interview with Scatterbrain

What is a newly released album about? We haven't released an album since Mundus Intellectualus/ We put out 3 albums - Here Comes Trouble - Scamboogery and Mundus Intellectualus.

Have you released any album or singles before? Besides the 3 albums we released, I think, 3 singles (Don't Call Me Dude, Down with the Ship, Sonata #3) and a live CD that was recorded in Texas and released as a double CD with the first album in Australia.

What's your earlier singles and albums? Here Comes Trouble was released in 1990 along with the singles Don't Call Me Dude and Down with the Ship.

What is your records about? Our records were about humor as well as some serious topics like Goodbye Freedom, Hello Mom. We were very tongue in cheek but were musically sophisticated. Even if you didn't like the band most people could appreciate the playing.

Do you play always the same songs life or they vary? We would change the set around but you never knew what we would do live. I don't think we knew either. Depended on the crowd or what happened earlier that day or even how much we drank during the show.

What are the common songs you play live? We would mix the songs from each album as the tours went on. When we only had the first album out we would play almost the whole thing besides some covers and other craziness we would throw in.

Where are you playing this year? We have not played a show since 2007. I put together our first reunion show since breaking up in 1994. We also reunited Ludichrist and made it a double bill. It was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work to get 2 bands worth of songs down for a show. We would come out and do a whole Ludichrist show then go change and come back in 30 minutes to do Scatterbrain.

How often do you play guitar? Since I own a music store I pick up a guitar or bass everyday but not to actually play. I wish I could have more time to do so.

How often do you play drums? Mike still plays when he is not busy with his business. The rest of us pick it up but don't play out often because of our businesses and families.

What's the era's most popular song? Don't Call Me Dude was the biggest one. Down with the Ship was the next one.

How did you get startde with music? I always loved music and was always a big fan. It wasn't until I was around 16 that I actually picked up a bass. I started playing in a band when the bass player didn't show up for rehearsal and just kept going from there.
Did you make music already as kids? We were all playing with local bands from our teens. There was a big cover band scene where you could go out and play local bars for 3 hours playing Cream, Allman Bros. Beatles, Led Zeppelin...
How have you developed sins you started making music? By playing with different people over the years and doing different music your musical ability changes. I played blues, rock, fusion, jazz, R&B, hardcore... By playing these styles and learning how to adapt your playing you always grow as a musician.
Do youhave any other hobbies or occupations outside of the band and music? Like I said earlier, I own music stores that sell guitars as well as band and orchestra instruments, We also repair, rent and teach lessons. Tommy is a high school english teacher, Mike has his own company involving golf, Paul has auto body repair shops and Glen has a graphic art business.
What internet pages do you have? We only have Facebook pages for the band
Why do you make music? Because we love music. There was nothing better than after recording a song to go on stage and play it for a crowd. I miss getting up there. I  do get to play onstage a few times a year. I will actually be playing in June with some people. The last show I did I was lucky enough to play wit Carmine Appice, Randy Jackson from Zebra, John Gatto from the Good Rats and Mark Wood the electric violinist.
What in life influences you? Wow, tough question. Musically, we all had many different influences. Of course when we were growing up there was bands like Frank Zappa, Led Zep, Allmand Bros... Everyone in the band were into so many different styles of music. As we got older we our tastes changed. There was jazz fusion that was a big influence on myself and Paul. Then there was the hardcore scene that Tommy and Glen were in with Ludichrist. I think all of this shapes your ability as a musician. That's in answer to your question if it was about music. If you are talking about life in general then I would think our children, wives, girlfriends, friends... have a big influence on what we do.
What clothe style do you have on stage? Back then we were all over the place! We wore crazy colored shorts and shirts. Glen would wear pig tails. We would come out in different outfits throughout the show. Tommy would come out dressed as a chicken and then it would just go from there. We were know to wear ladies dresses, nun costumes, pajamas as well as squirting breasts and rubber dicks!!
Why that style? Why not! We did what ever we felt like doing. We didn't plan most of it out it just kind of happened. We were clowns playing real music and we had a great time doing it.
What style is your music? We were called crossover, funk rock but the best description was from an interviewer who said we sounded like a cross between Frank Zappa and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As soon as you did anything that had a funk bass  and drum groove you were compare to RHCP. But I think that would be close to accurate if you had to describe the band to someone who never heard of us before.
Why that style? That's what came out of us as we were writing. We just came off of the last Ludichrist tour of the US. I had joined the band in 1987 for the Powertrip Europe tour and Mike came into the band about a year or so later. At that point there were 2 new members and Paul had just been in Ludichrist for the Powertrip album. With all the changes of people and the different styles of playing and influences, musically we just progressed and transformed into Scatterbrain.
Do you have any new material on the way? I would like to release some stuff we recorded that never made it to the records but we will see if that ever happens.
How can someone getin contact with you? Facebook would be the band page so that would be best.
Do you have anything to add? It's great and humbling to see that people still care about our music. It was a great time in music and we were around for all the changes that happened during those years. I am hoping to still get the band together to do some show or festivals. Keep your fingers crossed!
