interview with Coronach

Have any of you played in other bands?
Yes we have all been in a multitude of bands and at some point along the way we have all played with each other.
I (cooper) played with Kevin in a band called Kevlar,  played with Haydn in A Horse Called War and Tom in Becky Jago.
Tom and I actually grew up together and learned are instruments at the same time and started are first ever band Product Of Hate. Kevin and Haydn played in a few bands befor Coronach but you'll have to ask them what there names were.
How is it that you started playing music? We started Coronach because we were board really. Haydn and are founding member David Vickers staryed talking about do a band and needed a drummer so asked me if I'd like to jam ? I did and we wrote a few songs and decided to make a go of it. Kevin was added because he's the best vocalist we knew and his lyrical skills rival anyone's. Sadly David couldn't commit due to work ventures so Tom was added and completed the line up perfectly.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Tom Roberts Guitar. 35
Haydn Morgans Bass. 33
Simon Cooper Drums. 33
Kevin Arrowsmith Vocals.  30 something
Have you had other previous members? David Vickers Guitar
Did you make music even when you were young? Yes we all played with each other when we were young. But not in a hairy handed teenage way.
Where are you from? It's easier to just say East Anglia.
What year did the band form? 2011
What's your style of genre? It's a mix of everything like Tool, Meshuggah, Slayer, Megadeth, Opeth, Gojira and Mastodon.  It would be easier for people to be able to label us but you just can't.  We like to call are self's divers metal.
What inspires you? We take inspiration from everything and anything,  like Bruse Lee once said "If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them".
How often and where do you reherse? Once a week on a Tuesday.
How have you developed since you started with the music? Are music is always evolving and growing with each song we create it's how we do things. Going back to the Diverse metal thing it's what makes Coronach Coronach. We won't settle for just writing in a particular style because it's popular we do it because it's how it happens.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Me and Haydn play rugby for Bury St Edmunds,  Tom enjoys biking and Kevin is a very very busy man.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? In the current climate of music I personally think that a booking agency is the way to go It allows bands to be bands instead of musicians then booking agents then promoter's and then management.  If you do have someone in a band that has the ability to do it and is good at it then there's no problem but bands should chip in and have a say in what's happening and have input because at the end of the day it's your face and your thing there effectively trying to book. It's a team effort
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? I can't say that we are or are not looking, label's ain't the be all and end all of music but they do have benefits as well as drawbacks.  If one came and offered us a fair deal it would defiantly be something we considered but it would have to be a fair offer that benefits both parties fairly and not one that is a dictatorship
What made you decide to make this music? It was a natural progression from all involved that has led us to this point.
What are your songs about? Many things, Kevin is one hell of a story teller and when he picks a topic he creates a masterpiece and never limits himself, he writes with fact and spends alot of time researching the topic of the song and pays attention to detail.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Kevin writes are lyrics but will take and listen to input from the rest of us.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? 100% music
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? No not really we compose are music in a very organic way, it just flows and happens but we never force the issue.  Our songs are ready when there ready and if it takes a week or a year then so be it, it's sometimes frustrating and seams we are ice skating up hill but that's Coronach and that's why are songs sound like they do. When a song is complete we then play it live at are next gig to get a live feel as songs can have a completely different feel live, when this has happened we go back to rehersal and talk about it and change what needs to be changed or leave it be. We tried writing a song to a deadline but it didn't feel right and the end result wasn't right.
Have you done any covers live? Never but that's not saying it won't happen.
What language do you sing in? English.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We always get good numbers into are shows its hard to say really. What's a good number now days ? If you get 10 into a small venu then it's considered a result right but 10 in a massive venu is a disaster.
What ages are most of your concert attendants? With the average price of gigs now days £5 and up and the limited amount of venues willing to entertain a 16+ age show its mostly 20s and above.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We mix it up each gig. There's a few that get picked straight away but for variety we like to mix it around. I personally hate seeing bands who play the same set over and over its just lazy
Do you have a regular place you play live often? Nope we enjoy a good road trip to much
What was your first gig like? We were opening for a band I was playing bass in at the time and we had 3 songs with half finished lyrics so we played are set twice.  It was a humble beginning but ill never forget it
What was your latest gig? It was chaos it was a show in Sheffield,  we got stuck on the motorway and had to endure a traffic jam which went on for an age so we ended up being late  when we arrive the promoter told us to set up and start playing straight away ! 3 songs later we got told to finish are set, we done a 8 hour round  trip to play for 20 minutes........ That's not fun
Have you had to cancel a gig? No never.
Where have you played live this year? Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, Ipswich and Sheffield.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We never plan to play a specific place just any where at any time
When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We don't have any at present
Where can people buy your merchandise? Are stuff is available to download via all the standard places,  iTunes, Amazon, cd baby be we wanted our first offering to be limited in hard copies to make it more sort after. Just Google Coronach Mountain Kings
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? Let's face it everyone has done it. I can only speak for myself here but I think it's a pretty shitty thing to do no matter how you look at it its steeling. look at it in a small scale and it's quite terrible because your taking money directly out of the bands pocket.  If there selling an album for £10 and you download it for free you are decreasing the bands income and denying them a possible chance to make more albums. Most bands finance it's own birth with hard earned money out of there back pocket so it's proper unfair to just take.
How do you think the music industry have changed because of this? Gigs cd s and merch have all gone up, keep steeling stuff that's readily available and people will just charge more where you can't get it for free. If bigger bands ain't getting the cd sales because of downloads there gonna charge gig promoter's more who in turn charge the fan more. It's loose loose.
What do you think of my work? It's very admirable.  Spreading the word of good music via any means possible it's a great thing. We need more people like you.
How do you think and know that this interview will help you in the music business? Who says it will ?  I'd like to think that millions of people will read this interview and book Coronach for loads and loads of gigs and you become a global superstar.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today?
Good question.  It has to be a 50/50 split.
Look to the past and you find some amazing gems and some incredible music but look to the future you see some bands who you hope will rise above and show the world what they can do.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Things that involve a 3rd party.  Putting your faith in a person you have never met and trusting them to do the best for Coronach.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Don't be good be great. Ask opinions from everyone and never rest on your lorrals
How do you get psyched for a gig?
Beer mostly.
Do you have any new material? We are constantly creating new songs
