interview with Foible instinct

What´s the name of your band?Foible instinct.  Don't know how we choose this name, but one day Zhenya came and show us some names he invent. He played video games all night so was dozy on work and Zhenya was sleepy, we like that one very much.)

How was the band formed?First in early 2006 we start to play deathmetal with Zhenya and Andrew, but than that band split-up, so we take Sasha as second guitarist and start new project. We play very bad, but want to make some thrash/ death stuff, then one time at the new Years eve we was at Sasha's home celebrating and listening to Terrorizer's "World Downfall' and Napalm Death's "Noise for music sake" albums. Andrew say "you know, there is not grindcore bands in Ukrainę, let's be first". Then Vlad came on bass with all his crust influences, so that is the story.

Can you tell about your band? Well, there is 4 members now: me on drums, Zhenya - vocals, Andrew - guitar, Sasha - bass (after Vlad leftband in 2011).

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band?We are all from Kyiv, except Andrew, who came from Omsk ( Russia). Andrew and Sasha writing music in our band, Zhenya writing texts and negotiates about shows and make trades, i negotiates wiyh labels, that is all i think.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started?We want to be the first band who make oldschool grindcore in Ukrainę that time. but after few years we understand that all our stuff is some kind of metal with peace of punk of course)

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you?Last releases is midtempo grindcore with dirty sound, if we play 10 minutes, there is 11 songs In our setlist.

Where was your first gig?It was closed gig in Vasilkov city near Kyiv, at september 27, 2007. With such bands as Humble Opinion, Bread'n'Battery, Apleshout and And We Burn.

Where was the latest gig?Latest was in club rainbow in Kyiv with 3 local thrash bands: BSxBC, Rust Rain, Zombie Attack.

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? All we make music, Sasha and Andrew write some riffs, then on rehearsal we play it with drums searching for best way to play the songs. Zhenya write lyrics then, and we ready for studio working/

Who has the best sence of humor in the band?Of course it is Zhenya

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are?The good thing is that we play what we whant and we all are old friends, the bad is finance part, everytime searching for a money for recordings.

Ofcourse we feel ourselves llike grindcore band.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about?Like i said above we start searching ouselves in this style becourse of noone done it before us in Ukraine. We like to easyplaying riffs that sounds fast and heavy.Our songs about social problem, some about alcohol and sport.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers?We play mainly our own stuff, with some covers on live shows.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they?We have just one LP called "age of machines" unfortunately it was jast internet release.

Do you have any clips on YouTube?Yeah we have one. It's our official video on the "Age of Machines" song, it was shown on ukrainian musician Chanel A-One.

How old are you?/What got you started in music?We play for 7 years.

At what age did you start playing? I start studying while i was 15.

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage?Well, me was 19, andrew was 20, sasha was 21 and jenya was 23.

What year was the band started?We're were formed in the end of 2006.

Best/worst gig you've played?We have many good gigs, our show on Neformat fest 2014 for example, we realy improve quality of our technique, so our gigs start to be good. And worst was in Termopil because of organization. one of the worst our gigs was on Neformat fest 2010, we were very drink and play very bad, watch GG allin cover on YouTube to feel that.

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future?In Kyiv with Bestial Vomit in july and in Zaporizhzhia on Southern Madness fest in september that's all now.

Where have you played from then till now?We player ofcourse in Kyiv, Vasilkov, Ukrainka, Kharkiv, Uzhorod, Lviv, Termopil, Zaporizhzhia, Chernogiv, Sumy, Zhytomir, Khmelnitski and st. Petersburgs (urssia)

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? For me it is Suffocation and Napalm Death.

Is it always the same songs live?No, we always change our set while writing new songs.

What has been the best/most promising gig so far?Waiting for Summer Maddness fest, many great bands in good city.

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now?No, we never had been in tour.

How big crowds do you usually play for?20-40 people, sometime less, sometime more.

What are the plans for the rest of the year?I hope we'l make new album this year, working on new stuff now. Also have ready new stuff for a split.

