interview with Truculency

What´s the name of your band? Truculency
How was the band formed? The band started at the start of 2008 when Joe and Steve were bored and decided to start a black metal band with both of us playing guitar.  We quickly figured out that Joe was a better drummer than guitarist and we were not very good a writing black metal music.  We decided we would be better off forming a death metal group, since Steve already had a few songs written in that style.
Can you tell about your band? We are a brutal technical death metal band from the Chicago, IL area.  We recorded a few songs in 2008 and put them up on Myspace.  Soon after that we got signed to Amputated Vein Records.  We released one CD on Amputated Vein Records called Eviscerate the Paraplegic in 2009.  We are currently mixing our next CD, which hopefully will get released sometime soon.  It will contain 9 new songs plus one rerecorded track from our first CD.
Where are all band members from?/Who does what in the band? We all live in or near Chicago, IL.  Shawn does vocals, Joe plays drums, and Steve plays guitar and bass.
What was the ambitions of the band when you started? Just to get together to play some music when we were bored and maybe do some recording to get some stuff released on the internet.
Could you explain your music to someone that haven't heard you? We play brutal death metal with some technical stuff thrown in and riffs that are always changing.
Where was your first gig? We do not play shows.  We only record.
Who writes your songs?/Who writes the music who writes lyrics? Steve writes the guitar and bass parts, Joe writes the drums, and Shawn writes the lyrics.
Who has the best since of humor in the band? Definitely Joe.
Why did you pick that particular style?/What are your songs about? We like to listen to bands like Gorgasm, Deeds of Flesh, Spawn of Possession, Origin, Disgorge, etc.  Our songs are about the typical gore stuff with some anti-religion thrown in.
Do you write your own material or mainly covers? We only write our own material.
Have you made any albums?/If yes what are they? We released one CD on Amputated Vein Records called Eviscerate the Paraplegic in 2009.
Do you have any clips on YouTube? We posted some videos of Joe recording drums for our first CD in 2008 and a video of a string quartet recording a piece that will be on our next CD.  Other than that there are a few songs posted by other people.
How old are you?/What got you started in music? We are all around 30 and started playing music to emulate all the bands we were listening to.
At what age did you start playing? Around 12.
What year was the band started? 2008
What are the plans for the rest of the year? Hopefully to finish mixing the new album and get it mastered and released in 2015.
What are your goals with your music? Just to write and record music that we enjoy listening to and getting it released so people around the world can enjoy it too.
When did you decide to go all in for the music? We have never gone all in for music.  We all have full time day jobs.  Music is just something we enjoy doing to pass the time.
Is it easier to get your inspiration from older bands or from bands more modern? We are inspired from both equally, from older bands like Death, Morbid Angel, and Suffocation to newer bands like Severed Savior, Obscura, and Origin.
What's the first step when making a new song? Songs start off with Steve being bored and playing guitar.  Riffs are not usually thought about.  They just start flowing the more you start playing.  If the riffs can be remembered they get written down and become a song.
How do you feel about the downloading of music instead of buying albums? Downloading music instead of buying albums is a slap in the face to any artist whose purpose is making music for profit.  But for us, who make music for fun, any way people listen to our music is fine.
What would be your dreams for the band? Just to continue to write and record music.
Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to? Mostly Death Metal, Black Metal, and Thrash.
Have you been in any other bands? Shawn plays guitar in Last False Hope and drums in Bound and Gagged.  He also played guitar and did vocals in Inhuman Gestation and Reprobation.  Joe plays guitar and does vocals in Lightning Thrash Attack.
What do you work with outside of the band and the music? Steve is a software engineer, Joe works in oil fields, and Shawn is a dog walker.
What would you do if there was no music? Sleep.
How important are your fans? We do everything for our fans.  We are not doing this for fame or money.  Our only goal is to spread our music to people around the world.
What do you feel is the best live band you've seen? Deeds of Flesh
What drives a band that isn't all that famous and renowned to try to make a living on their music and to keep playing? Probably boredom.  Without music all we would do is work and sleep all day.
