interview with Sinmate

Have any of you played in other bands? We all have our backgrounds in various bands but since the Sinmate was formed, this band has been everyone's priority.
What are your names? / Who plays what? / How old are you?
Jani Kaikkonen, vocals
Janne Ulmanen, guitar
Ville Moisanen, guitar
Markus Kumpulainen, bass
Teemu Roth, drums
Have you had other previous members? Aatu Kajanus played guitar until spring 2012.
Where are you from? Sinmate is based in small town called Iisalmi, Finland.
What year did the band form? It was 2007.
What's your style of genre? Sinmate plays somekind of thrash metal with a little nuances from death metal.
What inspires you? When speaking of lyrics it's human nature. The complexity of human mind is so incomprehensible that it is infinite source for lyrics. In music all the whole I guess creating something new is the driving force and of course playing live.
How often and where do you reherse? 1 - 2 times a week at our own training place. There's af course variation on the amount of rehearsing depending on forthcoming gigs etc.
How have you developed since you started with the music? Haha, all you can hear in our songs is the result of development since we have started with music. When speaking about the time since Sinmate was formed the most obvious things are improved technique of each member, better song-writing and the way we play together. These things form the Sinmate-sound.
Do you have other interests of work outside the band? Since Sinmate is still considered as a hobby for us, pretty serious one though, most of us are normally working.
Are you looking for a booking agency, and what are your thoughts around that? We've talked about it but at the moment we want to finish our new demo. Of course we would like to play more live and maybe the booking agency could be the next step.
Are you looking for a label, and what are your thoughts around that? Maybe we can't say we are looking for label, but of course we hope that some day someone finds us. It means that we are not ready to make music as it was business.
What made you decide to make this music? It wasn't actually a decision. First guys just started to play something that everyone new already and how we sound like now has been somekind of natural deformation.
What are your songs about? Mostly about misery, dying, mental problems and suicide. Specially suicide is fascinating thing and playing with the thought of ending your own life in various ways is just great.
Who does the composing and writes the lyrics? Janne and Ville are mostly responsible for the new riffs, Jani and sometimes Janne write lyrics. Arrangements we do together.
Do you start with the music or the lyrics? Always with the music.
Do you compose in a certain inviroment? Janne and Ville's homes are usually the places where the new riffs are born.
Have you done any covers live? In the beginning we had everytime few covers from bands like In Flames, Pantera, Sentenced, Megadeth.
What language do you sing in? In english.
What are the least and most people to attend one of your gigs? Don't know about the most but the last gig in Kuopio was definitely the gig where we had the smallest audience ever. It was less than 20 people.
Do you always play the same songs live, or do you vary? There are some songs that seem to have made their way to our setlist permanently but of there's variation when we take new songs on the list and drop some old stuff off.
Do you have a regular place you play live often? No.
What was your first gig like? We played at local youth center. Actually that's pretty much all I remember of it. I guess we all were nervous before the gig.
What was your latest gig? Last one was couple of weeks ago when we played at Henry's Pub, Kuopio, Finland.
Have you had to cancel a gig? Never.
Where have you played live this year? Kajaani, Iisalmi and Kuopio.
Where do you plan to gig the comming year? We shall see.
Do you have any role models or idols? The bands that have influenced our music. Pantera, Slayer, Sentenced, In Flames and so on. Too many to mention all. Role model or idol sounds a bit too strong expression today but those might be the reason why we do music now.
What have been your biggest obstacles? 2012 when Aatu left Sinmate. It took several months to get over it. Luckily Janne found Ville and we were able to move on with the new guitarist.
What advice would you give other bands or artists? I think we are not in a position where we could give any advice to others. And if we were, we wouldn't anyway ;)
How do you get psyched for a gig? Few good training sessions, building up the stage and maybe few beers with bandmates. It just simple as that.
Do you have any new material? The last release and actually our first official release is from last Christmas. It was full-lenght album titled "Carnival for Mankind". New 3-song demo is making it's way out later this fall.

How can people reach you? Facebook seems to be the most natural way nowadays.
What are your plans for the future? Demo first and then more gigs. And more new songs and more gigs and so on.
