interview with Craven

What´s the name of your band? Craven

How was the band formed? Some of the founding members and other dudes started playing just for fun in highschool, then it got a lot more serious when followers started to show up

Can you tell about your band? Just straight up metal with some groove and death elements

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We're a Mexican band, and we come from the state of Veracruz, all of us except for our singer come from the city of Xalapa, our singer was born in Córdoba. The line up goes like this: Alan - Guitar, Ricardo - Guitar, Irving - Bass, Yanus - Drums and Alfonso - Vocals

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? I'm not a founding member, but I know that when the band started the only ambition was to make some good music and hang around, just enjoying it.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? Not really, we've got a lot of different influences, so just check us out!

Where was your first gig? With this band it was in a shitty place with other local bands, no big deal actually

Where was the latest gig? In the city of Toluca, great audience there!

Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? We're all involved in writing the music, but drummer Yanus comes up with tons of ideas, he also plays piano, and we all work arranging the songs he sends to us, but Irving and I (Alan), also come up with a bunch of song ideas, as for the lyrics, Alfonso works on most of them.

Who has the best since of humor in the band? We're all king of in the same mood humor wise, that's our secret to tolerate each other hahaha

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? I'd say that the only bad thing is that some of us live in a different city than the others, so it's kind of complicated, but we make it work. The good thing is that we all fucking love making music together and play it together, hanging around and everything else involved with the band

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? It just comes up naturally, the songs are about hate, greed, misanthropy, old mexican tales and stories, humanity and life itself

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We only play our own material

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? We have an old EP from 2006 called "Rezos" which we're almost done rerecording and it's soon to be released with new and way better production, also a 3 song demo called "El Velo de las Mentiras" and one full length LP called "Juicio a la Conciencia"

Do you have any clips on YouTube? Yes, check out our youtube channel www.youtube.com/cravenxmx

How old are you?/What got you started in music? 25 years old and I started just by listening stuff on TV and liking the rock and metal sound

At what age did you start playing? I started playing guitar when I was 15 years old

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? With my first band I  was 16 years old, and with Craven I was 18

What year was the band started? The band started back in 2003

Best/worst gig you've played? Best opening up for Cannibal Corpse, worst maybe some local gig that was really shitty, our drummer did't made it so we used drum tracks and is was as awful as it gets

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? We're booking some shows in the NY area in USA so hit us up for some shows, also some places in the center part of Mexico

Where have you played from then till now? A lot of places from north to south of Mexico

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? Probably Meshuggah, amazing!

Is it always the same songs live? No, we have enough songs to play for over an hour and a half, but we keep most of our set lists for around 45 to 55 minutes

What has been the best/most promising gig so far? Opening up for Cannibal Corpse, also opening up for Septicflesh and Fleshgod Apocalypse

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? A few of them

How big crowds do you usually play for? Maybe 20-100 people on locals bars and small stages

What are the plans for the rest of the year? Finish rerecording and release the Rezos album, USA tour and start recording our next album

How do you get psyched up for a gig? Maybe a beer or two, warm up and... That's it!

What are your goals with your music? To get to as many people as possible, and for it to be sustainable

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? Both work just fine

What are your sources of inspiration? Music, life experiences and movies

What's the first step when making a new song? Get your ass down and start writing!

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? It's not bad for promotiong, but buying albums is just something else you know, specially the physical copy, to hold it on your hands and look at the artwork, it's just something awesome!

What would be your dreams for the band? To tour for years!

What do you hold most dear? My friends and family (guitars and amps are family)

Have you been part of any other projects? Sure a few other bands here and there

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? I do some music recording, editing, mixing and mastering, also some other audio stuff, not just music, hit me up for some work.

How important are your fans? Really important, music is kind of pointless if you don't share it with other people, and those who like it are just kind of special to you, our fans are awesome!

How often do you rehearse? 2 or 3 times a week

Where do you rehearse? At home

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Just 2? I like them all man!

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? We're not trying to make a living out of it, just to keep it going and to sustain itself, we love our music so we'll keep it alive as long as possible

Do you have any webpages? Sure www.craven.mx and www.facebook.com/cravenmexico

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? Learn to hear yourself live and try not to suck, polish your sound and don't settle for a shitty guitar, or bass tone, don't settle for a shitty snare sound, always try to go for more and improve your sound as a band!

Describe your show, visually and musically: Great live band, good tones and madness!

How do you view the musicindurty of today? Isnot that bad, there a lots of options for people to find out about your music, they're just waiting there for you to use it

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Money

What is best/worst with playing the clubs?

Best: interaction with the audience.

Worst: not enough space to jump around onstage.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence: Massive

What is your favorite crappy instrument? If it sounds good and I love it, then is nit crappy, so I believe I have no crappyinstruments

Whats your Pre-show ritual? Not really

Do you have anything to add? Thanks for the interview man, you have a ton of questions to make hahahaha cheers from Mexico, and I would also like to add that there are some songs free for everyone to download at our facebook page, so get to them!
