig? The last gig that we played was at a house show in St. Catherine's, Ontario in mid Oct. We did a little mini tour to Southern Ontario with our friends in Bad Back, and we played Toronto first, then over to St. Catherine's for a killer old school basement show with our buddies in Shit Liver! The line up was Bad Back, Shit Liver, and us (AlgomA) and we played in the basement of Shit Castle!! (Shit Liver's house). As always, It was a killer fucking time hanging out and playing with Shit Liver! They are a killer Deathgrind band originally from Sault Ste. Marie as well... horns up to those boyz!! haha

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? We all contribute to writing the songs. We all have ideas for riffs, and then when we are jamming, the music comes together and we can decide what we think works or not.  So far, Darby and I, have been the main lyric writers for the band, but that's not set it stone by any means.

Who has the best sense of humor in the band? It's hard to say who has the best sense of humor because we are all a bunch of pretty funny bastards!! haha

What genre do you feel you are? I feel like we are mainly slow sludge metal, with a lot of noise rock, stoner rock and doom metal influence that bleeds through at times!

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? We picked this sludge/doom genre because we all love to play heavy slow down-tuned music. We love bands like Eyehategod, Sunn o))), The Melvins, Electric Wizard, Boris and Hooded Menace.

With AlgomA we wanted to be agonizingly slow at times and write about really depressing shit! We write about a lot of death, despair, suffering and sad scenarios, but we are open to writing about anything that is strange, weird or disturbing.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We mainly just write our own material.  So far, we have not played any cover songs at all.  We are not opposed to doing covers, and we have a few songs picked out that we might cover at some point, but for now we've only played our own songs.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? Yes! We have one album out so far! Our debut full length album "Reclaimed by the Forest" was released through Dead Beat Media on Oct. 8th 2014!

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Yes, we do have clips on YouTube! We have our own YouTube channel!!

We've uploaded some Promo vids for shows that we've played and we also have some clips of us playing live at different shows as well! You can find our channel here: https://www.youtube.com/AlgomA62

How old are you?/What got you started in music? We are all in our early to mid 30's. We all have a great passion for music, and we have been big music fans since we were kids. I think we got started in music from getting into punk rock. We all played in punk rocks bands as teenagers... and everything thing just snowballed from there.

At what age did you start playing? How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? We all started playing in bands when we were teenagers in high school. Wow that's going back really far! For myself I guess I was around 15 when I was first on stage! haha  and I guess the other guys would have been around that age too when they first stepped on stage!! Probably playing in some long forgotten punk bands from our youth!

Best/worst gig you've played? All gigs so far have been really great! NO WORST gigs yet! haha. I think our best gigs so far were our first gig, when we played with Soul Killing Female. and our gig that we played with Chronobot. Those two bands rock, and those two shows were at this cool venue that has a projector, so whenever we play there we get to make a weird video to project onto the wall while we play!! Another great gig to mention was playing with The Golers!! that was a highlight! Golers is one of my favorite Canadian Metal bands and they are super awesome guys!!!

What are the plans for the rest of the year? Well, there is only about a month left in the rest of 2014, but through the winter, we plan on getting some recording done and working on writing more songs

Where do you usually play? We usually play small clubs or bars, or all ages venues, at a hall or something. We also play tons of basement shows at Darby's place called Das Bunker and JV's place called Six Two Oh! Basement shows are always killer! it's always a ton of fun and total mayhem! The pits are always killer! haha. We've also played a few metal/punk fests. and we hope to play some more fests in the future.

We have played a lot of local gigs, But we also love touring and playing out of town!

How do you get psyched up for a gig? Getting psyched for a show usually involves some beers and a few tokes haha! Playing our music always gets us hyped up!

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? I think we get inspiration from both old and newer bands. We listen to lots of older bands but most of those bands are still putting out new albums. We take inspiration from a lot different places besides just bands, like films, art, and everyday life....everyday life is very depressing y'know haha!

What's the first step when making a new song? The first step to writing a new song is coming up with a great riff! It's all about the riffs, and then everything else comes together!

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? I don't really care about the downloading of music, people are going to do it whether I like it our not.  There will still be music lovers and collectors out there that will buy albums, or even buy digital copies for their mp3 players. We're not going to be able to stop it, so I guess we've got to live with it! heh

What would be your dreams for the band? We have a lot of dreams, but off hand, I think our biggest dream would be to share the stage or do a split with Eyehategod!

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? We all listen to a wide variety of music and bands. We all love heavy music, punk rock, alternative, noise rock. etc.

I personally love metal, like death metal, thrash, grind, doom, sludge. but I also love indie rock, alternative and punk rock as well. Some bands I listen to are the Kittens, The Melvins, Eric's Trip, Ween, Hooded Menace and Electric Wizard!! and tons more, too many to mention! haha

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? I think the only thing we really fear on stage is just that there is going to be some kind of technical fuck up with the equipment.

Have you been in any other bands? Yes, we have all been in a bunch of different bands through the years. Jamie is playing in a heavy grunge band called Bad Back. Darby is currently working on a grind project called Scalpel Fight. and back in the late 90's Darby and I used to be in BeeFMouTH, a noise rock band.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? Darby is a writer, JV is a music teacher, and I operate a crane at a steel mill.

What would you do if there was no music? We would all go completely insane! haha

How important are your fans? I think fans are very important! We really appreciate all the fans of our music and all of the support they give us!! We need a lot of fans to spread the sludge apocalypse of AlgomA. haha! But really though, its great to see the feedback from fans and see them enjoying the music we write!

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? I think a funny and memorable thing that a fan has done is when Frodo, the drummer from The Muff Huffers (punk band from North Bay, ON) painted an AlgomA logo on his hat. He sent us a pic of himself wearing the hat and he had a cigarette up his nose while drinking a beer. hahaha! The pic is up on our AlgomA facebook page!

How often do you rehearse? We try to rehearse at least once a week or so if we can, but It all depends if we have an upcoming show or not, then we try to squeeze in a few more jams.

Where do you rehearse? We usually rehearse at Six Two Oh! (JV's house) in the Sault, or Das Bunker (Darby's basement) out in Garden River.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Right now I'm loving one of our newer songs called "The Electric Fence" We still need to record this new one! We'll be working on that soon. It's a real headbanger! The other song I like at the moment is "Failed Stunt Fatality" another crushing new one that needs to be recorded, hopefully this winter!

What do you feel is the best live band you've seen? For myself I would say The Melvins! Such a legendary band, they have been around for years and are still make new music all the time, and they have never sold out!

Do you have any webpages?

Yes, we have webpages! haha

Describe your show, visually and musically Well musically it's total sonic ear destruction! haha Lots of screaming feedback and heavy tunes!!

Visually you'll see three guys playing there guts out! and that's about it! No frills, no fire show, no fancy spandex!

What advice would you like to give other bands? All the advice we can give to other bands, is just play what you love and make sure you are enjoying yourself!

Tell us about upcoming gigs and why we should be at them? As of right now, this winter (2014/2015), we are focusing on writing and recording more music. So there is no gigs planned yet!

But we plan on playing and touring again next spring! So keep your eyes peeled for more shows! Everyone who loves loud heavy music and wants to get there head crushed in by some heavy doom/sludge should definitely be there!