Where do you usually play?Most of our shows we play in Kyiv.

How do you get psyched up for a gig?Well, always i feel some nervous before gig, till i play first note, then all is ok.

What are your goals with your music?The main goal is to develope our scene and embreathe young musicians to play grindcore.

When did you decide to go all in for the music?I don't know if every fi members go all in for music, all we have own lifes and own problems gry to consolidate it it's hard, but we have no choise.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern?We fans of older bands like ND, Nasum or Defecation but we cannot ignore modern scene with all these Death Toll 80k and other, the same things with styles, of course our inspirations it is not only grind and punk bands.

What are your sources of inspiration?Many bands, like i said above it's ND, Terrorizer, Unseen Terror, Nasum, In Disgust, Magrudergrind, Wormro, etc.

What's the first step when making a new song?Guys bring new riffs on rehearsal (they devise it at home) then we play it with drum beats and write lyrics.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums?We do it all the time. there is a lot of free iformation on ukrainian hosts. Ofcourse it's great if you bying album after downloading, but i always do it on the gigs. I think people must feel free for doing that, if you want to support band do as your consience said. We'd love if thousands people upload our stuff to their players for free. It helps popularisation for thus bands like ours.

What would be your dreams for the band? I think make european tour, play on the obscene extreme, make vinyl.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? I'm fan od rock bands such as Queen, led Zeppelin. Like metal bands - Slayer, Metallica, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Immortal, punk - Bad Brains, Deadkennedys. Also love alton ellis reggae, love to listen run DMC, fan of jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. Also like Naked City very much. There is a lot od interesting thinks we can find in all music genres.

What do you hold most dear? My gilffiend, brother, parents, friends and my bands.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? We at war now, what can be worse?

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? I don't know, jast do my best thats all, there is no place for fear on stage.

Have you been part of any other projects? Yeah, i play in Getcold and Deathbiter with Andrew and Vlad( ex-FxI bassist), in Bomg (doom) also in Uzhgorod i play in Skruta

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? I work as a courier,Zhenya is game designer, Andrew works for ukrainian olympic committee, Sasha works on internet media shop.

What would you do if there was no music? Sounds horrible for me. I’m glad that music exist. Don't mind what i'll do.

How important are your fans? Very Important,  we'll make over music if there is even a couple of people who like it.

How often do you rehearse? Just one time a week.

Where do you rehearse? At great rehearsal room and studio called Evergreen in Kyiv. It belongs to the Bomg band.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Two new songs we just wrote with Andrew yesterday on last rehearsal)

What do you feel is the best live band you've seen? Human Error the crazy guys from Hungary

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? The same thing that drive someone gone fishing every weeks - we enjoy it. We like playing live shows, working at studios, keep in touch with other musicians, we saw and play with many great bands from other countries. All this underground atmosphere drives us!

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Do all the things by yourself. Make a lot of recordings, till your band splits up.

Would you like to add anything else? Try to your musician skills not only on the rehearsals.

Describe your show, visually and musically I would be happy if I could see our show from the fan zone. but it's never happened. New that we sounds like a wall of noise, hope we look dinamicly to. Watch our videos, but I'm sure live shows looks different.

How do you view the musicindurty of today? Music industry gives people all they want, for money of course. It works for all times. I'm not following that things.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? For us money for rehearsals, recordings, releases, there's few places in kyiv where you can make a grindcore gigs with very bad circs.  visas it's a problem for us to.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs? Sound managers.

Tell us about upcomming gigs and why we should be at them? Well, there's some good fest in Ukraine this summer - btsff near zhytomyr, electric meadow fest near lviv, southern madness fest in zaporizhzhia. All this fest unite many good bands all over Ukraine. 

How would you describe your sound in one sentence Impacting and noisy.

What was one of the most quarrelsome times for you in the band? 3 years when I didn't drink alcohol.

Whats your Pre-show ritual? There's no ritual, maybe just bottle of bear, some times other drink.
