interview with Funest

Have any of you played in other bands? Sure, all of us played or still plays in others bands,I currently play in a thrash band always as drummer,M. played bass and guitars in other bands, same for E. and H.S.
How is it that you started playing music?
Listening music, going to gigs and watching other bands with wich we grew up play. We want to do our own part as those bands made which in turn, and maybe to be an inspiration for someone in the future.

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
D. – drums, 26 years old
M. - guitars and vocals, 27 years old
E. – bass, 38 years old
H.S. – guitars, 33 years old

Have you had other previous members? Yeah we had two guitarists in the past, but they have been into the line-up for a short time or just as live show session members, then they left the band also because they had their projects to carry on as well.
Did you make music even when you were young?
Well,I started play drums at the age of 18,with my first death metal band, and same for the other members with their respective instruments and bands, but I suppose that some of them started earlier, like 16 or 17 years old or something like that.

Where are you from? I’m from Milan,M. is from Palermo,Sicily,E. is from Quito,Ecuador and H.S. is from Biella,a city in Piedmont, not far from Turin.

What year did the band form? We officially formed in winter of 2012.

What's your style of genre? Death metal,in the Swedish manner,in the vein of Entombed,Dismember,Grave…Boss HM-2 addicted!

What inspires you? Blasphemy, death, sorrow, pain, corpses and alcohol abuse.

How often and where do you reherse?
Well we play as long as we need,it depends on what we’re gonna practice, the setlist for an upcoming show or new songs or improvise new stuff,we take the required time for everything.
We have setted up a garage as “rehearsal room” with drums, amplifier, speakers and so on,and there is where we rehearse with Funest and with the other bands.

How have you developed since you started with the music? Well,we aim to keep our style the same as possible, but we’re now trying to create a sound that would be the result of mixing the classic Swedish sound with the American one and the first results are promising.

Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Not so many,we all spend the most of the time at work,so the band is our main activity.

Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? Currently not,and we’re not going to seek for any at the moment.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We’re looking for a label interested to print the 12” vinyl version of “Desecrating Obscurity”.
What made you decide to make this music?
The total and unconditional love for this genre, for us is not only a matter of music,is a lifestyle,or at least for me.

What are your songs about? Anti-christianity/religion mainly, but also pain, death, gore and sexual perversions.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? M. is the main composer for what concern the music,I take care of the lyrics generally.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Usually first comes the music, then the lyrics, but I use to write the lyrics separately on my own,I write down whatever comes to my mind, then we fit the lyrics into the song together during the songwriting process.

Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Not in a particular one,we usually compose when we are jamming together or at home by our own, then we share our ideas each other, then we start to build the song.

Have you done any covers live? We played a couple of times Pagan Saviour of Autopsy, only this one until now,but we’re planning a new one.

What language do you sing in? English.

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We don’t know honestly, the least I think 10,the most around 100.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? I suppose between 18 and 50. Anyone who likes our music is welcome at our shows, the age doesn’t matter and we don’t care about that.

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? Well,we try to change setlist order each time, but the songs for now are the same, lately we’ll put into some new songs.

Do you have a regular place you play live often? Not necessarily,we play wherever and for anyone want us at their show,if the premises are acceptable of course.

What was your first gig like? Short but killer! The line up was composed by me (D.),M. and E., our first bass player who left the band afterwards. The venue was rather crowded although it was pretty narrow, and we were a bit nervous because we didn’t expect so many people and was the first time on stage for us,but in the end everything went well.

What was your latest gig? Was the last November,I played with both my bands,Funest and Torment (my other band, thrash metal),pretty cool gig,not one of the best anyway.

Have have you played live this year? We made no live shows in 2015 because we have been focused on writing new stuff, but within 2016 we’ll play somewhere for sure.

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We don’t know, our only plan is to put out some new stuff, then we will see what will happen.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We started around last February,in the beginning we printed some shirts, afterwards we made patches and stickers, and we’re planning to release the vinyl version of “Desecrating Obscurity” who has been initially released in CD by Memento Mori.
Where can people buy your merchandise?

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? I think they should do both. Youtbe and streaming in general nowadays allows you to know bands who until yesterday were unknown and download music is ok but in my opinion if you really want to support a band you must buy their stuff.

How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? The music industry, lke every industry, cares only about one thing: money. I hope that those labels who promote shitty and trendy bands, caring only to produce profit will soon go out of business, that’s all.
What do you think of my work?
You make a good job, really appreciate it,this is a good way to show support to the bands.

How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? In my opinion when music begins to be a business,it ends to be music. I make music for passion, because I love it,not for a salary or a wage,I have a job for that, like all my bandmates. We don’t really love to make interviews, but if it helps to let us know by other people around the world, well…ok?

Do you have any role models or idols? Anyone who is able to inspire us can be a model, but not an idol, because idols must be venerated and we don’t venerate nothing and none.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today?
Well,in our case the main influences comes from the great bands of the 80’s and 90’s,but there are few bands who are in the current scene that for us represent an influence or a model to follow, for example Interment and Hail of Bullets.

What have been your biggest obstacles? Definitely was to keep a regular line-up,with stable dedicated members, able to focus only on our project, who knows well the genre and with good skills with the instruments.

How do you get psyched for a gig? Drinking beer ahaha

Do you have any new material? Yes,we currently are working on three new songs and soon we’ll hit the studio.

What are your web sites?

How can people reach you? By email ([email protected]) or by our Facebook page.

What are your plans for the future? Finish to compose the new stuff and maybe release an EP or a split,we still have to decide about that.

Do you have something to add? Thanks for the interview,we salute all the Swedish maniacs who supports us,hoping to play very soon in Sweden…Skål!
