interview with HEAVY CHAINS

Have any of you played in other bands? We all have had previous projects, myself I went from playing covers, to play on a power metal band, and ended up with Heavy Chains a much more heavier band, with our particular heavy/trash sound

What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?

Diego Acuña (Vocals) 23 years old

David Azofeifa (Guitar) 36 years old

Carlos Azofeifa (Bass guitar) 33 years old, and yes, David's brother

George Barquero (Drums) 34 years old

Albert Hansen (guitar)36 years old

Have you had other previous members? Heavy Chains first started with another vocalist, but didn't get serious until I joined the band, we also had a previous guitarist whose Albert came to replace, his name was David Madrigal, but he ended up leaving the band as he was looking for a different kind of sound we didn't really agree with

Did you make music even when you were young? We have all played music since very young, all of us started playing in garage bands since teenagers, that's why we love music, we love our band and the music we create

Where are you from? Costa Rica(central america)

What year did the band form? 2011

What's your style of genre? Heavy/Trash Metal

What inspires you? Situations around the globe, could be day to day experiences, or events from the past, we like taking experiences or events, and covert them into a songs.

How often and where do you reherse? once every 2 weeks, at David's(1st guitar) place, we've got everything we need there.

How have you developed since you started with the music? We've learned and grown a lot since we first started, we have reinvented our own style moving towards a heavier sound, we have gone through a lot, but there still much more to learn.

Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Yes we are, we are looking for opportunities to promote our music, we feel we have a strong and particular sound, we have a lot to give, we hope for the best.

What made you decide to make this music? We wanted to create something unique, and bring together a lot of different styles and influences , we came up with this project, looking to integrate our favorite parts of heavy metal, trash metal, some progressive influences, clean but strong vocals, and then Heavy Chains was born, we are really proud of what we've done so far , and we know this is just the beginning.

Who does the composing and writes the lyrics?  Most of the songs were composed by David (1st guitar), he created like 75% of the songs before I even joined the band, the when I joined the band 3 years ago, I made mayor changes to the lyrics, and since then we have composed together all new songs.

Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Neither one, we first think of the idea of the song, the topic let's say, they we start creating the music and lyrics we feel matches the theme or song title.
Have you done any covers live? We haven't, we dont really like playing  cover songs, we are looking to promote our own music only.

What language do you sing in? English

What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? We've played in a lot of different kind of gigs, from gigs with just a few attendants, but as well we've played in very big gigs with hundreds people in the public.

What ages are most of your concert attendants? From teenagers to adult people, but we could say the most common range is 20-40 years old

Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We always vary, as we have lots of material to play, so we always try to keep the show dynamic , as well always compose new songs every now and then.

Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We are gonna be performing for our latest album debut before the end of this year, we have been working on the production of our new album called  "Eye Commander" , and we are planning to organize a concert to promote it.

When did you start to sell merchandise, and what do you have for sale? We started to sell merchandise in jan 2013 when we launched our first EP Album, we have our EP "Deathstalker", and heavy chains T-shirts

Where can people buy your merchandise? You can buy our songs from our bandcamp page and as well from Itunes, if you want our physical disc or heavy chains T-shirts you can contact us via our FB page

What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records nowadays? We are not really against it, we like the idea of people downloading our music, sharing it, of course we would prefer them to buy it from us, to support newer bands like ours to rise, but still, we dont really care if you dont pay for the music, if you enjoy it, that's what really matters to us.

Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? We are mainly inspired by old school bands such as Iced Earth, Overkill, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, not that we dont like newer bands or arent influenced by them, but we really look forward that old school sound to be the one that represents our band.

What have been your biggest obstacles? the lack of support to newer metal bands, and lack of opportunities to promote our music beyond our borders, but well, all we can do is hope for the best and give our 100%, do what we love.

Do you have any new material? We just finished recording our new album "Eye Commander", we will be launching this new album on the next few months.

FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/heavychainscr?fref=ts

Bandcamp: https://heavychainscr.bandcamp.com/

How can people reach you? They can contact us directly to our FB page via message, we always check it.

What are your plans for the future? We are in the process of negotiation with a producer, and hopefully if we close the deal we will start the production of a new album, we have lots of material to record, we also hope to have more and bigger gigs, we want to get our music out there, reach more people, we have a lot more to give.
