interview with Bastard Son

Have any of you played in other bands? Music is our religion, some worship a wider variety
How is it that you started playing music? I really don't know how anyone wouldn't want to play music, it's the universal bond!
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Jeff Higgins/Guitar - Dan Harrington/Guitar - Ty Clements/Drums - James Flint/Bass and myself Chad Parsons/Vocals
We're all in our early forties except for the thunder, he's a dozen years younger.
Have you had other previous members? Yes. I replaced a good friend of ours Mr. Jason Kurz on vocals.
He wrote and sang on the first Bastard Son release Betraying Us All
Did you make music even when you were young? Most of us have been playing since childhood. In a group sense we started writing together in early highschool.
Where are you from? We're all from Peterborough Ontario, Canada, just north of Toronto..
What year did the band form? 2011
What's your style of genre? Bastard Son is Extreme Metal. If I could put a title on it I would call it Anger Metal.. We generally fit into the Death Metal genre on account of my vocals.
What inspires you? For Bastard Son it's more like what pisses you off when it comes to writing. Music wise it's that old heavy groove with some steady formula.
How often and where do you reherse? We generally jam once a week unless we're in training camp for some shows or studio. We have a cool ass jam room out in the sticks.. Somewhat of horror movie feel when you pull in the lot.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? More promoters and other bands at this point.. Booking agents are welcome to contact us!
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? For our next release we're thinking on shopping around.. Any labels interested in Bastard Son would be something to consider.
What are your songs about?Like I mentioned above, the over all theme of the band is we're fucking pissed off at the world.  Everything is related to anger in one way or another.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics?
Higgins is our riff machine.. Harrington will collaborate...Ty will create the beat...
James thickens it up...I write the lyrics and vocal patterns.
Have you done any covers live? The only cover we do live is from our old band 20 years ago.. That song is also on our album Devils Mask titled "Oh So Pieceful"
What language do you sing in? At this point and time it has all been English..
What ages are most of your concert attendants? The metal scene has always been typically a younger crowd (energy/stamina) I do find though we get a lot of an older crowd into 90's Death Metal.
Gigs? We've been putting together some shows for the fall in and around Peterborough and Toronto.. Ontario Deathfest coming up Oct 8,9,10 in Toronto.. https://www.facebook.com/events/396334340556482/
Where can people buy your merchandise?
We've had merch for sale since the inception..T-shirts, stickers, patches, and of course Cds.. You can purchase online at www.bastardson.bandcamp.com or send us at message on facebook https://www.facebook.com/BastardSonDeathmetal
or at [email protected]

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? I'm all for all of it.. However the music is being heard right on!

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? I think it's easier for fans to access the tunes which is great.. That being said a lot are getting it for free..It's always been about the music not the cash for us, thus playing Extreme Metal.. You need the generate cash for a band  to tour and pay for all your album and promo shight. Anyone who wants to be a rock star should be fucking killed. It nothing but helps us I think.. Kids in shity countries that couldn't get the tunes before can now..Creating more fans and spreading our tunes.Even if they are getting it for free..

What do you think of my work? We all appreciate your work a lot.. I know I speak for a lot of bands who appreciate cats like yourself taking your time for the love of Metal.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Every interview is more interest towards the band opening doors to new listeners and potential fans..like this one straight outta Fuckin Sweden!!
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Honestly when looking for musical inspiration it could come form anywhere. I think we've been involved in Metal since it's early inception so we've kinda evolved with it rather aspired from it.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Always remember why you started playing and all your greatest moments. Stay true to your friends and band mates and live in the present.. Practice might not make perfect, but you'll be on your way. Keep your ego in check, the talent in this world in unbelievable and you have an opportunity to learn from it all..You're not fucking special

How do you get psyched for a gig? Hahaha I am naturally ready to go all the time.. It's more like containing it in a regular day.. We always check out all the bands on whatever bill we play. Depending on our spot it's always a good way to get heavied up.

Do you have any new material? Yes we do and we'll be heading back to BoneGrinder Records in the new year to begin tracking our new album.. This will be our third album working with Robbie Boyd at BoneGrinder in Peterborough..
