interview with JFKFC

What´s the name of your band? JFKFC which stands for John F. Kennedy’s Fried Chicken.

How was the band formed? First we were regular folk, then became old school punk and finally settled on Folk Punk. We’re not poseurs, we just couldn’t decide what was the most fun to play.

Can you tell about your band? We are three kids playing angry acoustic music letting everyone know that they are loved.

Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We are all from Tri Cities, WA which is three cities in the Southeast of the state. Matt plays guitar and sings, Mike plays washboard along with whatever else no one wants to play and sings, and Devon plays ukulele, harmonica and sings.

What was the ambitions of the band when you started? To sing as many songs as possible to as many people as possible.

Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? We are angry, loud kids who play acoustic instruments and sing songs about self-loathing and Russia.

Where was your first gig? We played at an event in the park called Caterwaul which was a protest against the newly established sound ordinance.

Where was the latest gig? At this neat little pizza joint called The Lunchbox where they have local and touring bands play.

Who writes your songs?/ who writes the music who writes lyrics? It is mainly split between Mike and Devon who both write their own music and lyrics.

Who has the best since of humor in the band? We are all pretty much the same, we feed off of each other’s lack of wit and make shitty puns.

What's good/bad with the band?/What genre do you feel you are? We are all pretty close friends which is a good thing and we all like to have fun. We feed off each other pretty well and know where the other people are going. Something that’s bad is when we mess up and point it out to whoever is there listening. We fit mostly into the Folk Punk genre.

Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? We picked to play Folk Punk because we heard an amazing from La Grande, Oregon called The Dirtface Daredevils who opened our eyes to the genre. Anything from gender identity, snails, Russia, girls, burning down buildings, not wanting to go to work.

Do you write your own material or mainly covers? Right now its pretty much all original but we started with a lot of covers.

Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? Right now we have two splits one with a band called The Comrades and another with a person called Porch cat. We also have a collection of very old songs and covers that we did about two years ago.

Do you have any clips on YouTube? We have two videos. One is our very first show and the other is us doing a cover of Anarchy Burger by The Vandals.

How old are you?/What got you started in music? Matt and Mike are both 20 and twins, Devon is 19. We all started playing guitar because we all love music.

At what age did you start playing? Matt and Mike started playing guitar when they were 13 and Devon started when he was 9.

How old were you guys when you first stood on stage? Matt and Mike were 13 when they played at school talent shows and Devon didn’t play a show until JFKFC started. Our first show as JFKFC was  in October 2012.

What yeas was the band started? We started in 2012.

Best/worst gig you've played? It’s a tie with our best show between the time we played with The Dirtface Daredevils and the time we played with Old Man Markley. Our worst shows had to be our second and third ones where we tried to switch off electric and acoustic.

What places will you be playing in in the imidate future? We will be back at The Lunchbox on October 23rd. After that we aren’t sure what’s coming up.

Where have you played from then till now? All our most recent shows have been at The Lunchbox.

Witch band is the best you´ve seen? Us three and a two others saw Andrew Jackson Jihad in Seattle.

Is it always the same songs live? We try to have new songs every couple of shows. At our last show we tried out two new songs we hadn’t played before.

What has been the best/most promising gig so far? The biggest show we have played is when Old Man Markley played here.

Have you had any bigger tours from start to now? We have not gone on tour yet.

What are the plans for the rest of the year? Record a full length, go on a tour by next summer and write some more songs.

Where do you usually play? We usually play The Lunchbox in Richland, WA and Rays Golden Lion which is a bar venue.

How do you get psyched up for a gig? We eat pizza and listen gangsta’ rap.

What are your goals with your music? To show people a good time and how its good to be alive. To show people they’re loved no matter how it feels.

When did you decide to go all in for the music? When we decided we didn’t want to work office jobs for the rest of our lives.

Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? We listen to a lot of the newer bands for inspiration but we all have a wide variety of music we listen to.

What are your sources of inspiration? Musically its anything we’ve listened to. We combine anything we like into what we want to play. Lyrically it comes from personal experience and what we believe.

What's the first step when making a new song? Find something to write about.

How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? Get music anyway you can. We would rather have people listen to it than make money. If you don’t have cash than we will give you a tape or cd for free.

What would be your dreams for the band? To never work another day and get signed to Plan-It-X records.

Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? We listen to music. Anything that’s good. We have no real precise genre we go to. Anything from Johnny Cash to Wu Tang Clan to Charles Bronson to Andrew Jackson Jihad.

What do you hold most dear? Friendship and pizza.

What would be your greatest fears for the future? Working for the rest of our lives.

When you are on stage, what do you fear most then? When we play we kind of tune everything out. There’s really nothing we worry about except the occasional mess up.

What songs and what years were they released? We started writing songs in the summer of 2012.

Have you been part of any other projects? Matt and Mike are in a hardcore punk band called the Jerks. Devon hasn’t been in any other bands.

Have you been in any other bands? Matt and Mike are in a hardcore punk band called the Jerks. Devon hasn’t been in any other bands.

What do you work with outside of the band and the music? Mike is a fry cook, Matt works at a hardware store and Devon works with produce.

How important are your fans? Our friends are extremely important to us. Without them we wouldn’t be playing music.

What's the funniest/most memorable thing a fan has done for you? Our friend Brandon listens to our most recent split we did for over three and a half months straight.

How often do you rehearse? Few and far between but we remember our songs.

Where do you rehearse? Matt and Mikes parent’s basement is our go to spot.

Name 2 of your own songs you like at the moment? Right now we like playing Ones Own Company and My Life Sucks.

What do you feel is the best live band you've seen? Andrew Jackson Jihad.

What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? The sheer joy of meeting new people and realizing at some point it changes from just you playing for yourself to playing for other people.

Do you have any webpages? We’ve got our Facebook  page and Bandcamp right now.

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there? You owe everything to anybody who has ever supported you. Without them you wouldn’t be doing what you love.

Describe your show, visually and musically Visually its nothing exciting. We just stand there and start playing. Musically we are loud and fast.

How do you view the musicindurty of today? Mainstream at least is in the toilet. Dishonesty executives and royalty checks for pennies. But there are some good underground record companies still doing well.

What advice would you like to give other bands? Don’t stop playing just because you feel like it’s not going anywhere. Play for the fun of it and for anyone who loves your music.

What are the biggest obstacles for a band? Getting started.

What is best/worst with playing the clubs? A lot of the venues now are getting closer and closer to not being all ages. We have made ourselves a rule of never playing a 21 and up show.

Tell us about upcomming gigs and why we should be at them? In a couple weeks we are playing with a guy named Saint Chris who is amazing. You should come see him play his guitar with his stomp box.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence Loud and fast with no electricity.

What is your favorite crappy instrument? The Kazoo.

What was one of the most quarrelsome times for you in the band? Probably a few days before our first show, trying to find music to play and time to practice.

Whats your Pre-show ritual? Listening to gangsta’ rap and eating pizza. We like to check we have all our instruments and strings intact.

Do you have anything to add? Thank you for interviewing us. You can find our most recent split we did with Porch Cat at http://jfkfcwa.bandcamp.com/album/porch-cat-jfkfc-split-e-p
