interview with Terror Cósmico

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes, we have played in several bands before Terror Cósmico, one is Sour Soul a rock/pop funky sounding band that isn´t that much active anymore, and we try to collaborate with as much music as its possible
How is it that you started playing music? We both started arround the age of 15 playing in cover bands in highschool. Little by little taking it more seriously and then satrting playing original music.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Javier Alejandre - Guitar
Nicolas Silveira - Drums
Have you had other previous members? No, this is the original formation of the band
Did you make music even when you were young? Yes, we´ve always liked making music, no matter what kind is it.
Where are you from? Mexico City
What year did the band form? 2012
What's your style of genre? We define it as instrumental/experimental/doom
What inspires you? Human emotions basically, specially fear, loss and being overwhelmed
How often and where do you reherse? It depends, usually once or twice a week in the house we live in, amongst other 5 musicians living and working in the house.
How have you developed since you started with the music? We have been taking it everytime more seriously and we´ve become more ambicious with the songwriting. We want to take our music to the next level (whatever that may mean)
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Yes, but they remain being musical interests, we some times give private lessons, and we are involved in other projects like Weedsnake, Jacques Cousteau and other starting bands of our own.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We are not looking for it, but if at some point we found it necessary and some agency is interested in working with us, it could be very helpfull.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Not really, we are working with Concreto Records,a Mexican metal label that has been very supportive. We would love to have a label to distribute our music in other countries and maybe put our albums on vynil.
What made you decide to make this music? Just the love of being in the process of discovering the sounds we like, it started very natural, is a combination of a lot of the music we love.
What are your songs about? Mainly about human emotions and all that is unknown for us in that matter. Anxiety, sadness, fear, doubt and stuff like that.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? We both do the composing, it usually starts with an idea from the guitar. And there are no lyrics.
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Mainly in the house, that is a great enviroment to create music, because everyone takes it very serious and are very interested about it.
Have you done any covers live? Just one, Baby please don´t leave me from Buddy Guy, a strange version of it.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? It may vary between 60 or 500 depending what kind of show is it.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? I would guess between 22 and 36
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We try to vary the set every show
Do you have a regular place you play live often? There are a couple of venues here in the city that we play regularly.
What was your first gig like? It was almost empty, just 5 people for 4 bands, but very fun.
What was your latest gig? It was the release of our second album "Devorador De Sueños" a free show in a great sounding venue with almost 500 atendants.
Have you had to cancel a gig? No, it has´t happened yet. Not becouse of us at least.
Where have you played live this year? In several states in Mexico, and we will be touring the USA west coast in october.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We want to go for the first time to Europe.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale?¨We started from the first gig. We sell our two albums, a split cd with Vinnum Sabbathi, Weedsnake and El Ahorcado, t-shirts and band patches.
Where can people buy your merchandise? Our two cd´s on Concreto Records via facebook and the rest only on our live shows at the moment.
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? I think it is inevitable, and it has some possitive consecuences and of course some troubles for bands trying to get some money from their music. But is also great having acces to a bunch of music that theres not even edited.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Everything has changed, and it is still changing. I think right now everyone has to create their own way to make it work, and to get their music out in the world. I don´t think there is a formula yet for the modern way of music consumption.
What do you think of my work? I think is great, very detailed and passionate.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? I don´t know, I wasnt thinking about that sincerely.
Do you have any role models or idols? There are a bunch of bands we are inspired by on their way of working and the things they have acomplished, there is a long list. A lot of this bands are from Mexico
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? Both, older bands have more "know how" and experience, but new bands are innovating on the way of promoting their music.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Founding enough time to do everything on our own, booking, management, songwriting, merch. But more than an obstacle its been a process of founding out how to do it more efectively.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Just to keep creating the music that feels right for them and be open to new ways of doing all the work that has to be done in a band. Give priority to songwriting more than any other thing.
Do you have any new material? Our new album was released the last week.
