interview with Meat Devourer

What´s the name of your band? Meat Devourer

How was the band formed? The band was formed as a side project, but became soon more important to all of us!

Can you tell about your band? The Band was formed in 2009 with three members (Chuck Putzer – Guitar, Fabian Oberhofer – Drums and Rene Gerstgrasser – Bass). We played some shows released a demo CD and after 4 years our first full-length was recorded. In the summer of 2014 the bassist left the band, but Meat Devourer was continued anyway.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We are both from Naturns (small town in Southtyrol, Italy)

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? We just wanted to play a harder sound, with more technical riffing and slams. We just wanted to have some fun and play the music we love.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? Some people think the riffing is similar to some newer Dying Fetus – style but with more brutal death influences. We play kind of a technical-slam-death-metal, if you want to describe it like that.

Where was your first gig? In our home town Naturns.

Where was the latest gig? In Tannheim (Germany) at Egelsee Death Fest.

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? We both write them together, but the lyrics are all written by me (Chuck).

Who has the best since of humor in the band? I think that we are both childish bastards and have a lot of fun, doesn’t matter where or with who.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? We just started playing and now it sounds like it sound. We both like it, because it never gets boring, you can bring everything you want into it. The songs usually are about political topics, hate against capitalism, racism, fascism and every kind of this bullshit.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? Own material.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Just search for Meat Devourer, there are music videos, the whole album and studio diaries.

How old are you?/What got you started in music? I am 19 years old and started with 10 years in a punk-rock band.

Best/worst gig you've played? We had a show almost 4 years ago on a friend’s birthday and we were totally drunk, so it wasn’t quite a good show.

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? I would love to play at Obscene Extreme and NRW-Deathfest.

Where have you played from then till now? We played a lot of shows in Italy, Germany, Austria and once in Czech Republic.

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? Dying Fetus for sure, but also bands like Korpse from Holland or Sick.

How do you get psyched up for a gig? Taking the guitar and play some warm-up-techniques.

What are your goals with your music? Having fun and hoping that a lot of people have fun with us.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? I personally don’t think that it depends on the time, or the style of the band. I can get inspired by every band, if the band is doing their job with passion and dedication. Right at the moment I am inspired by a lot of more modern bands.

What are your sources of inspiration? I listen to bands of different styles even if it’s hardcore or something else. If I’m pushed by other music I am able to write or create my own.

What's the first step when making a new song? Normally I take the guitar, start jamming around and try to get a kind of structure in the riffs.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? I think downloading nowadays is normal for nearly everyone. But if I like the band or I am on a concert when a good band plays live, I show them my support and buy a shirt, their CD or something else. I think this kind of support is very important in our scene and also really important for the bands.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? I listen to a lot of different styles of music. If I’m listening to Death-Metal or Brutal-Death-Metal I love bands like Dying Fetus, Devourment, Cerebral Incubation, Visceral Disgorge, Acranius, Sick, Korpse…But I love also listening to Hardcore-Bands like Wisdom in Chains, Terror…

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? I don’t think that I’m afraid of something directly, but it wouldn’t be cool if your amp blows up, for example.

How important are your fans? There isn’t something more important. Support is all this music is about.

How often do you rehearse? Once a week usually.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Erected by blood and Return of the carnivore.

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? We don’t try to make a living, would be cool if that could work, but I don’t think that this would be possible. We keep us motivated with fun, passion and nice people we meet.

Do you have any webpages? Facebook only.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs? Clubs are the best. Smaller places, more chaos, better sound, more fun.

How would you describe your sound in one sentenceTechnical riffing that gets broken by slams and slower parts.
