interview with Colosso

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes we have and most of us still do. Here are the more relevant ones that are involved with Colosso: Holocausto Canibal, W.A.K.O. and Sullen.
How is it that you started playing music? I'm not quite sure about the other guys, but I started playing music as soon as I discovered Nirvana (yes, as lame as it might sound, it's still a great inspiration nowadays for me).
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Currently Colosso is:
André Lourenço - Bass
André Macedo - Vocals
António Carvalho - Guitar
Marcelo Aires - Drums
Max Tomé - Guitar
Have you had other previous members? No, but we just added a new singer, which will record the next album.
Did you make music even when you were young? Sure! At least I did. Ever since I started playing guitar (back when I was 11), I immediately started writing music.
Where are you from? We're all from Portugal. Two guys from Oporto, one guy from Lisbon, one guy from Guimarães and one guy from Braga.
What year did the band form? The band formed in January 2011, back when I started writing the début album "Abrasive Peace".
What's your style of genre? We play Death Metal with some ambient and progressive sections.
What inspires you? Our lives, (in)humanity and also the Nature/Space.
How often and where do you rehearse? We rehearse only for gigs and for recordings, but we keep in touch everyday, trading ideas for new music or ways to develop ourselves and the band.
How have you developed since you started with the music? Well, each and everyone of ourselves practice a lot on their specific instrument, even though we don't rehearse that often. I'm mainly focused in song-writing nowadays, since I got to the conclusion that good song-writing is better than playing a thousand notes per second.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Yes, I like technology and computers a lot, and our singer is opening a barber shop, ehehe
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We're all in favour of booking agencies. They are very useful to help you out with new contacts. That being said, we haven't yet worked with any specific one...
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Maybe... Labels are great if you want to focus on only making music and not worry about the paperwork and all the work of distributing a release. Right now, I'm starting to get tired of "being my own label", so we're thinking of working with a label. A good one, hopefully!
What made you decide to make this music? It's stronger than myself. I get depressed if I don't record, or play guitar, or write music every now and then.
What are your songs about? Life in general, and Humanity.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? I wrote everything on "Abrasive Peace" and "Thallium". But nowadays it's starting to get more cooperative, like a real band should be.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Always with the music!
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Yes, I need time, peace and few noises around, so I can concentrate on what I'm doing.
Have you done any covers live? Not live, but we have recorded a version of "Scentless Apprentice" by Nirvana on our EP "Thallium"
What language do you sing in? English.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? Not sure... we usually only play at fests and they're usually crowded, which is great!
What ages are most of your concert attendants? All ages.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We vary a lot. But we usually always play "Anthem to Chaos".
Do you have a regular place you play live often? No.
What was your first gig like? Was cool. Full house, and lots of great reactions! We prepared ourselves well for that show!
What was your latest gig? Our last gig was at Moita Metal Fest 2015 (one of the biggest metal fests here in Portugal). It was great. We had the opportunity to play with such great bands...
Have you had to cancel a gig? Yes, our very first gig was cancelled once due to personal reasons. But other than that, we never cancelled a show.
Where have you played live this year? Yes, at Moita Metal Fest 2015. But we don't play live that often...
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? Still secret.
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We have been selling merch since the begining. Mainly CDs and T-shirts. You can see what we have for sale at http://music.colossometal.com/merch
Where can people buy your merchandise? On live shows and on that same link: http://music.colossometal.com/merch
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? I don't mind if people download our albums for free. They're available for free anyways at our bandcamp... but I myself like to purchase CDs or pay for the download.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? It has changed a lot, but mainly because it didn't react fast enough. Also, the music industry should have taken advantage of the mp3 format earlier instead of fighting against it...
What do you think of my work? You're doing great, dude!! Keep on rocking!
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Everything helps nowadays, so it will sure spread the word a bit further!
Do you have any role models or idols? No, not currently.
Why do you think that they exist? No. We're all the same.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? I get inspiration from both.
What have been your biggest obstacles? I don't know... tough question... maybe getting a band where each and every member is dedicated enough. That was a tough battle!
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Don't give up on doing what you love!
How do you get psyched for a gig? I get excited, yes, but I like writing and recording songs the most.
Do you have any new material? Yes, we're about to enter studio (in two weeks) to record our next full lenght.
