interview with Roman Ring

Have any of you played in other bands? Yes.  Danny and Franco used to be in a band called Erjony.  Danny currently still sings for another band called Through the Eyes of the Dead.  Nate used to be in two other bands called The Infected and Jar’d Loose.  Bill used to play for a band called Capsized in Sinking. And Jaon currently plays for his other band Warforged
What are your names? / Who plays what?
Danny – Vocals
Nate- Guitar
Bill – Guitar
Jason – Drums
Franco – Bass
Where are you from? Chicago, IL
What's your style of genre? We just stick to calling it tech metal
What inspires you? Good music, snacks, Michael Jordan
How often and where do you rehearse? We rehearse two times a week at a place called the “Music Garage”
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Bill and Franco are both into woodworking.  Danny plays basketball.  Jason eats snacks.  And Nate drinks beer everyday.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? A booking agency would definitely be sweet.  At this stage in our “career” having one isn’t necessary.  However, if we were lucky to get signed, a booking agent would absolutely be a must.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? We aren’t currently shopping for a label per se, but our endgame is most certainly to sign an ideal record deal.
What made you decide to make this kind of music? I honestly think it’s because we’re all retarded
What are your songs about? Mostly sci-fi topics like time travel or what the human race will be like 50 years from now.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? The entire band works together when composing new music.  Danny writes the lyrics.
Do you compose in a certain environment? Our practice space is usually quiet and free of distractions.  That’s the kind of environment you definitely need when you’re trying to concentrate and conceive ideas.
What language do you sing in? English, but I’ve been pushing hard for Spanish
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs?
Least – About 8 people
Most – About 450
What ages are most of your concert attendants? On average I’d say we mostly play to adults between the ages of 22-30 (which sucks) We’re really trying to target that teenage audience since they’ve yet to realize the world is a horrible place to live.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? We definitely mix up our set list from show to show
Do you have a regular place you play live often? Lately we’ve been playing Reggie’s a lot.  Before that it was Cobra Lounge.
What was your latest gig? We played with a fellow local band called Kataplexy and an Australian brutal death metal band called Disentomb at Reggie’s.
Where can people buy your merchandise? At shows!
What do you think about people downloading music instead of buying records now a days? I really only consider that route cheap if you’re also not supporting that band by attending one of their shows or buying some merch from them.  Contribute something in one way or the other, otherwise you’re kind of a douche.
Is it easier to find inspiration from older bands, or bands that are more active today? It really depends more on how good the music is.  Play me some “Clients” by The Red Chord and I’m immediately reminded how much that band inspired me 10 years ago.  However, there are some recent acts that are really pushing the boundaries of extreme metal that immediately inspire me to try and do the same.
What have been your biggest obstacles? Assholes
What advice would you give other bands or artists? Stay true to your music.  Always strive for ingenuity.  Have a humble attitude, always.
How do you get psyched for a gig? Me and Nate have our recipe down – Drink a lot of alcohol before the set. The other guys have their mantra’s or whatever
Do you have any new material? Yes! We’re currently working on a new EP. So far four new songs are complete and we’re currently finishing up a fifth.
