interview with Muspelheim

What´s the name of your band? Muspelheim

How was the band formed? It was formed in the summer of 2012 by Berstuk (Jake O'Malley) and Svetovid (James Harris). We both had a love for extreme music like death metal, black metal, grindcore, etc. We felt that it was about time that we began to write and play our own music.

Can you tell about your band? We are four musicians who have a common interest in the genre black metal and write music that we enjoy.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We are all from Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, a small town outside of Scranton. The current lineup: Jake O'Malley - drums, James Harris - guitar, David Galaydick - guitar, and Jake Black - bass guitar.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? To make music we enjoy.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? We play a style of black metal that we like to think is unique to us but we also have influences such as Drudkh, Peste Noire, and the classics like Mayhem and Burzum.

Where was your first gig? We are not at the point to play gigs at the moment. We are busy writing and recording new music for our upcoming debut release.

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? We all contribute in the writing process as we believe this band is a collective of all our musical ideas.

Who has the best since of humor in the band? We all like to have a good time but understand when we have to be serious.

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? Everything is good with the band except for the fact that we haven't had enough free time recently to be able to work on new things do to college, high school, work, women, working with women, sleeping, eating, breathing, etc.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? We love black metal. Our songs are about many things including nature, paganism, and mysticism.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? Original material is the most important part of being in a band.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? We are currently in the process of recording a new release and it is expected to be released in early 2015.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Not that we know of.

How old are you?/What got you started in music? James and Jake are 17 years old, Jake Black is 20, and David is 19. We've always loved music.

What year was the band started? The summer of 2012.

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? For James - Fleshgod Apocalypse, Jake O - Morbid Angel. The others are not with us at the moment do to college as we said before.

Is it always the same songs live? When we do play live we usually play based upon whatever we feel like playing.

What has been the best/most promising gig so far? The only "gig" we have ever played was for a small group of people in someone's house.

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? Unfortunately not. It is hard to get shows in Clarks Summit (aka Pop punk ska-ville) being a black metal band. We had one large gig planned once but the organizer screwed us for some sub par ska punk bands.

How big crowds do you usually play for? Not big at all.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? Recording recording recording

Where do you usually play? In Jake O'Malley's basement.

How do you get psyched up for a gig? Drugs. (Joking. We rehearse like most other bands.)

What are your goals with your music? To make great music and express ourselves through it.

When did you decide to go all in for the music? The day we were born.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? It doesn't matter. We get inspiration from both.

What are your sources of inspiration? Music, literature, and music.

What's the first step when making a new song? We pick up a guitar and play what comes to our minds.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? We don't care. We understand why some people like to download music because we are broke as well. We do prefer to buy albums though. David is against downloading completely but the rest of us don't care.

What would be your dreams for the band?  Releasing an album that we enjoy as well as our fans.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? Extreme metal - Peste Noire, Burzum, Drudkh, Rotting Christ, etc.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? Not being able to continue with the band.

What songs and what years were they released? We have a plethora of songs at the moment. We won't give away the names until the album is released.

Have you been part of any other projects? Jake O'Malley and James Harris both have solo projects in the works, a noise band called Horse Bones Made for My Pleasure, and a death metal band called Vile Decimation. Jake Black is in a death metal band called Hallucination and has a funeral doom solo project. David is very busy with college.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? School work and jobs.

What would you do if there was no music? Invent music.

How important are your fans? What fans? ;-) The fans are the blood flowing in the veins of Muspelheim.

How often do you rehearse? We rehearse as often as possible but are currently usually only able to rehearse about once or twice a week.

Where do you rehearse? Jake O'Malley's basement.

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Always write music that you would like yourself.

How do you view the musicindurty of today? It sucks.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Managing time (at least for us).

Tell us about upcomming gigs and why we should be at them? Everyone should come to our gigs because even if they don't enjoy the music I'm sure they won't regret coming.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence Unique.

What was one of the most quarrelsome times for you in the band? Right now because we are all so busy and have an album to record.

Whats your Pre-show ritual? Wake up, use the toilet, brush our teeth, sit around for a little while, and rehearse.

Do you have anything to add? We're sorry our answers aren't very long as we are very busy and did this in a hurry, I hope it did provide at least some insight into Muspleheim. As the great Olve on the Egg once said, "The lovely stench of an egg fart."
