interview with Maggot Farm

What´s the name of your band? Maggot Farm
How was the band formed?
Me (Jørn, drummer) and Øyvind (guitarplayer) have known eachother since we were 7-8 years old, but it wasn't before we were 15 when Øyvind bought a guitar we started to jam in my basement. 2 years later Erik (bassguitar/vocals)) joined, and 3 years after that we got out permanent lead-singer Harald.
Can you tell about your band? Maggot Farm is a very intense band who does whatever we want with our music and don't care when people give us shit.
Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band?
Jørn (drums), Harald (vocals) and Øyvind (guitar) are from a small place in Norway called Fetsund. It's about 30 minutes outside Oslo. Erik (bass) is from a place called Lørenskog which is right outside Oslo.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? At first we just wanted to cover some Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Motörhead in my basement, but soon we started writing our own songs and played gigs. Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? We are a sort of mix between thrash/groove metal and stoner rock. We used to refer to our music as DeathGroove BlackThrash, but it wasn't quite accurate.
Where was your first gig? At a local school disco. We played 2 songs; God Save The Queen by Sex Pistols and our own song, Arrival of the Maggots
Where was the latest gig? At Skuret, a pub in Oslo. It went quite well. We played with a norwegian band called Bloodcargo, and the swedish band Black Cyclone.
Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics?
Øyvind writes most of the riffs, with some input by the rest of us. Then Harald writes the lyrics (again with some input from us) but Erik and Jørn has also written lyrics on their own.
Who has the best sense of humor in the band?
No-one. Everyone in the band has the worst sense of humor.
What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? The good thing about Maggot Farm is that our personalites go so good together, and that helps with the playing. The bad thing is that we're maybe a little bit "lazy" or that we take some time to get things done at first.
Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about?
I don't know, playing metal just felt natural. Our songs covers a variety of topics, like war, drinking, diseases, insanity, zombies etc.
Do you write your own material or mainly covers?
We write our own songs, but often play some covers live.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? We made a very crappy demo in 2008 with me (Jørn) on vocals. It was only made in 20 copies (thankfully). We are currently working on our debut album, but don't know when it will be finished.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Yes, just check out our channel youtube.com/maggotfarmofficial

How old are you?/What got you started in music? We are 24 to 26 years old.
At what age did you start playing? Early teens, around 12-13-14
How old were you guys when you first stood on stage?
 15

What year was the band started? 2006

Best/worst gig you've played? The best gig has to be maybe when we played at the legendary Elm Street Rock Cafe in Oslo, or at John Dee in Oslo. The worst gig has to be one of our early ones, can't remember any specific.
What places will you be playing in in the imidate future?
We don't have any gigs planned right now, but people can check our facebookpage for updates.
Where have you played from then till now?
We have played mostly in Oslo, Lillestrøm, Drammen, Jessheim etc.
Witch band is the best you´ve seen? Overkill in Oslo last years was pretty good. Also Iron Maiden numerous times.
Is it always the same songs live? We try to switch the setlist from concert to concert, but there's always some songs we feel we have to play.

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? Not yet, but someday
How big crowds do you usually play for? Usually around 40 to 60 people. I think our biggest crowd was somewhere between 150-200 people.
What are the plans for the rest of the year? Get some more work in studio for our album.
Where do you usually play?
Pubs, youth clubs, gardens

How do you get psyched up for a gig? We usually have some beer and relax.

What are your goals with your music? The dream is of course to make enough money so we don't have to do anything else, but that's almost impossible today. We just want to play for as long as we're able to.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? Musically older bands provide a huge inspiration, but you could also learn something from younger bands.

What's the first step when making a new song? Having an idea, I guess
How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums?
It's something you just have to accept, because it's not going away. It's important to adapt to it, because it essentially makes your music more available for people all over the world.

What would be your dreams for the band? Play concerts in other countries besides Norway.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? Almost everything from death metal to old-school funk and hip-hop, movie soundtracks and electronica. I used to only listen to metal, but that get's kinda boring after a while.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? Losing a drumstick or breaking something. Basically equipment malfunctions.

Have you been part of any other projects? Put together, the members of Maggot Farm has participated in abou 20-30 different bands.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? Jørn works in a video store, Erik at a grocery store, Harald works at a storage and Øyvind works in tv-productions.

What would you do if there was no music? Be bored.

How important are your fans? Very important, because they take the time to come see our concerts.

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? A girl once made a t-shirt with our faces on it. That was pretty cool.
How often do you rehearse? Once a week.

Where do you rehearse? Inthe basement of a theater in Lillestrøm.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? The Ballad of Joey G and Honey, I'm Going To Dizzyland

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? The love of music, and the joy you get when you perform songs that you've made yourself.

Do you have any webpages?

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Treat your music with respect and take it seriously, but don't act like a rock star when you only get 20 people into a shitty bar.
Describe your show, visually and musically A lot of energy and loud noises. A lot of sweat and hair. Occasional mosh-pits.

How do you view the musicindurty of today? It's mostly about autotune, good looks and schock value. All of which we lack.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Getting people to come to your concerts, especially in the weekend when 100 other events are happening.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs? Best: cheap beer for the band. Worst: too much cheap beer.
Tell us about upcomming gigs and why we should be at them?
We deliver a lot of energy and a no-nonsense attitude, plus some quite catchy metal-songs.
How would you describe your sound in one sentence
 Loud and fast Norwegian chaos.
